Has anyone got a suggestion as to what book,or author to read? I am looking for something along the lines of Cider With Rosie,by Laurie Lee,or the James Herriot vet series.I suppose older generation biographical, with a little humour, nothing too heavy.I also loved Pillars of the Earth,by Ken Follet, but his other books are nothing of the sort.Come on then, what should it be.I suppose I am asking too much for someone to recommend a book AND lend it too me(or swap!)? Thanks in advance

If anyone is renting out an apartment, unfurnished, for 3 years or more, and would allow me to telephone them for a 'brain picking' session (not too long!),I would very much appreciate it.Please reply or pm me.Thanks.Pogo

Does anyone know where to get a certificate of conformity in France, and the cost, for an LDV van? In the uk,LDV want £300,more than double all the other vehicles I have registered. Thanks

Hi bixy. All I can suggest is to take it for it's CT,and point this out before commencing, and ,as in britain,he may be able to re-adjust if neccessary. I am sure it will be a lot cheaper than new headlights([:-))]€€€€€€).

It may help matters if a disagreement of opinion was approached thus:"I disagree, this is how I.............." instead of such comments as "that is utter claptrap". I am very wary now of helping with the simplest of problems,as I have been humiliated on several occasions by people who,I am sure, are also prone to road rage, whilst locked in their safe car! The worlds greatest minds have differing opinions. Is it acceptable to be rude to someone when opinions differ[8-)]? Lets see more of this[:D],this[;-)],and this[:-))],and less of this[:(],this[:@],this[:'(],and this[B].....Sorry,omit that last one.

With reference to another post, check for the little arrows on your headlight, and if either has an arrow pointing both ways,it MAY not have to be changed.I have a Laguna like this, but have not tested the theory. It may be worth a visit to the garage if you have the double arrows, and then let us know if this theory is correct[;-)].Could save you half the cost.Good luck

I hope that I never get put on a list of sharks because of a 1 1/2 line description of work that I have quoted for.[blink].I hope the compiler of this list is qualified to check this type of work, does so,and also understands the costs of working as an artisan in france. When I went on the course to register,75% of us were considering returning to the uk as we couldn't see how we could make money with the taxes, insurances and social charges that were to be paid.I can't say whether this price is high or low, just to repeat what has already been said.Get some more quotes.Good luck in your hunt for good work at a good price[:)]

Hi.I wouldn't think that it would be wheel bearings. This is usually whirring noise or wheel wobble (but strange thing do happen!).I will ask the obvious.Have you pumped up the tyres? Have you checked the power steering fluid? Is there a squealing noise from the engine bay, especially when you turn? Are your tyres wearing evenly (tracking, wheel alignment).Sorry, can't help you with the french terms, but hope the advice helps.

Not word for word!! The doctor said go to Margate,it's good for arthrirtis,so I went there....and I got it. I knocked on the door of a guest house, and a woman looked out the window and asked what I wanted.I said 'I want to stay here',so she said 'Well, stay there then' and shut the window.I think we could overload this site with his funnies[:D][:D]

I used Mike Blaikie to do my roof at my house near Bonnat. He installed 3 velux style windows, and repaired the roof, and did a very good job, with no complaints at all. He is registered and insured to do building and roof work. [email protected]. He lives 10 mins from La Souterraine. If you contact him, please tell him that Paul from bonnat says 'Hi'. Thanks.

Hi.I have done a lot of tape and jointing, and would guess that if there are no really difficult areas, and the boarding has been done to a reasonable standard, 2 days and €500 sounds about right for an artisan.Materials would possible only be around €100. on my walls, the joins are invisibe after paint,so it can,and should be done by an artisan[;-)].Accept nothing less.[:)] pogo

Ax Les Thermes? I'll be there in 6 hours. How does 1 hour painting, 2 days ski-ing sound.Beautiful place!! I digress. If you look at a post on tiling rates, you will see that (us)artisans have to charge about €30-€35 ph to get a return of €8-€10 ph after social charges.I didn't realise this until I did the course to register as an artisan, but now understand why rates are so expensive.Still sounds a lot,but without seeing it,it is difficult to pass judgement. (I wonder why people want to employ on the black?[;-)]). Good luck finding someone.Pogo

Hi. There are storage companies around France, but they are sometimes difficult to find. I have just started a storage business, sadly too far from you,I'm in the Limousin, and would charge €50 per week for 15m3,which is a large van load,or €85 for 30m3 which is 3 bed house size. Hope this helps you with your pricing,at least.(and a free plug for me[Www]. pogo

Ok then,I'll go on my own.Billy no mates.......pogo[:(]

Hi. We have a 2 bedroom house and a 1 bedroom house that is available to rent ,near the 3 lakes area (Bonnat). It is a quiet area, but 10 minutes from shops etc. There are 2 'hitches'. They are currently for sale, but if we sold tomorrow,it would take AT LEAST 3 months to complete,so not too serious, and also we are not back in France until the 13th March,so could not let you in until that day, but if you cannot find anything this short notice, maybe we can help you. Please reply using this new e-mail address (major crash with our old one!). [email protected] .Kind regards.Paul

I know it will survive just fine, but when our cat's twin went missing last year,it wasnot a worry of survival,as it seemed more street wise than the remaining 'catdog' (follows me everywhere, sits on windowsill all the time if put out), but it is the thought that these animals re wondering where the warm fireside and lap have gone on these cold winter nights. Oh well,I'll just keep feeding it and see what happens. Thanks for replies -

Sadly,an old neighbour has died, and his poor cat, about 12years old but very healthy, sits on his window sill and miows to be let in. It is an inside and outside cat,and I am putting some food out for it, but was wondering what you all would suggest,as he was estranged from his relatives, had no visitors, and once the gendames etc left, the cat was left to fend for itself. I am sure it has a healhy mouse diet, and there are plenty of semi wild cats around, but this one obviously needs a bit of a cuddle and fuss.My cat won't get along with it,and although he always said it is friendly,it does always run off .would it be jumping the gun to ask if anyone would come and take it? The poor thing would not be missed by any family.I am in the north of the Creuse. What do you think ? -
Seeing as people seem in the know, and rather than hijack someone elses post,I will ask a new question here.
I want to be able to run,in an emergency as in the other day, a few items. A couple of 40w lamps,a fioul central heating pump, and a tv dvd sky box. During the day,i may unplug all these and run a fridge freezer,to top it up. I really don't see the need of running anything else on a 36 hour basis,so would appreciate if someone could tell me what size generator, with budget in mind, I need to run this.
I noted that there are some very technically minded people out there,but I read it like this ;
'the initial start up load is differblah blah blahzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'[8-)][8-)][8-)][:$]
So simple ,plain english, preferably monosilliba..........monosullen........... words of one syllable.[;-)]
Thanks all
