1. "Teach your wife to drive"???????

No way would I want my OH to "teach" me to drive!!! Actually I have been driving perfectly fine for nearly 30 years and he still insists on giving me unwanted tips and advice whenever I happen to be in the driving seat.

Which raises the question :-

How come when buying a used car do people make a big deal in actively searching for the vehicle owned by "One Careful Lady Driver". Strange that.
2. I'm out too before lockdown arrives.    I am becoming a French citizen by the way, that way my vote might actually count towards something  I believe in, (if thats how it really works).

Perhaps dog knits - that has to be a harmless occupation surely?   Or maybe that is cruel to wool, you know, attacking it with needles and making it do things it was not meant for  [Www]

3. So shooting paper targets and clay discs is akin to harpooning an innocent whale, butchering it cruelly and feeding it to a collection of sushi-munchers in the name of scientific research IS alright then?

Poppycock!   How can you make such a comparison between the two?

The definition of a "weapon" is nothing to do with guns  specifically - indeed a weapon can be a knife, a table leg, a brick, a bottle, granny's vase, a shovel, a baseball bat, or a car driven by some drunken idiot. Indeed a three year old in uk a few weeks ago won hundreds of thousands in compo because another child whacked him on the head with a "weapon", ie a toy they were arguing over!!!  People die from all of these, oh and just ceasing to breathe of course.

Democracy?    Thats where you elect your choice of a prime minister yes?   What happenned in uk then?

In answer to your question K - there are shooting clubs all over France so there will be one relatively close to you.   Much as you don't like it Dog, shooting happens to be very popular here.

4. I don't understand why some people collect stamps, others train numbers, some collect beer mats or bottle tops and others play GOLF - a far worse crime in my opinion.   Just because someone admires the workmanship that goes into making guns and enjoys using them PROPERLY, that does not make them the devil incarnate surely?

Knives are worse than guns - proven fact - with  most knife crime committed with ordinary household kitchen knives instead of a Crocodile Dundee style thing.   Are kitchen knives banned?  No.  Likewise, MORE people have died due to CARS and motor vehicles since they came along than died in both WW1 and WW2 combined.  So ban cars??  Perish the thought.

And on the subject of "doing something to the detriment to the rest of society", what about the japanese who are still carrying on whale hunting because they say they are "doing it for scientific purposes...." rather than the fact they still want to eat banned whale products?     THAT is wrong, unquestionably.

Therefore if someone wants to spend the afternoon shooting holes in bits of paper  or clay discs then that is THEIR choice, likewise if they want to sit on the end of a station platform writing down train numbers its their choice, and if they want to wear lurid jumpers & silly trousers as they trash their way through the undergrowth at the golf course - that too is THEIR choice.    Is that not what democracy is all about or have I missed something?

Oh and you can still get injured with bb guns - they are on the way to being banned - and you try to buy a cap gun nowadays.  Impossible.

5. What about the shooters who shoot paper targets or clays????    Do clays have feelings too?

I do not agree with shooting animals or bloodsports generally, yet my OH and son have gun licences here (not chasse).    For them its as much about the mechanics of the guns as anything else rather than blasting holes in animals or birds for the "fun" of it.

6. No mention of it in my ancient recipe - perhaps the english terminology of "nougat" and the stuff we know as "nougat" are different?

Heres another one then from my own personal ancient tome "The Complete Farmhouse Kitchen Cookbook" circa  1975!  [:D]

                                                                                            Nougat

50g blanched almonds, 125g glace cherries, 25g angelica, 50g powdered glucose, 325g granulated sugar, 125g honey, 150ml water, 1 egg white

1. butter  18cm square cake tin and line with rice paper.

2. chop almonds, cherries and angelica

3. Put glucose, sugar, honey and water in a large pan and stir over gentle heat until sugar dissolves.

4. Boil carefully to 145c (using sugar thermometer).   It burns readily towards end of boiling time and froths up.  If you don't have a thermometer, put a teaspoon of mixture into a cup of cold water.  If its ready it will break into brittle threads.

5. Meanwhile beat eggwhite in a heatproof bowl until its stiff and stands in peaks

6. When contents of pan reach correct temperature/consistency, pour slowly over the beaten eggwhite, beating all the time.

7.Mixture thickens as you beat it, then beat in fruit and nuts.

8. Pour into prepared tin and place another sheet rice paper on top.   Texture is improved if you place a weight on top for a few hours.

9. Leave to set overnight.

10. Cut into bars and wrap in wax paper or cling film.

Hope this one works!!

7. Well done for sticking to your guns against the lot at ** alleycat!!  [:P]   Their mods have some pretty weird criteria for removing postings whereby something worthwhile such as yours gets removed, yet some bigoted old twaddle remains on show for whatever reason they chose to abide by.

As to SPA, we got our Charley from SPA in Cloyes sur Loire which was a wonderful place.  It was virtually new thanks to the Bardot Foundation and the staff were kind and gentle to all their charges - alas they are'nt all the same yet - however if the lady in question is willing to keep the dog until she can find him a family, well all credit to her.    I wish Henry all the best in his search for a family to call his own

8. Heres one that my grandmother wrote in a notebook about 75 years ago, hence why the language is a bit outdated.   I have not tried it personally but perhaps worth a try?

1.   Blanch 1lb almonds and cut them lenghtwise into thin strips.  Lay them on a dish in front of the fire or in a low oven with door open to get them to dry thoroughly.

2.   Melt in a sugar boiler 1/2lb loaf sugar.  When sugar is a rich brown put in the almonds - mix them well.  Cut carefully and you will have a soft paste which will harden when cold.

3  . Make some small moulds very hot - slightly but thoroughly oil them with a little sweet almond oil.  Put some of the mixture in one of them and with the handle of a teaspoon (previously oiled), spreasd it out to completely line the mould.

4.  Trim the edges when cold then turn-out the nougat.

Any large or small mould may be used and many fanciful devices may be worked with this composition.   The almonds must be cut small for intricate designs and in all cases the work must be done quickly for the sugar soon becomes too stiff to be spread into position.

Good luck!!

9. I must dig them out and have a look Christine but for whatever reason we didn't twig at the time.  Its was just rather bizarre that I found him on the website, then discovered his birthday was the following day!

He did have a nice birthday in front of the fire toasting himself followed by some stale fairy cakes that he and Harley thoroughly enjoyed.  Its a dog's life, although for some of them it is.   Right now the pair of them are firmly planted in front of the Godin snoring loudly.

10. The strange thing is that I went back to the Moree website earlier today and found Charley on their "adopted" chapter on page 10 under his original name of Harley.    With it were a photo of  this skinny boy  and his details..............................    it's actually his 6th birthday tomorrow!

Special treats for Charley tomorrow in honour of his birthday instead of end April which was the anniversary of his arriving here with us!!  He now has a birthday.

11.

And here they are pictured this past summer.   See the difference in the timid skinny boy who came to us just over 18 months ago, the big chap standing behind Harley in the truck, and now with winter fast approaching he is the big fat fireguard, rather than the underweight, miserable boy who was dumped on an apartment balcony whatever the weather.    Its amazing what love can do isn't it?

Anyone who is thinking of adopting an animal can look at Charley to see what a difference a mere 18 months can do for an animal who felt nobody loved him.   If you can do likewise, I'd urge you to Go For It!!

12. Well done Alleycat!   She is a lucky girl to have a new family to love and care for her.  Its just tragic that there are so many ill-treated and neglected animals in this cruel world.

I hope that seeing her looking so at peace with her new life that other folks will open their hearts to a little dog who needs some loving, or as in our case a BIG DOG!   The rewards are boundless.

13. Our huge grenier is fully insulated with that tinfoil bubblewrap stuff  (the highly grade one) onto batten strips, it was then plasterboarded between the beams, plastered and painted.    It has made a huge difference in both heat and sound insulation.     Perhaps if this is only a storage area rather than useable living space this might be rather OTT?
14. Disgraceful behaviour from a country that aspires to western values and clearly ignores them.   I worked in a company that traded and imported many Chinese goods - it seems that nothing matters in their relentless pursuit of good 'old USD $$s.    Horrible.
15. That will be "nufffink............." with THREE fs of course.  [:)]

I despair when I hear my own offspring speaking in what actually amounts to Text Talk, and whilst I do not expect everybody to speak and enunciate akin to Mr. Cholomondly-Warner, it would be nice to not have to listen to my own particular  bugbear of "Ain't got no....................." when I asked for something in particular in the shops.

As to French Drivers, is it my imagination or do they all seem to drive along the centre white line then force me into the ditch when they refuse to move across where they ought to be?   I do not mean pull over to allow ME through either,  I mean back on their side of the road., and thats not even mentioning the I-must-hang-off-the-back-bumper-of -that-car syndrome  that seems to affect the Normans.    [:(]

16. Leftovers are very rare in this house because if I thought for one moment the dogs would allow me to bin anything edible, well that would be a mistake!   I have no veg leftovers, cabbage trimmings, spud peelings or such like because that goes into the pig's supper and any rice or pasta scraps are the property of the chickens, ducks and geese.     Stale bread goes to the goats and the rabbit with the chickens nicking what they can, so effectively my pedal bin only contains non edibles because of course cardboard packaging gets used to get the fire going.   Nothing interesting goes in my bin what with the recycling collection too.

That saying, if I have leftover chicken I make a pilaff from it which is a very good way to make a little meat go a long way.

17. Well thanks ZPF.   I had just persuaded my OH that I NEED a steam mop for these wretched cream floor tiles he inflicted on me and then he reads that posting, hence now he says that since they are useless he won't buy me one.    Grrrrr.    Back to the scrubbing brush again I suppose, on my hands and knees with bleach water scouring five rooms to remove the muck.    [:@]
18. I rest my case.   I stand chastened.   Yes and oooopps I have finger-stutter as well  [:P]    Mods please tidy up for me, merci
