  1. I contacted EDF recently (on their English language email facility) to enquire about getting an external meter installed as we are not always there when the meters are being read. I received the following reply which might be of interest;

    ''To set up  the"boitier" which anables us to read the meter outside , we suggest you to wait.
     From 2010 will fitting our customers with SMART meters, which we can read at distance.''

    Best regards

  2. I have bought a fair few items from Ikea both directly and on line (the kitchen) and have always found the service very good. Don't forget however that there are plenty of other good furniture shops in France, some like FLY have some nice stuff and will lend you a van free of charge to bring your things home with you. This can be very handy if you need to get a few basic items eg beds to get you over the first few weeks. Good luck!
  3.  I know I saw some reference to the proposed reduction in the tax allowance for those on the tax regime of micro-BIC foncier, which is being reduced from 71% to 50% but I cann't seem to track it down now, I presume this has been legislated upon at this stage and that the new rate applies to all gite income declared under the micro bic regime...sorry if this has been discussed earlier!
  4. Both are fine outside in frost-free areas. Lemons are particularly hardy.

    If you are bringing them inside, keep them in a fairly bright place where the temperature doesn't change much (avoid drafts) and don't over-water.  Give them a liquid feed before you place them outside in the spring.

  5. Don't know what happens elsewhere but in our village in Languedoc some people decorate their houses and the Mairie organises a party in the afternoon for the kids where they get to dressup and eat loads of rubbish! No tradition of calling door to door though.
  6. From the CCF website 'La Direction de l'Aéroport informe les passagers que le mouvement social ayant fortement perturbé les vols en provenance et à destination de Carcassonne est dorénavant terminé.

    Les vols seront assurés normalement à partir de demain, mercredi 28 mai 'or the helpful  English version of the above 'Flights could start taking off again tomorrow, Wednesday 28th.''  does anyone know if  all is back to normal yet?

  7. All bookings made with Ryanair after 3 June will be subject to a £4/€5 priority boarding charge. This facility was previously free to those making online bookings and carrying only hand luggage. They say;

    ''By charging the same fee for priority boarding for both webcheck-in and airport check-in passengers, we hope to ensure that priority boarding will always be available for sale at airports for family members and groups who wish to purchase it.''

  8. I'm still not clear, having read previous posts on the forum whether it is necessary to fill in a 3926/3116 if you are not (fiscally) resident in France, I am just declaring a small amount of income from gite rental. Any advice, thanks.
  9. We have beech worktops both at home and in France In France we use the IKEA 'behandla' oil which absorbs very easily but seems quite light in texture and needs to be applied a bit more often than the one we use here which is called 'Osmo' which seems thicker and lasts longer between coats. It is a mixture between  oil and wax and is pretty good. I see on the back of the can that if you require ''a deeper satin finish the surface can be polished usung 'Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner' also available as a spray''. Haven't tried this but it might be worth looking into. The can says they have a website www.osmo.de.

  10. A while ago in Carcassonne Airport the man in front of me hired a car which he hadn't previously reserved from Hertz. It was for the same hire period as my own and he was only quoted about €10 euros more than I had paid on the net. That said ,as previous posters have said ,I don't think I'd like to risk not making a prior booking where at least you have a choice of cars, providers and prices.
