  1. Hi Sweets, thanks for your prompt reply. It is now starting to make some sense (clear as in milk rather than mud maybe!!). The annuity seems to be split at 50%, so 50% taxed and 50% used in the social charges calculation. (OH took his annuity at 55). If I knew what the tax percentages were I could probably work out how much of a tax refund we are getting, but I think my head is beginning to hurt now!! I think it seems very strange to take money from you one year and then give it back to you the next, but there we go that's France for you....

    Thanks again
  2. It's Social charges time again and for another year I am completly confused.

OH 67 yrs and has had E121 (S1) since we arrived in 2007 on which I am a dependant. I have now hit the magic 60 so can probably ask for an E121 in my own right (even though the UK government will not let me have my state pension till I reach the ripe old age of 62yrs 6 mths! but that's another story that I am sure you all know about...)

When I check the social charges bill, I see we pay social charges @ 13.5% on the interest we get on UK savings accounts (Box 2TS on blue form). We also pay social charges @13.5% on half of OH's annuity pension (Box 1BW on blue form).

    Questions:

    1) should we be paying social charges on half of an annuity pension? Other pensions not included.

    2) should we be paying social charges on savings as we are not a drain on the health service because of the E121 (the UK pays the bill does it not?)

Then to cap all that we then get some sort of refund off set against "next years Impot bill". That I cannot fathom as it does not seem to be a percentage of anything. Anyone know what this may be please.

I have puzzled over this bill for the last 5 years and I am no further advanced. I would really appreciate some insight into this. The biggest bug bear is that lots of aquaintences say "Oh you should not pay Social charges, we don't!!!!!" Grrrrrr.....

    Thanks
  3. My mother has a yorkie and has cooked chicken for her every day since she was about 4 months old..

She turns her nose up at everything else !! She tried once for 2 days to get her to eat "doggie food", but she flatly refused and would probably have starved if we hadn't got the roast chicken in the oven again. Oh the other thing she is partial to - strawberries !!!
  4. We were visiting London a couple of weeks ago and took a walk down the Mall to Buck House. When we got there we were interviewed by German TV about "the rumours that Charles and Camilla were separating ". What did we think about this and did we think he should ever be king !!
  5. I clean mine with good old Cilllit Bang and dry off with a microfibre cloth or soft cotton teatowel... Then if I see any water type marks I follow through with that bathroom calcaire cleaning liquid stuff and a soft dry cloth (but I think these water marks appear cos I am in a very high calcaire water area here in 24). Shines every time !!! Talking Cillit bang - try spraying onto your copper - leave a few seconds and wash off with hot water - not a bit of elbow grease needed..
  6. I could not debate the pros and cons of Greece coming out of the Euro as I don't know enough about the consequences either way, but I have not long returned from 2 weeks in Crete and was quite shocked to find it was "hard cash" only, no cards accepted. I got all kinds of excuses - from "Sorry the machine is broken" to "Well it's this crisis you know" ..... The only conclusion I can come to is that the Greek people are lining their own pockets with cash (whilst also charging us 23% Vat!!) and paying no taxes, so the only money the government gets is from the EU, cos they sure as hell aren't collecting any from the shops, restaurants, supermarkets etc... After 30 odd years of holidaying all over Greece, I have just made my last visit!!! Oh and petrol was a few cents shy of 2 euro a litre, which also had to be paid for in cash.
  7. I went to Perigueux CPAM with a short version birth certificate. This was not accepted, I had to apply for the full one. I also agree with most replies, I think it is best to go in person, they are really helpful when they see a face !!
  8. Don't understand all this "jack jargon +++". All I do know is we bought a set of 3 Phillips phones in Tesco (less than half the price they are here) and 3 small adaptors (50p each in tesco also), brought them back here and plugged them in no problems - they work fine. Oh the only other thing is the phone socket adaptor (I had one of these that disconnected from the old french phone, the wire unplugs from the socket bit and the English one plugs in here) Not a very good technical description, but I know it works ......
  9. I fell over this yesterday when trying to purchase a new book for my Kindle. I gave my residence as a UK address as described above, but I also have 1-click set up and I had to ensure that my bank account address or "virtual" delivery address (can't remember which) was also pointing to a UK address. On the manageyourkindle page I just went through each section and checked everything was pointing towards the UK..... Then downloaded my books - Also agree with most on this thread - I love my Kindle x
