1.
I am shocked by the selfish attitudes expressed by some contributors to this thread.
Shocked huh Robbie ?

Bearing in mind that I'm neither rich nor poor and that I've never bought a new car in my life because I regard it as a mugs game, here's your opportunity to tell me exactly what you'd like or expect me to do ?

We're all selfish to one degree or another, it's just that some don't know it or won't admit it [;-)]

  2.
But what if you were affected?
I'm not so it's moot[:D]

What if I did say have an asthmatic grand child though, would my personal choice of car make any difference whatsoever to air he or she breathed, no of course it wouldn't.

If there's one thing I've learnt about life it's that precious few individuals have any material affect on anything and as I know for sure that I'm not in that elite group and never will be the choices I make affect nobody but me.

  3.
Primarily asthma sufferers, the elderly, the parents and grand parents of young children, those with breathing difficulties
None of those categories affect me at all and I'm with Aardvark, emissions wouldn't even enter my mind when choosing a car.
  4. It may be a bit of a leap of faith if you don't already know someone you can trust but if you're converting € to £ you'd be better off doing a deal with somebody in France who is exchanging the other way.

We occasionally have an excess of € and when we do we do we sell them to an English friend at the middle rate and she does a £ transfer to our UK bank.

  5.
I would be on a special list to make sure I had a cold fridge.
I have no idea what that means, special list to do what exactly, drop you off a gas fridge ?

As Pierre says, and as a simple Google search will tell you, insulin does not need to be kept chilled and as a diabetic of long standing I'm quite surprised that you don't know that.

My OH is also a diabetic of long standing and has been on insulin a number of times so I do have first hand knowledge of the topic.

  6. I hope you're not in big trouble !

Firstly the CG has to be crossed, signed, and dated by the registered owner who's name is on it, a UK dealer cannot do it.

Secondly you need a copy of the 'decleration de cession d'un vehicule' also signed and dated by the registered owner.

Now the really bad bit; at this moment you cannot legally drive the car in France and if you haven't got or can't get the  documents signed by the previous owner then you have spent your money on a car which you can neither drive nor sell !

  7. Both SIMs were trying to connect to the EE network but failing, even when they did briefly connect they dropped out immediately.

Both SIM's were tried in numerous different phones with exactly the same results leaving no question whatsoever that it was them at fault.

Not once in a 10 day trip to UK was it possible to use either SIM to make or receive a call.

Lycamobile were utterly useless and could only suggest that I check I had roaming enabled.

  8. Might I suggest that if 10 days loss of phone contact was enough for your business to quote "fall off a cliff" then you take a long look at the wisdom of relying on a single point of failure in the future.

TBH if mobile communications are that crucial to you it seems inadvisable at the least to rely on a fringe PAYG reseller instead of investing in a proper contract with a mainstream player whom I'm sure would not only have have had you back in business far quicker when you needed your new SIM but would also have been easier to transfer from if you felt the need.

It sounds to me that you were being cheap and paid the price !

  9. eBay and Paypal parted company in July 2015.

On the one UK Paypal A/C I have registered:

My UK bank for direct transfers

    The associated debit card

    A UK credit card

    My CA dual debit/credit card

All of those cards have changed at least once.

It's too long ago to remember exactly how I set it up but I seem to recall that it was to do with  addresses and finding a format which the system would accept.

I can buy what I like from where I like and with whichever source I choose.

  10.
The being connected and downloading updates to refuse non HP cartridges is enough to make me remain with my non Wi-Fi one.
Updates are entirely optional and cannot happen without the users active participation and acceptance, in fact in most cases you have to go and search for updates - then download them - then manually install them.

I've had HP multifunction devices for many years, my Trusty 950c lasted for over a decade and finally went t1ts up earlier this year to be replaced, eventually, with a manufacturers refurbished HP8600.

It doesn't accept non original cartridges unfortunately but despite the fact that a set of 4 originals are £60 or so on eBay they last forever, after a year and a fair bit of printing the 3 colours are still a good 1/3 full and the black although reporting empty for about a month continues to work.

In between had a dalliance with a Canon MG6150 - highly rated in reviews - and although it took 3rd party cartridges which were dirt cheap (it took 7 !) all I ever seemed to be doing was replacing them, a dozen prints or so and god knows how may cleaning cycles in between just demolished them.

If that wasn't enough 9/10 it took at least a minute of cleaning and frenetic internal activity before it deigned to produce anything, I took to leaving it switched on which seemed to at least reduce the cleaning, it went in the skip.

  11. Powering down is never a good way to close down a PC and I would never recommend it unless there were no other option.

It sounds like you have some problems with your PC though and it's always better to fix those  than find kludges to work around them.

A simple first step is to run the system file checker.

Using the search type in CMD then on Command Prompt which should appear right click and Run as Administrator

In the window which pops up type sfc /scannow then press enter.

Let it do it's thing then restart and see if it has fixed the problem.

  12. Coming over on the Dover-Dunkerque ferry on Tuesday night having already lost an hour due to an accident on the M20 (J11-11A) because of some 'experiment' - according to the signage - it took another good hour to cover the last 5 miles or so.

Turns out they checking every lorry individually at the bottom of the hill and because of that there must have been 1000 of them queued up in the inside lane.

The itself wasn't the problem though, it was the small number ars*hole truckers who tried to jump the queue in the second lane and then trying to get in line when they finally realised that they were going to have to and nobody could or would let them.

But for that we would have caught the 22:00 ferry but missed by minutes, so had to wait for the midnight which is what we were actually booked on.

On biometric passports, the first time 'er indoors flew into Stansted with hers it was hellish busy and she idly visually tagged somebody in one of the other queues and they got through much quicker than her, guess which queue we'll be using next time !
