  1. I like that.. 'a whim and an adventure'...

How many people never get the chance or simply don't have the courage to change their lives? So many on this forum (and so many we meet around us in france) have fascinating stories to tell. France may be a part of europe and accessible to all, but there is still a big spirit of adventure in so many of those who have made the move - whether that is temporary, long term or backwards and forwards.

And a whim and an adventure can just as easily work the other way - taking some adventurers to their original home or on to somewhere else.

Variety is the spice of life eh?

    Good on all of you!
  2. Now. I've just been corrected.

What we are actually doing is buying standard windows from brico which are around 2.5 cm too small all round and we are making a wooden frame to reduce the size of the existing opening to accommodate the window. And as far as the small door is concerned we've had the double glazed unit made in the UK, bought a hardwood frame here from howdens which is the right width but far too high, so that is being cut down to fit.

We are also mousse fans and used it to seal the eves.
  3. I know i'm catching this thread a little late but we are just about to do exactly what Chancer has done on his house. We are converting the smallest barn known to man (please advise French version of the Guiness Book of Records) and all windows are non standard sizes. So we are buying standard windows from Brico and adjusting the frames. So much cheaper too and they seem a decent quality. The door however we have chosen to get made up in the UK, bought the glass and a joiner friend is making the frame. We decided to go this route for the door because of time rather than anything else.
  4. What about that green plastic sort of chain link stuff? Goes up quickly, it's cheap, doesn't stand out because of the colour and can look quite smart. We had to fence our perimeter to keep our dog in and (mainly) the local dog population out as they had been accustomed to using the garden as their own personal latrine for many years. The finished fence looks not bad at all and fits in pretty well as many of our French neighbours use it.
  5. Well i'm stumped.... Am v jealous of CJ who is new to Rebus. I just wish another writer of Rankin's calibre would pop up from somewhere with a series already written. I would take myself off somewhere peaceful and not move for several weeks!

Clare Francis was never prolific but she wrote 2 or 3 good thrillers. As a teenager i was enthralled by early Gavin Lyall and Victor Canning, then Desmond Bagley. We will never see their like again, more's the pity.

Do agree with the comments about Rankin's new series, The Complaints etc. Just not quite got it have they?
  6. You can't beat Rebus. And unlike many authors who go off the boil, Rankin's last two were the best of the bunch. Michael Connolly excellent too.

I've just downloaded a couple of Stephen Leather's too. I had never heard of him and IMHO he can't compare with Rankin, but i enjoyed them. The hero is ex SAS.

Peter Robinson good although his characters and storylines cannot be compared with the heroic and completely marvellous Reacher!!
  7. How about that relatively new website started by the blonde property developer who goes by the surname Beeny? (I have no links or particular knowledge of it. ) but I think the premise is for friends to link up their friends. In other words avoiding the very random and impersonal nature of most dating sites. If, for example, everyone who reads the forum thought about all their single friends and Wooly, there may well be someone out there who is known to one of us (and therefore vouched for).

Wooly, it might be a help if you put together a likes/dislikes/interests list to guide us???
  8. Interesting thread for me as I'm currently a new camera. The choice is overwhelming for someone with little knowledge. I've tried going into a couple of independent retailers for advice, but then when I look up their recommendations I see unfavourable comments.

Light is very important to me, dusk, dawn and skies and landscapes too. Wooly, I'd like to be able to get a shot like yours too. But, I don't want to be changing lenses for every shot and my last Sony cybershot with a zeiss lens was the most complicated thing I've ever come across.

A friend is recommending a canon eos 500. The price is pretty attractive as it's currently under £500.

    Ideas/suggestions/recommendations please!
  9. It seemed to me very like his remark in response to being asked if he was in love with Diana as 'whatever that means'. Possibly his attempt at being cryptic...

Did you note camilla's response? Unless my ears were deceiving me I'm sure she used the expression 'it's wicked'. I'm still cringing......
