  1. Hi  Tresco.........The Marie sent round a chit put  in the post box to inform us the bins were available ...I have not taken up the offer of one yet.... I have always  carted  my garden stuff down to the dechetterie to get rid ..so know nothing of instructions as to use that comes with them .........the thought of rats is somthing else...... my wife has forty fits if she finds lizards where she does not expect  to see them .and we have plenty of them so ....rats would just be the end !......my next door neighbor was such a help to me when I needed to cut the hedge down from 14 foot to six when I bought the place  as they were overgrown connifers . I dont want to upset him ....but  I will just have to have words !   thanks for your input .....
  2. Our commune has come up with an idea for people to take from them compost bins to get us to put the garden stuff and other matter in rather than have it all sent to land fill ....great go along with that.... . We were sitting in  the garden a few days ago having a meal when I noticed a lot of flies and a smell that I can only describe as some dead animal nearby  it was so bad . I had to investigate  where it was coming from and the sound  of  buzzzing flies brought me to a section of my hedge On the other side of the hedge on looking through and parked against the hedge was the guy next doors recently aquired compost bin. .....I can only assume that madam has been putting her  meat kitchen  waste in with the garden grass cuttings etc and started off a blue-bottle  breeding colony ......I like my neighbors and they I am sure have no idea that they are having this effect  by their wish to follow the recycle code....I now have the job of trying to get  them to move the compost bin........or to stop putting kitchen waste in it that attracts flies and  I know they will be upset to think they have caused me a problem ......not looking forward to this one !

  3. Back in May in noticed that two cranes had built a nest in among the main power lines on top of a pole just outside the village  ( South Vendee 85 )..... I was wondering if they would make it without cooking themselves in a power short out ..... they seem to have done a good job ....Mr and Mrs Crane have produced two youngsters who yesturday were preparing to launch themselves into the air .  I suppose now they have been born on EDF,s  pole and  its imprinted on them that this is home ......they will be back next year looking for another one. ?
  4. My cousin bought in Limosin ..has a fansastic social  life ...and was told the neighbors were worried the place would be bought by sombody from Paris and were delighted when they heard the new owners were English . My house (85) was empty for ages  owned by a woman from Paris who could not get the job she wanted and went back to the city. locals seem to be building new places and  did not want to take on the work I did.....  so I do not feel I am doing anybody from the village out of a home ....close to the beaches so half the village is holiday homes it seems  if the state of some gardens is anything to go by .
  5. Good news ! how better you must be feeling .......I hope like mine the Notaire finds the work he has done for you was not as complicated and time consuming as he expected and the costs were not as much as envisaged and you get a fat cheque back from him.....I got over 700 euros......selling a house in the UK to a first time buyer was on a fixed fee set by my solicitor .....the work was probably done by a clerk....I had to chase them to get it done and not a penney back !  .....needless to say  I prefer the way the French go about it .

  6. Seems there is now a directive from the Prefect of the Vendee...  June 17.... stating it is forbidden to take water in certain basin's ..like last year...includes watering private gardens ....at the moment  between 10 am and 8 pm .....and filling of pools.. so not too serious...yet . We are in the River Lay basin  thats one of them ...I .have just read that the maize crop takes a huge amount of water..... more than other crops it seems ....and that the water cannons in the fields can chuck out in two hours what the average home uses in a year.....In  May when we planted  new rose bushes and lavender  water cannons were in use in our local fields ....while it was raining ! After all the rain earlier this year I was not expecting the restrictions already ... going back down on Friday better not buy any more plants.!

  7. Just checked the Disabled Holiday Directory site we use ..........still only has 10 properties on their web site and this is for the whole of France .....a lot of people have come to us via this site and link to our web site over the years ....
  8. I have read these posts with interest . I do not rent out my place in the Vendee which I could do as its 6 ks from the beach so  first thing ...I am not taking anybodies trade .

I have experience of "running " the holiday home rental  for two static caravans on a big commercial site in  Weymouth Dorset for my community service club in  Lions Clubs International  .  I have noticed that there is a demand for accomodation that can provide access for the disabled ...Our  "Holiday Home " was designed with the wheelchair used in mind.and on our club website we provide details of the size of the shower   (with a seat )  width of the doors details of ramp access etc...Think about it ...In Blairs Britain as it has been called here  there are lots of people with transport provided on motorbility allowance who take holidays .....I have provided accomodation to a family with a converted transit type vehicle who had two kids in wheelchairs .....I know they go all over Europe for holidays ......The point I  want to make is they and lots like them seek places by doing a search for "Holidays with wheelchair access...Holidays for the disabled etc "  A site we use to get people to  holiday in our clubs "Holiday Home"  is run by a lady who knowing I have a place in France offered to put it on the site if it was suitable as she had few French properties to offer. I have a bungalow so thats the sort of place they want. no stairs  Disabled may just  mean  a person with ticker trouble who cant do steps....some person with a knee joint replacement  that sort of thing .......Lots of people who consider themselves disabled have internet use and will search for their specific type of accomodation.....they may be able to get out of the wheel chair just cant walk far...this includes families with an infant  in a  wheelchair who may love to come to your place ..... if you have the access....... and if  they know where to find you ........do such a search yourself ...you might just find a new group of customers out there .....you might have the empty week they want.... with the access they want....  and you just cant find each other .

  9. Thanks for your reply Baz...........it seems my Doctor is away and the receptionist thinks only he can give me 2 months ? I was not concerned about getting them on the French system by acceptance of the prescription  just wondering if they would supply for payment  on sight of it without having to form fill in .......its very common medication taken by thousands of people daily and cheap.
  10. I have just put my prescription in to the doctors  and requested they provide me with more than a months tablets as we will be in France when they run out......I was asked   " Cant you get them over there ? "    good question... if they dont give me a couple of months  supply...can I just get my local  French pharmacy to supply them and pay for them.....will they make them up from my UK prescription ? or am I in for a load of hassle .
  11. Fast asleep when I looked......at least the nest is in a safe place .....On top of an electric pole outside the village (Vendee 85) there is a stork or crane  that has woven its nest through the wires and glass insulation pots ..I am waiting for the flash when  the bird or one of its chicks shorts the power out and we are plunged into darkness .....no doubt it will be when the footballs on ...The stupid bird has been provided with poles with frames on the top to use.... they are  all round the village put up  in the fields but  has chosen the electricity pole  and cars passing below it........
  12. I have been told that if you open the mole hill to find the run then feed a hose in and flood out the runs it P...es them off and they are likely to move away to dryer ground....like next door !    havent had to try it out yet.....
  13. Last year when I noticed Flybe went to La Rochelle for £29  I was keen to use them as I live only half an hour from Southampton and the house is 34 klm from  La Rochelle......I soon changed my mind when I worked in the taxes and as much as I hate paying Brittany Ferries high fares it was a better option cost wise .
  14. I have recently bought on ebay a no longer used sky box as the person who sold it had upgraded..£19 ..It came with the discontinued card in it  which I believe ( sombody will soon tell us otherwise ) acts as a free view card for all the channels you get in the UK..although you get most without a card ...I bought a  sat finder also on ebay for about a fiver ..(.connected in- line it sounds a high pitch tone when you find the signal )..and a white 80 CM dish from our  local tip also for a fiver .....even came with a wall bracket....it took me a couple of hours to set up but its all  fine  we seem to have all the free view  channels ...May I suggest you buy the co.ax cable locally as the brown stuff we use is not I believe acceptable in France..........it sounds like I am a tight old  git ...(.well apart from that.).but  believe in recycling  and am delighted with the reception we get in the South Vendee near La Tranche sur Mer . I dont think you will have a problem....if I can set it up anybody can do it .....the SKY box shows you the signal streangth and locks on when you get the dish lined up ....compass  ...point dish to south .... a.vertical dish .....point it well  to the East of South then move towards south to 23 degrees or so from   dead South and bingo....you should have found  the signal . thats all I did !   Good luck !
  15. Last flight home 27th October  some flights are from £15.I looked at  .........most in the £40 plus bracket then hire car cost for me at Airport ....  Have thought about buying a cheap run about to leave out there ......anybody done that and was it easy to arrange change of ownership etc  ?....... as you can guess  new to all this .....just got the house last August  so just finding out whats what at the moment . La Rochelle is only 34 kilometres down the coast ....would be handy .
  16.   I recently called into our local Mr Bricolage .....outside on display was a patio table set.....just what I needed...so bought a table and 4 chairs.....I also bought two and a half ltrs of paint to do the shutters..........guess what was cheaper....yes... the patio table and 4 chairs!..The paint is supposed to be good for 10 years ......so.....I am now looking forward to a close examination of the shutters in 2016 to see if  it  "does what is says on the tin  "  ......  £40 or so for the paint .... I wonder if I will be around for a refund if it peels in nine  years time ?
  17. A friend has a fantastic  new house Florida which he rents through agents....Last month he took a telephone call from the guy in the house who complained that he had weeds in the flower beds. He told me he had been on the phone from the UK to a gardener service in Florida and just spent out 50 $ on a chap to go round and do some weeding !.
  18. Before we got the house I was a caravan user .Three years ago I met a couple with a big motorhome who were on the same site as I was .They were waiting for the local  Puegeot  main dealer to get for them and fit a small  window that had been cut out of the cab with a stanley knife ...they had secured the cab doors together inside  while they slept in the aire so were not robbed .. They woke up  while the break in was under way put on a light ..and they heard somebody run  get in car and drive  off .. ..they were very shocked more from the fear of what might have happened to them than what actually did !  ... .I   think I would find a camp site or  38 euros worth of double room in a BB Hotel  for the night rather than stop in an aire ....I think you would get a better nights sleep . ..I read that East European nationals are suspected of being behind a lot of crime taking place in aires ...looking for passports as well as money .

  19. Thanks for the info guys.....I shall leave it . I thought it might choke out the grass. as it gets so thick ...but as we just visit throughout  the year it can take its chance flowering and helping the bees when we are not there...... and we will mow it when we are ....The speed it grows the bees will get more use out of the lawn than we will no doubt !
  20. I now wonder if I should leave the purple clover I have masses of in the lawn or get rid after going to look up a suitable weed killer only to find a site that states white clover in the lawn is an advantage ! and some people actually sow  white clover seed.

The clover after a couple of months away was in full purple flower on our return and we had cut the grass close when we left . I was surprised to see the height of the stuff in such a short time ...it mows off fine so the question is ......what to do with it in a lawn in the Vendee where it browns to a crisp in the summer .  .is the  PURPLE clover an advantage in the lawn  as WHITE is  reported to be or should I get rid of it ?

  21. This year I will be at my place in July so was wondering where in the Vendee (85)  was the best place to be on Bastille Day to see the celebrations. I believe there will be a fireworks display at La Tranche sur Mer which is near to me ....does anybody know what else is going on .
  22. Hi Andy.....Mine is a Grundig taken out from the UK and as far as loading up SKY goes I think they all act the same .....mine has been on and off a few times the first time it took ages to load up. as it was finding all the channels  after that is seemed to grab them quite fast when switched back on ...you should not find switching off much of a hassle at all.... Frederick
  23. I registred with Pipeline card a long time ago.....they have far exceeded the number of registrations they needed to get it "off the ground "  negociations we are told are on going .....l we wait for the card......I  now wonder if it will ever happen .
