  1. Hi Sunday Driver and anyone else with a wealth of experience on this subject.

I have read the FAQ on importing and reregistering a car from UK. All looks okay, but a couple of questions?

    1) Do I need to have owned the car for a minimum period of time before I can import and reregister?

    2) Reading this thread I now assume that there is a different set of rules for a campervan - if Yes can you expand on this?

To give you a clue of where I am coming from. I am resident in France. I have seen a campervan in Germany I am interested in bringing here. I have also seen one in the UK (LHD). Both are late models 2007-2008. How do I go about bringing one of them here. I have spoken to my insurance broker about this and all they said was "Yes of course you can, I can give you a cover note for 1 month to give you time to reregister, but we will only cover driving in France!!"

    Is there any import duty?

    Cheers

  2. Thanks Clair. I have tried the on-line route, but I don't seem to have a Teledeclarant number (I have read somewhere else on the forum on how to get the little e thingies on my UK keyboard, but I can't remember what it was..... Too many candles on the cake [:D] ) I think maybe this number is not available until I am computerised into the system if you know what I mean (after the 1st year). Oh Dear this post is going down hill fast. I think I need a lie down and I will patiently await the post lady. Just knowing it's not lost somewhere and I have to start chasing the darn thing, makes me feel better.... Thanks again
  3. I have been awaiting our Social Charges Bill this last week, but as yet I have not received anything. (Clair's helpful notice gives dates of when these dreaded bills should arrive..).

Are they late? Is mine lost in the post? Do I not owe anything?? (I wish [Www] )

Clair - I know you say you can check on-line, but can I do this, as this is my 1st year in the French system?

If I can check on-line can you please give me a link as a starting point Please [:D]

  4. We have lived here 3 years and in this last 6 months we have been haranged by our UK banks for the same kind of info. Better still, after you have sent it to them they send you another letter saying the same thing all over again. You then think, maybe they did not receive all my certified paperwork (that takes ages to organise!!), so you end up phoning them, hanging about in a queue for ages, and then told, Oh just ignore the 2nd letter Mrs .... we have your details. We have 3 different uk accounts between us ans this has happened on ALL of them, so it was not just one incompentent organisation. No wonder they are all going bust - the duplication of correspondence and information is unbelievable [:@][8-)]

I do feel that though banks do give some travel protection as an inducement to taking out certain accounts/cards, how comprehensive this protection is remains uncertain to me.

I just feel I need to respond to this statement. At no time was this used as an inducement to taking CA as a bank. I did not even know we would be covered medically until I asked if they did travel insurance, at which stage the told me I was already covered. Maybe I walk round with rose tinted specs on, but I don't think that French Banks are the like the Sharks we are used to in the UK [:)]

  6. Don't know whether Australia and USA are treated the same way, but when we went on holiday last year to USA, we were told were were covered medically by our Credit Agricole-CB card, because we had paid for the flights using this card. I would be interested if anyone knew different as we are thinking of going back soon... Sorry - I am not trying to pinch this thread, but I think I was told by Credit Agricole we were covered world wide medically with the CB card, so surely Down Under would also come under this banner
  7. Hi Aly - I'm near Brantome in dept 24 Dordogne. Last week Dordogneshire took a bit of a bashing on here - everyone seems to think that every other house is owned by a Brit !! But honest it's not there is the odd Paddy here too [:D] and even some French folks [:-))]. Joking aside I love it here. Took early retirement in 2000 and returned to the old country (Ballycastle) After 5 years could not put up with the rain any longer so we upped sticks and came to France. Great move all round. Hope you are happy here too and I am sure your daughters snake is lovely but..... [blink]

    Best Regards

  8. I have two antique Howard armchairs that need to be re-upholstered. Has anyone got any recommendations on where I can get this done in the Perigueux or Nontron Areas. I need to have them done in the old-fashioned way i.e springs, padding etc…

If you cannot post names because of forum rules an email would be very much appreciated.

    Regards - Nell

  9. St Patrick may have rid all snakes from Ireland, but believe me he did not do the same in France. You don't need to buy one - there are more than enough of the horrible critters crawling through the undergrowth hereabouts [+o(][6][+o(]

Regards from another lass from N. Ireland

  10. I did OH books and VAT for twenty odd years until 2000 when he retired (early !) About the only thing I can remember being vat free was books and stamps.

just did a google search and came up with this http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/DG_4015895?cids=Google_PPC&cre=Money

    Hope it helps....

I agree with RH - a good accountant is worthwhile. I did the books/Vat but he verified my figures and filled out the tax returns

  11. I have been reading these threads about shopping costs with some interest. If I am totally honest I don't really worry too much about weekly shopping costs. I am more than happy to live here, not have to go to work every day and have time to cook from scratch and not use any pre-packed rubbish and E numbers. I don't buy any minced type meat - i have a small electric mincer/sausage maker and have great fun buying pork/beef/lamb/chicken when it is on special offer and making my own mince and my own sausage. The only exception to this is the odd Toulouse sausage bought from my local butcher as they are scrummy.... I find that if you make your own, you know what is in there and it works out much cheaper. I know lots of people make their owm bread and grow their own veg, but I don't think this saves much as bread is a very reasonable price and veg - You get a glut and then have to think of what to do with it to keep you going for a few months. To me meat in the freezer is the basis of all meals and the most costly part.

But after all that - the main reason I am posting a reply to this thread. = ValB if you can admit to bringing back cases of Farrows Marrofat peas and boxes of dried mushies - so can I.  I now know who to contact if I start to run short before my next UK supermarket run [:D]   I will have a go at basic veg on my plate but the OH !!! Unless it is green out of a tin or soaked and boiled to mush he is not interested.

edit - just noticed this is number 100 for me - way to go [:-))][:-))]

  12. OH gets these bites when in the garden. Another trick to try and avoid them - do not wear black clothes as they are attracted to the dark colour. A French lady told us this and believe it or not I think she is right. He still gets some bites, but nowhere near as many ....

  13. I seem to have built up a quite a large collection of loose change over a period of time. When I get all  those 1,2,5,10,20,50 bits of coins and my purse begins to bulge I empty then all into a box and start again.... I was just wondering if the banks here do small change bags like they do in the UK, where I can count this lot out, take it to the bank and exchange it for proper euros. (Reminds me of the days of collecting sixpences in a whisky bottle [:D]  - OMG I am feeling old at the thought [+o(] )

    Regards - Nell
