1.
................  Nomoss yes I know what you are saying but in a sense that would have negated the entire lessons wouldn't it. The whole point of freedom is expression is that you should not feel you cannot express a certain view for fear that you might offend somebody
That doesn't apply to most forums.

  2.
Does anybody know what Caen is like ?

It seems to be quite highly rated as a city.

Thinking of moving and Caen is on my list. Probably want a bit rural within a 15-20 minute commute of the city.

Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Kindest ALBF
It's not far from Pompey by ferry[:D]

Might as well live somewhere nice.

He was powerful because he wasn't afraid to practice "pork barrel" politics.
If you supported him you got a good deal if not you were totally frozen out.
He was an egocentric bully, who wasted a lot on vanity projects.

nomoss reminds me of the story that first he wanted  to rename the Region "Septimanie";  then he wanted to  rename all  the lycées after political figures he admired; and finally he wanted to rename the Mediterranean

La Mer De Frèche   (say it out loud)[:D]

    [:D]

Another thing I remember was the propaganda magazine which used to appear in or mailbox, I think it was each quarter, entitled "Le Septimanie", and which always contained about a dozen pictures showing him participating in an event, or presenting or receiving an award.

  4.
.............................................  A problem in France now is that a whole section of the population who are still smarting from having been expelled from Algeria in 1962 are seizing on this to justify their gut hatred for the winning side in that conflict. .......................................
And another problem in France is that a whole section of Algerians can't forget the terrible atrocities by the French, in Algeria during the war there, and in France in 1961.

This is just a sequel to the first Charlie Hebdo attack.

EDIT: Speeches like that by your Mayor in Beziers don't really help much either.

    and a massacre or two....

I don't care which tooth fairy people wish to believe in, but their belief doesn't give them the right to kill or torture me. I have the right to  disagree and  the liberty to express that opinion, but as beliefs are deeply felt  I shouldn't mock them either.

I do agree  that laicity is in danger of becoming as fundamentalist as a belief system as  some  versions of religion.

    Is it not!

Not to mention the invasions of "The Holy Land", euphemistically called "Crusades", which I mentioned earlier, when the poor gubbers being invaded had no idea what they were supposed to have done wrong.

Idiots - they were Christ-killers, of course.

  6. Maybe that teacher should have thought about what happened after Charlie Hebdo published insulting cartoons about Mahomet before he showed the cartoons to a class of Moslem kids. I don't think it was very clever, but he must have been aware of what he was doing - or really stupid.

There are many devout Moslems in France, not fanatics, who are really hurt and upset by such things, so it's not that remarkable that someone felt he was pushed a bit too far.

Maybe Catholic people here should consider their own country's attitude a few centuries ago when they sallied forth on the Crusades to kill every Moslem they could find, without the slightest provocation.

Yes, it was a long time ago, but believe me, that has not been forgotten................

I sometimes wonder what would happen if someone published cartoons of Christ engaged in some sort of pornographic activity. There are enough "religious" right wing nutters here and in other countries to produce a similar result.

  7.
In reply to nomoss. Got what oh wise one? If I got it I wouldn't be confused or asking for advice.
The last time several people on here offered you some advice at least two of us received a rude and sarcastic response from you. You haven't improved; you are still rude.

  8.
I thought I might start a new thread called holiday homes and residence permits but, doh, I can't actually figure out how to start a thread on this forum!
At the top of the page, just above the blue banner "The Complete France Post Bag" click on "France Forum" at the beginning of the string to this topic.

Click on the forum most suitable for your new topic, then click on "Post" at the top of the topic.

  9.
I thought I might start a new thread called holiday homes and residence permits but, doh, I can't actually figure out how to start a thread on this forum!

However it appears that this specific question has been raised in the Assemblée Nationale. An answer was given in June 2020 to the effect that France does not consider that the Withdrawal Agreement covers Brits who live in the UK and have a holiday home in France.

    http://questions.assemblee-nationale.fr/q15/15-28896QE.htm

"La situation des ressortissants britanniques désirant effectuer de courts séjours en France à l'issue de la période de transition, par exemple pour se rendre dans leur résidence secondaire s'ils résident à titre principal au Royaume-Uni, ne relève pas de l'accord de retrait"

So it is clear France has been alerted to this issue and has considered it. Remains to be seen what they have decided to do about it.
I'm surprised such a carefully considered and precisely worded agreement could have flaws in it.

ET. The @ in your pseudo confuses the forum software. When I try to quote you I get the message "Non matching quote blocks in post" until I change the "@" for "a"

  10. Since we only leave the house a little more than once a week on average, observe social distancing rules, have yet to come across anyone indoors without a mask at the doctor's, pharmacy or supermarket, I don't think we have any more chance of catching seasonal 'flu than Covid, so we're not too bothered if they do run out of vaccine.

If they do run out it probably means that nearly everyone else we meet will be protected, so we shall be close to having herd immunity.[:D]

  11.
Sorry but I'm getting confused, why would second homeowners apply for a CdS? You either want to be a French resident or a second-home owner. Up till now we have been second home-owners, but are in the process of taking up residency if the site ever opens up? We made this decision with all the financial implications it involves; so we can spend as much time in France as we wish and also can spend time in the UK. I'm of the understanding that the tax returns will start as soon as we become resident or at least possibly a short period before. Where does this five years come from? If that is the case, I've got it entirely wrong, and a lovely cottage will be going on the market as I head back to blighty
You still haven't got it.

  12.
If CdS get issued to non resident second home owners that becomes a Schengen problem not a France problem. Somewhere on the current CdS paperwork it states quite clearly that a CdS is not proof of identity and holders will need a passport for that. The only time I ever have to use my passport as an ID is when I use my rail discount card. The only time I’ve used that since I’ve had a CdS I was going to see if that would do instead but despite doing four separate train journeys my ticket was only checked twice and neither time was I asked for proof of ID. That was strange because up to then I’d been asked for my passport every time.
These links may help.

  13. I called our cabinet d'infirmières when we received the letters about our free flu jabs a few weeks ago.
Brigitte, who answered the phone, told me that the pharmacie doesn't expect to have them available until the end of this month, and to call to make a rdv sometime about then.

  14.
I bet the OP is really glad he started this thread.[:D]  Hi-jack doesn't come  into it.
I think the OP got a good selection of answers and now may be asking somewhere else in the hope of getting the answers they want.

At least Chancer already knows the score and may like a couple of the suggestions.

  15. A few random ideas, not necessarily in any order:

First, though, buying or not depends a lot on your age, i.e. how long you can work on it or wait before you have to sell/lease out for income when you retire. It's another thing to tie you to that area which may not be where you want to stay. Also, every year after a certain age you may have less energy, physical strength and drive to work as you did previously.

You could buy the whole lot and sell the building, or improve it yourself and rent it as suggested.

Does it have all services connected?

The roof may not be asbestos, many are actually cement reinforced with other material. Anyway, I don't think they have to be removed in France if not disturbed.

Does the tennis court have enough foundation to be used as a car park, especially for heavy stuff? The car park for a supermarket near us was increased by putting bitumen over adjacent land, but there are now large subsidences all over the new part due to heavy delivery trucks driving over the new area.

EDIT: I think the subsidences may be collapsed drains or other infrastructure[:(]

Can your area support a new business?

Are there many similar properties available but vacant for a long time around there? Our house has a large shop attached, which we bricked off and intended to rent out. We had a few enquiries, but the sort of rent we were offered, after taxes etc., was not enough to amortise the cost of separating the electric and water supplies from the house in a reasonable time.

Since then, more and more local shops closed down and stayed vacant, and chances of renting ours became less likely, so I reconnected it to the house, separated part of it as my office and we use the rest as a store. This also meant it was no longer assessed as a business premises, and as a store did not attract TdH.
