1. I'd have a word at the mairie, so they can take action. I would have done so at the first instance.

Wandering dogs (whether they belong to someone or not) are the maire's responsibility.

If the dog(s) attack poultry, they can attack a young child or a pet.

Also, the dog has damaged someone's property (chickens), so the owner of the chicken can -should- go to the gendarmerie and make a formal complaint.

  2.
Clair will offer a homegrown radish to the first person who works out why each name is on the list and two radishes to anyone who can offer some new ones!
No radishes today, but I'll offer one courgette (small) and 345 lbs of haricots verts... [:P]

Hint: read the names as a French person would... [;-)]

  3. Jay,

Like other posters here, I've been happy with the service received from Lidl when I have had cause to contact their consumer service which handles all their consumers' queries.

I suggest you try again, keeping calm and collected - as much as possible [:)] - and explain that you are surprised to have to pay as the item is still under guarantee.

If the need arises, quote Art. 1641 of the French Consumers Code. If the question of cost is brought up again, you should quote Art. L. 211-11 of the same code.

Keep  a copy of all your communication, whether by phone or email.

From experience, I would suggest you arm yourself with patience, as Lidl can take 4-6 weeks before they reply to an email!

Let us know how you get on, please   [:)]

Edited to add: your contract is with Lild, not the battery supplier. Get Lidl to deal with the cost issue.

  4. Hello L.t.d,

I've done a quick search for this drug and it's on the "exceptional" list in France, presumably because of its cost. It's also on the "restricted" list, which means it has to be prescribed by a hospital in the first instance.

This means it's unlikely to be prescribed without a lot  - and this means a lot - of medical hoops being cleared first.

The current cost for a pack of two 0.8 ml syringes is 943,74 €, of which 65% (613.431 €) would be refunded by the French health service.

If it were ever prescribed, you would have to fund the 35% balance (330.309 €) either yourself or via a mutuelle.

  5.
...I have never seen French house with more than one or two books...
Chancer, you're not visiting the right French houses!

you should have come around some 40+ years ago, when I was a child living in a HLM...

Our bookshelves were were propped up with dictionaries and encyclopaedia. We often played a game where someone would read a random word definition in the dictionary for the others to guess the word...

I learnt a long time ago to only lend that which I don't mind losing... [;-)]

  6. A while back, there was a lengthy discussion on the forum about the French government's decision to legislate against online book retailers offering a (legal) 5% discount on books together with free P&P.

The practice of combining both reductions together was seen as unfair competition because high street (brick and mortar) book shops seem to be unable to match the overall price offered online.

I don't want to reignite the bonfire, so this is just a heads-up to advise that the law is official as of 9th July 2014.

  7. EDF are meant to do at least 1 actual meter reading (as opposed to estimates) per year.

They do 2 readings a year from my meters.

The date of the next visit is shown on the front of my bill, underneath the amount payable.

You should be able to tell from the invoice if the relevé (reading) is from a meter reading or from  an estimate, or you should ask them to clarify.

I wouldn't give EDF access to the bank account, at least until this is cleared up.

  8.
... did you know that the password you gave me is a sub-dialect of Albanian, related to Turkish and it describes a lady with a large posterior, this being a compliment as such things were much prized, apparently.
Describes me to a T!

    An old pic... [;-)]

  9. Crickey, you are trouble!!

I've just reset your password, so you will not be able to log in with your current password if you get locked out again...

Please check your emails ASAP, Petal!

  10.
Woolybana here: been locked out of the forum and she with talons of steel is letting me squat her ipad until a solution can be found to get back on either the ipad or the PC.

Thus far I have tried old passwords, new passwords, old identities, cookie clearing, swearing, chucking rabid Scotsmen round the room and supplication. NOTHING works.

Any ideas please. No wonder we lose members!
WoolyB,

I've sent you an email... Please check :)

  11. Regarding the Neufbox (or whichever box you're using), the best decision we ever made was to buy a spare box a few years ago.

It has allowed us to carry on surfing when the box we rent from SFR goes on the blink, and it also allows us to determine immediately if the fault is with the line or with the box.

Looking at the list I keep of the passwords I have to enter into all our internet-connected devices when we get a replacement box, I can see that we've had 6 replacement boxes since 2011, one killed by lightning, one recently killed as a result of the flickering/power cut, some lasting only a couple of months before becoming unreliable and one being unusable from the moment it was plugged in.

Every time it happens, all I do is swap the faulty box with my spare one and if the spare one works, I call SFR for a replacement. This usually takes up to a week to arrive, sometimes longer if there's a bank holiday or a weekend, but at least with the spare box, we still have an internet connection and a landline until  the rented box arrives.

  12. One of the units has 8 sockets (TV + Humax + Vu+ + DVD + soundbar + wireless headphones + TNT + Roku NowTV and ethernet cable) and the other is smaller and enough to protect the Neufbox + printer + phone, but as I posted earlier, the purchase itself has been enough of a deterrent and I haven't been in a position to check how they actually work (and I hope I don't have to find out too soon!)

The surge protectors we were using before are now used for the laptops and iPads/mobile phones when they're on charge... just in case... [;-)]

  13. The weather in our area has been quite bad over the last few weeks, with thunderstorms, hailstones and particularly high winds, which inevitably bring power cuts in their wake.

I had the candles and torches out 3 times last week alone, once over a 10-hour stretch (candle-lit dinner!), only to see a 2-hour repeat the following day...[:@]

The TV/sat boxes/DVD player/other devices are all plugged into a surge protector, as is the Neufbox, and we didn't suffer any loss but Mr Clair was worried about his latest gadget (and missing the Giro) and the damage the repeated stuttering/flickering, which usually precede the actual power cut, could cause.

So we have invested in 2 UPS units, delivered very quickly (thank you Amazon!) at a cost of 150€ and, I kid you not, this has been a superb deterrent!

There hasn't been a single power cut since we installed them, and the sun has been shining for that last 3 days! [;-)]

Highly recommended (if slightly expensive!) [:P]

PS: I'm so happy I had my Kindle and iPad fully charged and I was able to read quietly during the power cut! It's slightly disturbing to realise how much I rely on my internet connection... [blink]
