  1. Iain, I think you're confusing ISPs (Internet service providers) with web hosts: an ISP allows you to access the Internet (via a modem), while a web host "hosts" your website on its server (a big computer that stores and manages information and acts as a hub to connect other computers). French hosts will certainly host your com, eu.com and eu names, though you might have a problem with co.uk. Why not stick with your current host and simply arrange Internet access via a French ISP? The ISP will give you an email address (e.g. [email protected]) but 1) you won't have to use it and 2) you'll do your banking via your bank's website, not via email. I haven't lived in the UK for many years, but I have my domains hosted there. Hope this helps.

PS Da**! Have just seen that Jane and Danny beat me to it by 1 minute!

PPS I use 1&1 in the UK, and they're good, too

Then follow your dream: stay there, set up a website to entice Europeans to visit CA, then take them shopping. When you've made your million, head back to Europe with your "housekeeper" and enjoy life.

Did I mention I taught myself to design websites

No - but the market for website designers is saturated in Europe

I owned a couple sites that crashed after September the 11th

Why did they crash after 9/11 ?
(NB: "crash" might not be the most suitable word to use here!)

  3. Hi Tim. It's good to get advice from someone who runs a computer business, but your reply is a little confusing. You wrote:

This is a common problem with USB modems and is why many people use a

    router

But one must have a modem to connect to the Net. A router is used to connect two or more computers to a single modem.

and to be honest, it occasionally happens with a modem but much

    less frequently,

Can you be a little clearer here?

I supply and use Netgear and Zoom modems and I finds

that about once a month I have to switch my router off and back on

    again.

Are these USB modems or some other kind of modem? And why do you have to turn your router off?

Sorry if I'm being dumb! - JimJams
