1. Derris is the stuff you want. I use CP Jardin's Bio range "Pucerons et Autres." From brico's/garden centres. The Autres include Altise (which is the flea beetle)

Other alternatives are companion planting mint with brassicas, and also bruised elderberry leaves can deter them.

In late summer there is sometimes a

significant migration of adult beetles from oilseed rape fields

into gardens when damage to mature plants can occur.

Eggs laid near host plants hatch in late-summer. The beetles feed for a few weeks before overwintering.

  2. Same problem here, i'm after a mig and oxy-acetylene equipment, (including cutting torch) but yes the price of teeny bottles in bricos is just laughable, and impractical. I haven't yet got round to sourcing a proper alternatives. I think there is a welding shop in Perigueux (24) which i am going to have a look for and will ask about bottles etc.

Although, giving the fact that the bricos are almost giving away arc welders at the moment, i may just get a really cheapo one to be getting on with, i don't much like using them though.

  3.
An English woman spoke to me in a supermarket in the Dordogne today.  She said they had retired to France and bought a house here, to which they moved 4 days ago.  She said they are vegetarian and speak no French and all they had eaten in the last 4 days was cheese, cheese and more cheese.  She was clearly fed up of cheese!  I suggested they might cook something with chick peas.  I'm not vegetarian, but I could certainly think of plenty of vegetarian things to eat that don't involve cheese or Quorn.  They said the only cooking they had done was to heat up a tin of vegetable soup.  I didn't think to ask her whether they had ever visited France previously or whether they knew anything about French cuisine.  We just can't understand why anyone in their circumstances would move to France.  I mean, if they had visited France, then surely they should know what to expect foodwise (although I expect that given time they will find food for vegetarians - if they can learn some French).  But then, surely, as vegetarians, they should know something about vegetarian cuisine and be able to sort themselves out foodwise regardless.  I find it difficult to believe that anyone could move to France and know so little.  They might as well have moved to the Moon.  I realise all people have different reasons for wanting to move to France and I certainly have many reasons for wanting to have a home in France - even though it will probably never happen.  But even though I have spent a lot of time in France, with French families, in gites and camping, I do feel there is still a lot more research to be done.  I daresay I will come in for some flac from people who have moved to France knowing nothing about France, but - oh well, we were just astonished.
Poor woman!!! She only arrived 4 days ago (maybe she doesn't even have a kitchen) and is now the subject of a 'brits in france' debate!!  We moved over here after never holidaying here and with very limited language, and it took a few weeks to find our feet and work out what to buy, from where and what it was called in french etc, but who cares, it was our choice to do it that way. Research is all well and good, but for some folks they rather just say let's just do it, and dive in at the deep end, otherwise they never get any further than research and talking about it. Depends on your circumstances/character etc, doesn't make one right and one wrong. Some sink some swim, that's life. Good on anyone prepared to take the odd risk in life to achieve their goals.

Wonder if she's reading this?! Can't be many British retired ladies in the dordogne, that were talking to a lady in a supermarket yesterday, and who only moved over 4 days ago...........[Www]

Either that or she was after a free meal from you Jill!

  4. Hi figa,

Could it be due to it drying out too much between watering?

Otherwise maybe it isn't quite acclimatised to being in put into full mid day sun yet?

Might also be worth giving it a good misting of water over the foliage/ buds, in the evenings for example.

    Well they're my guesses anyway!!

  5. I didn't know they still made such things! (Watches that is.) I don't own one. My Dad always seems slightly obsessed that i don't wear one. If i am out i have my phone, if i'm in i don't care what the time is!

EDIT: Same goes for alarm clocks, i always use my mobile phone.

  6. Copper tape works really well. In the veggie patch you can cut the top and bottom off of plastic bottles to go over the plant and put a ring of the tape round it. Same around plant pots.

I tried a mixture of hair and eggshells around some parsley i just planted out, but no luck it had all been totally scoffed by the morning. [:@]

I am growing melons/cucumbers, and as the plants were getting eaten so much while in pots, i planted them out quite early with a lot of sand around the base, and they have survived!

MIL has tried nematodes with very limited results.

My newest hobby is slug slinging. [:D]
I have been trying the corporal cuddling on one of mine today, as she was being naughty, it seemed to work! [:D]
Did you get her to yodel for you too?[:D]
No, she refused to make a noise, maybe it didn't annoy her quite enough. I'll try on the other two.....[:D]
How about pigs?
I know this one, but I can't spell it.[:D]

It's got G's in it. How crazy is that?

It's something like this - Grwram-grwaam. I'm very sorry about my terrible accent.
Miffy has informed me that pigs go Gron Gron! [blink]

  9. Go on then a quick pint to celebrate the fact my dishwasher has just arrived! (himself finally cracked under the pressure of being the main washer-upper!) [B]

Don't worry till you get there Frenchie, because it may be just fine, and then just focus your mind somewhere else and keep telling yourself it'll soon be over, because it will be in no time! Good luck!

  10. Anyone know a good online supplier of decent safety/work boots in France? Looking for really good quality, heat resistant sole, steel toed and in ladies sizes, oh and lightweight!

My current pair have lasted me about 6 years with a lot of constant use, and are finally giving up. [:(]

  11. I also want to be put in a hole in the field (no box), and have already picked a spot! So am also interested how it'd work. No being flown back to UK, or being cremated, or going in a French cemetery (they are horrible). In the ground, in the country, and a tree on top if anyone feels like it. Simple and natural.

Himself thinks the same but also wants a stake though the heart, but that might be more difficult to arrange!?

    What a jolly topic!
