  1. Chancer, just for info, 'port arms' is when the weapon is held semi-horizontally against the chest, with the barrel pointing safely at the sky. To have a finger on the trigger in the circumstances you describe is totally unprofessional and contrary to any weapon handling policy I have ever experienced. I wonder if the safety was on or off ????????
  2. I don't have any photos of mine - sadly.

It was bought from a farmer who had it in a shed covered with chicken droppings. A complete-ish car if you included the 4 cardboard boxes of bits that it came with.

It took me about a year to totally rebuild including new plywood floor boards and a handbrake cable fabricated in the power station workshop. It did pass an MOT at first try though.

Whilst I had a hood, it had no side screens which didn't really impress Mrs PD who was at that time my GF, she still married me though !

I used it mostly with a tonneau cover, even in winter.

One thing I do remember was thinking the handling was a bit 'odd' when going to work one day, only to find the axle u bolts on the rear springs had sheared and effectively I arrived at work with fully floating back axle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was OK after another workshop fix.

It did burn a lot of oil though, I had to keep a gallon can permanently in the car, good for a smoke screen when setting off.

edit, A huge ( 25 gallon ? ) slab tank on the back with no fuel gauge, I don't ever remember having it more than about 1/4 full on my pay as an apprenticle.
  3. Just an ''off the wall'' thought.

You could mount the camera on a short arm, facing forward, on the passenger side of a RHD vehicle which would replicate a passenger who checks if it clear to overtake.

    Are such cameras weatherproof ?
  4. ''Just as a matter of interest. When I left the hole called St Athans I swore that I would NEVER go back and I haven't!''

I was once posted to the MU at St Athan. By some fast persuasive talking to the Wing Commander (Eng ) I got the posting cancelled. Unfortunately a friend of mine was posted there instead - he was not a happy teddy at all.
  5. If, as has been comprehensively reported, there are worries about people illegally entering UK, would it it not make sense to have more rigorous entry checks ?

How are exit checks going to solve anything? Surely the UK Govt is not really concerned about who is leaving, after leaving such people cease to be a problem or a concern - until they try to return.

    Too simple ?
  6. '' So, from this tournament, which of the six sides should the Southern Hemisphere teams fear in the World Cup.''

    Wales.

As for Sexton - I take it he is the new ''Irish Rugby Saint'', He can kick ( more often than not ) but apart from that he is pretty average IMHO. Leigh Halfpenny is better, with Dan Biggar not far behind.
  7. What a contrasting week end.

The Wales - Ireland game was brilliant, the France - Italy game was dire.

Who was / is the French No7, he is an evil thug who should have been red carded.

I sort of go along with the MOTM being the Ref, but failing that it should have been Spedding.
  8. England appeared to play at half-speed for 75% of the time.

Ford is / was very poor.

Punting the ball upfield is all very well if it stays in the air long enough for it to be chased, if the rest of the team can be bothered that is, England were very slow.

Discipline was extremely poor, far too many penalties given away by sheer silliness.
  9. France were pretty disorganised apart from about 10 mins at the beginning of the second half.

However, they lost 9 points due to poor penalty kicking, add those into the scoreline and then who wins ?

France desperately need a good, consistent and accurate kicker, surely there must be one somewhere in the French league.

They also need a new coach.
  10. Further to my original post(s) about getting a Rayburn.

I am grateful for all the comments ( including the ''elderly' bit ).

As a result of the comments Mrs PD and I have had a serious ''pros and cons'' discussion about our plans, these included a realist re-appraisal of all aspects, installation costs, running costs, future work load ( age thing again ), convenience etc etc.

Yes, it would be nice to have a wood burning CH cooker, a bit like turning back the clock in a way but.............

The cost from Rayburn France is likely to be very very considerable, based on their mark up for other Rayburn models. Very possibly approaching 10K + assuming they do in fact start to market the 370SFW this year. There is also the 'minor' problem that the nearest Rayburn installer is over 100km from us.

Getting the cooker into the house is, because of the layout, a major issue whoever does it, requiring ( IMO ) some fancy crane-age.

The add on costs of a suitable F + E tank is substantial, if the requirement is for an open vented system, which I can't see any way round.

Running costs would be cheaper than alternatives but summer cooking would still require a gas or electric cooker, thus degrading the overall running cost savings.

We have considered the age thing and, whilst not considered to be a problem now or hopefully for some years who knows ?????

Convenience-wise, a switch on and forget system is worth a certain financial downside.

Town gas is a non-starter, it's just not available.

GPL is, as far as I can tell, not viable because of fuel costs.

Pellets are not viable on the grounds of installation, pellet storage and running costs.

Basically it leaves oil. I have always said oil is a 'no-go' because of ever rising fuel costs but I really think we are going to have to bite that bullet.

Having, for good or evil, decided to pursue the oil burning route we are now having to make decisions. What brand ?

I know that the current state of opinions is ''don't buy from UK'' but it does appear that there are some extremely good oil boilers there which can be supplied with burner nozzles for French 32sec heating oil.

I would appreciate comments from the forum regarding the installation rules for French oil burning installations. For instance :-

Oil tank positioning, is above ground, external, double walled ( ie integral bunding ) acceptable in France.?

Will an oil company supply for an installation with a boiler of UK manufacture ?

Are external, wall mounted boilers acceptable in France ?

I a presently waiting to be contacted by Local oil CH installation companies who will be asked about installation, commissioning and routine servicing of a non-French manufactured unit.

  11. DraytonBoy,

You seem to me to have a very strange interpretation of my posting.

Nowhere did I say that the wealthy are ''compelled'' to put their money in tax avoidance schemes etc. They are however entitled to.

It is a fact that tax avoidance is perfectly legal. It is the arrangement of your financial matters to minimise your tax liability such that you pay what the law demands you pay. I know nothing about Bono and his band but..... if they utilise the laws of Ireland to minimise their tax liability whilst staying within the law then what did they do that was wrong?

If the tax laws are wrong then change the law but, until then, don't complain that people, wealthy or otherwise, are obeying the law.

Paying tax is a duty that all of us have, none of us are required morally or legally to give the Govt more than is required by such tax laws as set by that Govt.

Anyone, me, you, Bono or whoever are required to pay ''what's due'' and those ''dues'' are not set by us. If you ( or I ) wish to pay more than is required then we can, I suppose, make a donation to HMRC or whichever Tax authority you come under. I don't know if the facility exists for such donations or how the tax authorities would account for them but you appear to think that ''the wealthy (millionaires and above) should do it.
  12. '' the wealthy (millionaires and above) should be encouraged to ignore the tax avoidance schemes etc and pay what's due. ''

What is due is dictated by the tax laws, the law is the law, it has no moral value.

To encourage people ( wealthy or otherwise ) to pay more than the tax laws say they should is, in effect, to encourage them to break the law. :-)
