1. "“It

comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."

    "You

mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"

    "No,"

said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and

coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee

forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so

straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The

leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the

    lizards rule the people."

    "Odd,"

said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."

    "I

    did," said Ford. "It is."

    "So,"

said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse,

"why don't people get rid of the lizards?"

    "It

honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got

the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government

they've voted in more or less approximates to the government

    they want."

    "You

mean they actually vote for the lizards?"

    "Oh

yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."

    "But,"

said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"

    "Because

if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong

lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

  2.
Hello again, thought that we'd apply for these cards as had them in the past, though not been outside of France for fifteen years!

OH's went through with verification e-mail, my e-mail says it will be looked into first.

Decided to look out our S1's only to find that I don't have one, I registered for health care with an E121. Anyone else out there who registered with an E121? Presume this will still be valid as have had letters from UK about Brexit stating "as you are an S1 form holder..."

    Regards
My wife and I both registered with our CPAM via E121's (in 2004). The S1 is simply the new equivalent of the E121.

We both applied for the new EHIC, and received verification on 9 Nov, when I started the topic "New European Health Card (EHIC)".

  3.
It seems that 15 % of folk in France are anti any form of vaccination and 50% are anti the Covid jab, largely on the grounds that it had not been ‘proven’ yet.

What percentage of the population needs to be done to get rid of covid?

Should refusal be sanctioned in some way?
Yes, have them sign an attestation that if they contract Covid-19 they do not wish to be treated.

  4.
Difficult to understand why non-Europeans would have access to a  European heath card.

Are they going to be offered to all and sundry now?
UK pensioners here have had to get their EHIC from the UK since about 2010.

It seems to be mainly for people already resident or studying in the EU before Brexit.
Details of those eligible are in the link which pomme provided, where there is a note "For most people, EHIC may not be valid from 1 January 2021", and on the page reached via the "Apply for your new EHIC".

The person who contradicted my post on another forum is someone who likes to be the first to come up with exclusive information and thinks he has a position to maintain. He's welcome.

  5. I originally posted a link I had just received from the UK NHS regarding a new, post-Brexit EHIC for those Brits (with S1's) who have to get theirs from the UK and not from France.

I posted it on this and other forums, and immediately a troll contradicted what I had posted, implying I was posting false information, and posted out of date "alternative information".

I decided that it wasn't worth arguing, and that offering information which creates arguments and confusion does more harm than good. So I erased my posts on all the forums.

I'm sure people here who need the information can find it themselves.

I should add that the tip you gave me about Toupargel has been invaluable, especially for household  and heavy items.
I had always assumed from the name that they offered only frozen food, but in fact there is a whole range of products that can be ordered on-line and delivered to the door with a choice of times  in a 'window' that you can define yourself
Glad you found them useful. We only used them once, back in April, when we were worried by the crowds and lack of precautions in our local supermarket and shops, and found them reliable and reasonable value.

As there is a Carrefour Market only a few hundred metres from the house we now do almost all our shopping there, but go at around 12.30 when it's usually quiet, and if not, go home until the next day.

We have even been to Lidl and Aldi in Carcassonne a couple of times, but again, only when we expect them not to be busy.

  7.
I have made my opinion of him clear in anothe thread, BUT he does do things like organising several  distributions of free masks  before it was done elsewhere, and this isn't to be sneezed at even if it helps those who can pay the prices  that these boutiques charge rather than those on a minimum income..
I was just amused/bemused by the fact that they made only 17 deliveries in a day.

  8.
Advance pardon has been discussed.
Surely that means he has to admit the crimes to be pardoned?

We stayed up a bit late last night to watch some of Biden's inauguration party.

He sounded as if he was still campaigning, and the whole event looked like it was taking place in some banana republic. People leaping and dancing in a sort of tribal ritual.

  9.

OK, AP have called it for Biden. Phew! Now to see off fatty to the courts, bankruptcy and maybe prison. OK, one can hope.?
No  kidding !  However, he did say he would leave the U.S. if he lost.  So, better get those lawsuits going.

I don't think I have ever hated a human being more than I hate Trump. .......
That would be the icing on the cake!

But I can't see him doing something that would please the Democrats, and, anyway, who believes anything he says?

  10.
betise wrote the following post at 07/11/2020 11:32:

Honestly, if by DDL they mean deadline, why not just write it in full? For one use of DDL they then say "In constitutive systems: until the end of the application DDL (grace period)

set by the respective Member State / after the end of the DDL + certificate of application."

Well just think of all the keystrokes they have saved!

    For DDL meaniing deadline:
For other EU abbreviations - fill your boots (but it doesn't include DDL)

    https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/cybernews/abbrevi

    ations.htm

But, I do think that complaining about the EU using shorthand in its internal documents, is rather missing the point that these are internal documents. I'm sure that if/when the EU decides to write a leafelt about this for release to the general public, they will spell things out in full.
I think they are using textspeak, combined with bizspeak and verbosity like "MS to deploy the necessary human resources at their Border Crossing Points or to adapt the infrastructure" to make it seem they are really busy people. I'm surprised, though, that they didn't call the meeting a "Town Hall"[:D]

ET. I don't think it shows transparency. It seems to me that they want to infer (send a message to say) that they are getting tough with the UK.

Returning to my OP. They're using English for reports to a bunch of people from countries where they don't speak it. I know there are Irish there too, but they ought to use their own language.[:)]

  11.
I didn't see any inexplicable abbreviations?

(OK go on - call my bluff and make me wish I hadn't set myself up as Clever Clogs !)
Page 2 - EES & ETIAS - deciphered on page 8, I had no idea until I got there

Page 4 - SBC & MS - I guess MS = Member State, SBC I have no idea

    Page 12 - DDL - No idea

I think it's pathetic to use shorthand like this in an official document - Why???

It's not written for French people whose whole lives are filled with acronyms for outlandish titles.

I don't care anyway, stamps in passports provide a nice souvenir of one's travels. I put the dates and places of all the stamps on my previous seven expired or filled passports into a spreadsheet and sorted them by date, so I can accurately figure out where I was at any time.

I think WB is correct about them

  12. Recently published guide:-

Don't ask me what all the abbreviations stand for[:(]

I wonder if the EU are going to continue to use English for their communications? - maybe the UK should licence the use of it and charge them a fee, say a few million €'s per year.[:D]
Might be a useful bargaining chip in the negotiations.

  13.
Agreed, Norman. That's the tick box I used when I went to the boulangerie (4 kms away) this morning. And the bit about establishments that are authorised to be open covers post offices - in my way of (lateral) thinking.

    Re versions of documents:
As time passed, I think the previous attestations were... refined... to take account of ambiguous or missed points. I expect it will be the same this time and as long as the document comes from an official, government source, minor variations in wording shouldn't matter.

Most people continue to use the version they first download and print - they won't be regularly checking back for updates unless they happen automatically on the digital version.
I guess so. There wasn't much time to get them out.

The one I downloaded last night, just before the new rules came into effect, said nothing about shopping for necessities, or going out within a km for other than attending to the needs of a pet.
I think it was designed for leaving the house outside the limits of a 6 am to 9 pm curfew.

  14. I wish they would give serial numbers or ID's to the various versions of attestations.I have 3 current versions, all slightly different.

I have saved, and printed a couple of copies of the one from the Service-Public site, which seems to be the same as Catalpa's. https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/actualites/A14405

I can't see any category which really covers going to La Poste or even to a letterbox over a km away.
