All the more poignant for me since they were my last neighbours in England and they father had done excellent work in my house.
My sympathies, Norman.

All the more shocking because she had been dismissed twice in Belgium.

Surely the hospital should have checked with her previous employers.

  2. I was actually just remarking on the French term for a walk-in testing station being a "drive péaton", i.e. a "pedestrian drive-in", which is as confused a term as "footing", which I first saw 30 or more years ago in Spain.

I am always fascinated at the strange terms and metaphors people often use, in any language.

Yesterday a BBC news presenter said that airline companies were having difficulties keeping afloat during the covid crisis.

Snap. But I didn't learn from the first time.[:(]
............. I have a horror of running any type of business as I have no experience/idea how any of them make money. So in these areas I keep quiet.
I was lucky to have some experience of office work and how businesses operate, mainly from holiday work when a student, and a couple of useful admin courses one of my employers sent me to, but we struggled with bumf and accounting for the first couple of years.

I'm afraid many people have no idea, and either pay professionals far too much to run their business for them, or do it all wrong.

Our gestor (Spanish business administrator) once told me that most of her Brit clients brought her all their invoices and other paperwork loose, in cardboard boxes, so her staff had to sort and identify them before they could even begin. She said we were the only client she had who kept our own books and used her services just to verify them and make the returns for VAT, and our and employee taxes and SS contributions.

I got a phone call one day from the female half of a husband and wife company who ran their business from an old shelter in one of the marinas, They had done some work for us a couple of years earlier: "Do you have a copy of our invoice? We are being inspected by the tax people, and for some reason they want to see all the invoices we have received and written. No-one told us about this, it's ridiculous, how can they expect us to keep all that paper?

Its been an interesting experience being paid not to work and having to turn away business or price myself out of what tiny market that has reappeared in order not to exceed 50% of last years monthly or average turnover or effectively be fined €1500 for doing so.
I looked at your place on Booking and was surprised at the prices.

EDIT: Your post might help some dreamers back to reality, but they would need to know more detail about your efforts, and some have put so much effort for so long into their dreams that they have so totally convinced themselves, that nothing will convince them until they find out from experience.

  5.
Suein56 makes a good point. Many "free" software downloads have a box you must tick to avoid downloading the sponsored software eg Avast, that pays for the "free" software. It is too easy to scroll down or through the small print in the haste to load your chosen software.

Some sites have more than one box to click so it pays to take a few seconds to scan before you commit.

CCleaner is an example that tries to download antivirus software.

We use Paypal very often, always log in manually to help remember the password too!

IMO Gmail is best for me.
+1

I have been more careful about those sneaky boxes which install unwanted software ever since Firefox made itself the default browser when I inadvertently ticked one.

I didn't like FF at that time, but couldn't find any way to get Internet Explorer back, and eventually had to reinstall Windows  to do so.

  6. Our son called me from Denmark a few days ago, worried about his UK Lloyds account being closed.

I told him to start worrying when they tell him it's being closed, after which he'll have plenty of time to make other arrangements.

Withdrawing credit cards isn't the same as closing accounts, and there are many options to replace both, in any case.

    Calm down dears.[:)]

  7. Windows Live Mail won't work on W10 after "Feature Update to Windows 10 Version 2004" is installed. This is an optional download, and W10 continues to work perfectly well if it is not downloaded and installed. I accepted it for my PC, but have not done so for my laptop.

Microsoft have been trying to get rid of WLM for a while, and support ceased some time ago, but now it is actively prevented from working if the above "improved version" is installed.

I changed my email client to Mozilla Thunderbird after WLM stopped working on my PC, after unsuccessfully trying a few suggestions I found on line, but WLM still works on my laptop - and should keep working as long as I don't install the Feature Update.

I have no problems with PayPal. You can contact them in English on 1-402-952-8557.
I think you have to put "00" before that.

That phone number is given here https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/contact-us, all other contact methods seem to require logging onto your PP account.

EDIT: BTW, I NEVER set up automatic log-ins to anything to do with money - PayPal, banks, Ebay, etc. It's not that much hassle to remember/look up and manually enter a few special passwords, and frequent use of them helps me to remember them.

  8.
The tax authorities can see the social services databases so no need to register separately.

As a holder of an S1, there is 8SH/SI on the French tax web page (or form 2042-C) to tick to get reduced charges on the investment income:

Revenus du patrimoine exonérés de CSG et de CRDS

Vous relevez d’un régime d’assurance maladie d’un État de l’Espace économique européen ou de la Suisse et vous n’êtes pas à la charge d’un régime obligatoire de sécurité sociale français.

You need to declare all your pension incomes, investment and your rental incomes (even though hat is not taxed) in order they can work out your tax rate band and revenu fiscal de référence (RFR).
There are also boxes 8RP/RQ - Vous n’êtes pas à la charge d’un régime obligatoire de sécurité sociale français, which is almost the same as above, maybe for people who have private or non-EU based health insurance, but I ticked those as well, just to be safe.

  9.
It sounds as though the location of bornes in places other than CPAM offices depends on the department. The only borne I've seen at a supermarket near here was withdrawn about 10 years ago and the main place to update is now at pharmacy counters.

The AMELI link I gave above only gives those in CPAM offices here. It would be good if you could check your department and see whether you also get supermarket and pharmacies as well, if you know they exist.
Your link gives details of (both) bornes in our department[:)]

It also says that they are available in most pharmacies.

  10. Mr Huge

I notice you have not yet had a response to your question on the VW Audi forum.

Possibly because Golf owners tend to use more specialised forums, such as https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php

However, if your car is running correctly, chances are that the people who replaced the battery followed the correct procedure, and hopefully fitted the correct type of battery.

OEM batteries for cars with stop-start use either EFB (Enhanced flooded technology) or AGM (Absorbent glass mat) batteries. AGM have superior performance, and must be replaced with AGM, but EFB can be replaced with either type.

Unfortunately I can't find a definite spec for the type of battery your car should have, and I have been unable to find any reference for your Renault battery in a language I can understand, so have no idea if they are compatible.

Your car's handbook should state which type of battery should be fitted. If it says EFB you probably have no worries. If AGM you may be looking at replacing it earlier than would be  normal.

Another reason for using an agent or specialised workshop to replace batteries nowadays is that besides being "keyed" to the ECU, on some cars the ECU also controls the charging of the battery according to its type and the time it has been in service, to maintain the optimum charge without overcharging, so it needs to "know" when a new battery has been fitted.

It is possible to cheat this protection by maintaining a 12 volt supply to the car's system so that it is not interrupted while changing the battery, but, if the car does have an intelligent charging system, the life of the new battery may be compromised.

  11. ET wrote: Well I imagine it was replaced by one of a similar kind, or it probably wouldn't be working.

Sounds to me like VW trying to keep work in-house.

Replacing a battery is not rocket science.

Unfortunately things are heading that way with battery changing and many other service jobs which were once simple.

I have a friend in the UK who had unfortunate results after fiddling with minor items on both a Japanese SUV and a Range Rover, after which they wouldn't start.

This resulted in his selling them both as non-runners at a substantial loss, because he wouldn't/couldn't pay for a dealer to fix them, and two so-called mobile mechanics took his money for the call-out, but couldn't fix it.

  12.
When you go into the Ameli website if you ckick on "CGU" it will open the Conditions. You can then read them. When you close that screen it will return you to the screen where you tick to accept the conditions.

If you have already ticked that you probably won't see it in that way again.
Thanks Weegie.

As I said above, I clicked on the CGU link at the bottom of a page, but was not asked to accept them, so perhaps I have accepted them and forgotten.[8-)]

  13.
nomoss: there has not been any need to change those web pages (although it might have been sensible) as all conditions are covered and still valid  ......................
I'm not criticising you, pomme, I just think that the UK and other governments should update the interminable information they spew out onto the web, or just remove outdated information.

I agree that the information is still valid, except that the bit inferring there is no withdrawal agreement encourages those (many) who still think this is so, having confused it with the agreement on the future relationship.

I have come across people on forums, who are unaware of what is already agreed, citing articles in newspapers casting doubt on matters that were settled in the WA - quite apart from the current chaos being created by the illustrious PM. I have read such articles myself, but can't recall the publication which produced them.

  14.
Had the same problem, went into Ameli direct, as also suggested.  Straight in, first page, accept new conditions (still no idea what they are, but needs must), and all OK.  Happily, but incidentally going onto the site reminded me to  download my last 6 months statements, so that's another chore over!
Did a window appear for you to accept the new conditions?

So far I have not been asked to do so.

  15.
When sailing I would much rather take advantage of the plus values that modern C21st electronic devices provide, especially those that have improved safety. Why on earth would people want to put their head in the sand?
Do you still carry updated charts, just in case?

  16. Despite the original message about having to accept the new CGU there is no message about this in my espace, and no reference to it in the link to the Conditions d'Utilisation at the bottom of each page.

  17. I just tried to connect to my espace on the Ameli site using the link sent with the original message re. changes in their CGU, and got the message they are saturated.

I then tried searching for Ameli, opened the link for the home page which was produced, and reached my espace from there with no problem.

I can also get there directly via the link in previous emails received in response to questions I have asked, which is my usual route.
