1. By the time I received their letter the "tel" light on the box had come on, but the phone didn't work. I had to use various neighbours' phones to call them as they won't answer "technical" queries any other way (I only have a Spanish mobile phone, expensive to use here, and one has to stand in the street here to get reception anyway). One huge problem is they won't give out names, so one can never get the same person again, and one has to go through the entire history to date every time. I was told at various time over the next 4 days (when I actually got a half constructive response).  :-

    1) My line wasn't connected yet.

    2) Disconnect then reconnect it.

    3) There was a "general" problem with the service in my area (probably untrue as the only general problem mentioned on their website was several hundred kms to the North)

    4) There was a fault with my USB key - I tried a new one I bought - it made no difference.

    5) Finally I had a quite long discussion with one of their technicians, who was obviously not in France (I'm told their base is in Morocco). He said I should connect the Neufbox to my "Prise Principale", which would be immediately next to my front door. When I said I didn't have one he said that FT had informed them that all installations had one. Mine doesn't; the installation is probably 20 years old at least.

I had already tried all his other suggestions and insisted they send a technician free of charge as advertised in their booklet (page 9 "La Pacte SFR"). He then suggested pushing the Reset button, which I simply hadn't noticed. End of story........

I realised all my fears of being without a telephone in the event of failure of either the Box or the 220v power supply had been realised, and wished I had kept the FT line. Also, our intrusion alarm system no longer worked without a "traditional" phone line, and I was facing a large bill to replace it with one using the mobile phone network, plus increased charges for rental and the daily calls the system makes.

I reckoned it to be worth 16€ a month, so I asked FT to reinstall the line. The cost of an additional line was not significantly more than this, so I now have a completely independent FT line for the alarm system and emergency calls.

From the letter they sent you it appears they have a problem with the line itself, which may be the reason nothing works.

Before I was told about the reset button I had given up on the Neufbox, and found that my old Tele2 Bewan ADSL modem worked (they didn't ask me to return it when they sent an Ethernet modem). If you stll have an ADSL modem maybe you can use that to check if the line works.

Edit: As soon as my SFR contract expires I'm going back to FT!

  2. When it first arrives only the Internet access works. When I was eventually told it was working for the 'phone also, it didn't.

It took SFR 4 days to tell me about the Reset button.

It is on the left side near the top. You have to push in a ballpoint tip or similar.

Edit: Our Siemens AS285 Gigaset works fine, connected to the NB via the clumsy adapeter they provided.

You should not have anything plugged into the old sockets in the house.

After 31 years riding motor cycles 10 of them racing at a high level and to many miles to count . I moved to France and enjoy the respect and space that the French drivers  give motor cycles , In the five years that I have been hear it has only been Brit plated cars that have pulled out on me “sorry mate I didn’t see you “

I still ride fast and enjoy it and still have a clean license and have had for 30 years!

You are welcome to run into the back of my 2 ton VW bus if you care to try to pass me at 100mph plus just as I'm pulling out to pass something slow.

I won't expect you to be going that fast, I'll be doing my usual 90kph, say 55mph, and probably won't see you at that closing speed. Hope you have good insurance, the two bikes on the rack at the back are quite expensive, and it probably won't do the engine much good either.

I may feel a slight bump, not inconvenient, but don't fancy cleaning up the mess after you go through the bike rack (or it goes through you).

Last time I had to do that my wife and I were trying to tie a pad over a hole in a skull through which we could see the brains. It was in Spain, and I didn't speak spanish then. Two Guardia Civil, on bikes, were trying to commandeer a car, but no-one wanted to take the casualty to hospital, which was a long way away. Finally the GC loaded the casualty into a car, which sped off. A few km further on we found the casualty had been dumped in a local farmacia (chemist). I stopped and walked back there. She was dead, so I mumbled my respects and retreived the bloodstained blanket we had wrapped around her, as she was shivering, in August. I thought it was a pretty miserable, lonely and slow way to die. Fortunately the kids were young enough to be interested rather than frightened as they watched from inside the van.

Come to think of it - just stay away from me, please.

  4. You can complete, date and sign the tear-off section at the bottom of your bills, the Titre Interbancaire de Paiement (TIP), and send it back together with a RIB. They usually even provide an envelope for this, with a reminder of what to include printed on it. From then on the company will take payments directly from your account.

I believe this is explained on the bills.

I was pleased to find such a simple system in place when we bought our first house in France some 20 years ago.

If you are running out of RIBs just make a few photocopies. They are only bits of paper with your bank details.

  5. I think you should check full details of them with your nearest gendarmerie before you bring them in. I did this about ten years ago, just after stricter regulations were introduced in France, and was told I could not have a pump action shotgun here, although automatic shotguns were allowed. There were also specific regulations about barrel length, etc.

You should also check whether there are restrictions on transporting them on your current permit.

  6. Lapeyre also supply to measure, details available at the store, but probably at around twice the price. I assume you are replacing the frames also.

There are doubtless many other suppliers; I use Lapeyre because they are nearby, their quality/price is reasonable, I can order online, and they inform me when to collect.

Our window openings were adjusted to accept standard dimensions when the windows were replaced. The cost of this came out less than the extra cost of non standard units, and simplifies any replacement due to breakage in the future. We also have larger windows than before in rooms which were a bit dark.

Standard windows come in 5 or 10 cm increments of height and width, so there is not necessarily much building work needed to modify the openings. There is a certain amount of building work required to fit window frames properly in any case.

Any supplier should be able to supply specifications for the tax people, and should also be able to advise you on this aspect.

  7. andyh4, It is addressed to me personally, but I don't agree that that in itself makes it genuine.

Edit: Weegie, Thanks, but I certainly don't respond to emails like this.

Edit: Parsnips, Weegie, I haven't noticed any messages, I must look more closely for any before I log into my account!

  8. Has anyone else received an email purportedly from Credit Agricole recently?

Last night I viewed an email, received earlier in the day, from Credit Agricole de Languedoc.

The message, very official-looking, basically says that due to new regulations they are obliged to increase banks' obligations regarding their verification of the identities and their knowledge of their customers.

It goes on to ask for an attached reply form to be completed and forwarded, together with a copy of an identity document and proof of residence, by email , by mail to their head office, or taken to my local branch.

I suspect this email is spoof, since my UK bank specifically states that they will never contact me by email, and always asks for copies of such documentation to be sent by post.

In any case, I am pretty sure it is impossible to have an account here without having providing this information when it was opened.

If it is genuine, I am amazed that a bank should use such an insecure method to contact customers. I shall visit my branch this morning.

Almost as 'off the wall' as when I saw a twin rotor Wankel engine and gearbox laying on a garage floor and thought to myself, "you know, that would comfortably fit in an MGB" [:-))]

I wouldn't. It would probably pull it in two [:D]

  10. Some two or three years ago our Council replaced the village's ageing and odiferous purification plant with a reed bed system. This was financed in part by the Department and Region, so I assume they are officially approved. We currently have about 500 inhabitants, but the system is designed to cope with an increase of 50%.

After the initial mechanical system which removes solids which have got into the system, it has several large beds which are filled in rotation by remote controlled valves. The initial plants looked unimpressive, but they have obviously been well nourished and have grown magnificently.

The water flowing away after treatment is perfectly clear and has no odour, and runs into an existing small watercourse which disappears across the vignes.

We had a grand opening ceremony where everyone had a chance to examine the (working) equipment at close quarters, including the insides of the separator. Although not everyone seemed interested in doing this, all adjourned to the Foyer afterwards for a glass or two.

  11. Back in the UK a few years ago, we noticed that aluminium cookware seemed to be unavailable. Apparently because aluminium is suspected to help cause Alzheimer's disease.

We no longer use aluminium foil for cooking, especially as bits of it seem to corrode and disappear into the food, especially with acidic marinades.

  12. Don't tell anyone you don't know well about the bird, pluck it inside somewhere and put the feathers in a closed plastic bag before disposing of them. It is illegal to take game without a licence, even if killed on the road.

Pluck very carefully to avoid tearing the flesh. Draw and truss as a chicken. Check the stomach and digestive system have not been damaged and contaminated the flesh inside.

Lots of recipes for pheasant if you search Google, or just roast it. A piece of beef inside improves the flavour and keeps inside moist, cover breast with a couple of bacon rashers and roast about 50 min in a moderate oven. Remove the bacon for the last 10 minutes or so to brown the breast.
