  1. A few years ago our doctor retired and was replaced by a husband/wife team (Greek/English) both British trained doctors (who have a young daughter at Maternelle).  He had reasonable French on arrival but she needed intensive language training.  They run the local cabinet and are very successful.  I have heard nothing but positive feedback from locals and other Brits.

It could work for you as it has done for this couple.  I will PM you their contact details should you wigh to contact them.

  2. There are various ways of signing off letters, which always seem to me to be very long winded.  For example:

Je vous prie d'agréer, monsieur, l'expression de mes sentiments les meilleurs (the = of yours sincerely)

I wouldn't though recommend signing off 'Bises' or 'bien affectueusement' if you're writing to the Maire!

EDIT: great link Claire - thanks

  3. [quote user="pcwhizz"]Have you seen the price of these things - 10,000 € +   Incredible, you can buy a proper car for less.

An acquaintance lost her licence last year due to drink driving,  she couldn't understand why, she'd only had a couple of glasses of Champagne, wine with her meal and a digestive after.  She bought a sans permis in a deal that the garage bought it back from her when her licence was reinstated.

  4. Squidge, if you can tell us where you are in France (or preferably put it on your profile) someone may be able to recommend a good baby goods shop.

I wouldn't recommend a basket from a market unless it was specifically made as a baby's basket as you wouldn't find a suitable (ie: safe/snug) sized matress, and there may be sharp bits of wicker protruding.

  5. My espresso machine died a few months ago and I replaced it with a Senseo machine.  Previously I had  used the Lavazzo dosettes but I have a few vouchers for the Senseo bags and so have tried a few of their  fairly extensive range - all good.  I will however buy some more Lavazza dosettes, which I am sure are the same size, as I really did  like those.

  6. From the Tempo en savoir plus:

3 couleurs réparties tout au long de l'année
    • 22

jours rouges du 1er novembre au 31 mars du lundi au vendredi (les

samedis, dimanches et jours fériés ne sont jamais rouges et il ne peut

y avoir plus de 5 jours rouges consécutifs),
    • 43 jours blancs répartis tout au long de l'année mais jamais le dimanche,
    • 300 jours bleus tout le reste de l'année (tous les dimanches sont bleus).

  7. Glad it all went well for you Tony.

We had a pre-meeting last night to sort out/discuss commissions and maire/adjoint elections etc. At 10 this morning we have our first Conseil Municipal at which there could be about 100 spectators to watch the vote of the maire (nothing to do with the aperos we're providing after!!).  I'm all apero'd out, every night for the last fortnight, last ones tomorrow morning for the team and their conjoints.

  8. They were on a '6 month holiday'.

The children are 'home schooled' and live an 'alternative' liftestyle.

What struck me on seeing footage of the mother and some of the girl's sisters was how 'normal' they seemed emotionally.  They didn't seem to be too upset considering what happened.  Almost as though "oh well, I've got 6 spare ones"

  9. It depends on how your commune manages its finances.  For example our commune, during it's last mandat, has done nine major projects

in the village for which it received large %'s of subventions and only

once did it actually raise its local taxes by 1%.  If the Maire manages

the loans and repayments well then you wouldn't necessarily have a rise

in your taxes and therefore be directly 'paying' for the work for which

you won't benefit from.  Our commune (of @1000) has debts of just under

half a million with annual repayments of about €60k which is way below

the average for the region and dept for this sized town - a point which

the opposition tried to play on during the campaign and failed

miserably as we were elected yesterday on the 1st round.

We're in the same position as you re the mains drainage, 400m and uphill out of the village!
  10. Well, it's 2.45am and I've just got back home from the count!

The count started at 6.30 and finished at 11.30!! There were about 650 bulletins (15 names each) of the 770ish eligible voters and many of them were panachages listes, each and every name had to be read out and counted from each bulletin.

When the final result came in it was an unprecendeted landslide win for my liste, complete, thrashed the opposing list, never happened before - it has always gone to a second round.  We could see as the count was being done how it was going by looking over the shoulders of the scrutineers and we were on tenterhooks all evening. The Canton office kept phonng to see if we were finished but it went on for ages.

Our 7.30 aperos went by the by (re-scheduled for next sunday morning!!) and we eventually got to our 9pm bar meal at midnight thirty!

Anyway I and my fellow colistiers are now officially the new Conseil Municipal, the opposition went away with their tails between their legs! I am sooo glad it isn't going to a second round.

I'm a bit sloshed BTW -  LOTS of champagne [:-))][:D]

Better get to bed - it's la rentrée tomorrow and I've got to get the kids to school [:$]
