  1. Hi Sid,

Yes I did have to have a medical because I had  mini bus and 7.5ton on my license as it was issued pre 97.  Whether I can remove it I don't know, I didn't try to be honest because it didn't occur to me it would be a problem,  According to the Doc, if I had started proceedings in Dec and not Jan, I wouldn't have had to do it, but as has already been said, it looks like it may be with all the new changes this yr.  He also said I would probably get a temporary paper license which will have to be changed next yr for the new card with finger print.  I will look into it further once I have my license and see if it can be removed before the next obligatory medical in 5yrs!

  2. Hi all, thought I would share this. neeeded to exchange my license from UK to French as photo card runs out soon. Anyway, long and short is, sent in documents via sous prefecture,  all checked (no proof mind lol) photo copies kept, the waited four weeks.  Received in the post this week all documents/application for etc and a covering letter instructing a medical is required for heavy goods!  Rang DVLA and they said due to automatic allcoation of hgv/mini bus permit for licenses pre '97!  Had the medical and I should get my license in due course.  The doc said the legislation keeps changing and had I applied in Dec, I wouldn't have had to have a medical! Anyway, thought I would share my tale as if anyone else has the same entitlements, you may be asked the same (which is weird for someone who goes no where need lorries!!!)  I shall now await the arrival of  my new permit conduire, which hopefully won't be too long.
  3. Hi, didn't know where to post this, so put it here!  Does anyone know if there is a book charity or charity that could use some books in the Charente Maritime area? I have around 80 books to donate, any help greatly appreciated, many thanks
  4. Hi everyone, hope someone can help! Didn't know where to ask this, so put it here.  Has anyone out there got or had a citroen zx estate car '96 and managed to get a tow bar fitted by themselves, please (not dealer)?  I have looked all over mine and can't see where to attach the bar as no bolts on underside of car.  All handbook says is take it to citroen dealer for a towbar.  Many thanks in advance for any help,

    Jimmy

  5. Hi

Not sure if ok to post, but here goes!

I am looking for an upholsterer to rejuvenate my sofa in the Charente Maritime region, pref Saintes/Jonzac/Royan trangle.  Does anyone know of one or recommend one, French or English it doesn't matter! Many thanks in advance

  6. Many thanks Kelly, I will be going to our local shop to look at options as I want to check out the system that uses satelite for receiving internet and TNT etc  for a better connection speed.  I will post here when we have decided which option, but like you were, I am paying for my FT line which I need as all my business info etc is on that number and then pay extra for internet (40e) with free calls to UK , so will be looking for a good deal!!!!

    Thanks again

  7. Hi MisterC

Try contacting the Conseil Genral in LA Rochelle, they will put you through to the tourism dept, who will give you more info.  They have recently  completed my re classification in Charente Maritme.  PM me if you want their contact details etc.  I found the cost had risen considerably for the new classification and it is a lot tougher.  For example, our original cost for 3 gites in 2009 was 145e, which included advertising on their site, this yr, it was over 600e for 4 gites!!! The new plaque is nice though lol!

  8. Hi everyone.

Looking for some advice/help regarding pool testers.  I currently have the Palin cool pool tester and I am looking at upgrading to the Pooltester 3 model as it seems to suit my needs.  Does anyone out there currently use this model of tester and if so would you recommend it, what are the pros and cons etc.  Also, is there anywhere can I buy one from besides the internet (have seen it advertised at 190e in France and £316 in UK!)?  Being old fashioned, I prefer to buy from a shop where I can go and have a good look at the product, but if is only internet, then any recommended sites please.  I am in the Charente Maritime for shop recommendations, any advice greatly received, many thanks in advance

  9. Many thanks Theiere and Steve.   The pool is now crystal clear and went through the stage of turning a bluey grey after a day or so, its just the chlorine level seems very very low.  Do I add javel ,,if so how much would say for 75m3 (never used javel before) or shall I leave it for another week?  It has been sitting at 0.1 since around last weds.  Also, where can I get a proper tester for the cya please, many thanks in advance

  10. Hi everyone, hope someone can help.

Having read the previous thread on chlorine questions, I am wondering if the mention of water temperature affecting the chlore could be my problem.  I will explain!   I usually 'actively winterise' the pool but due to unforseen circumstances, I was unable to do so this winter.  So the long and short is when I took the cover off at the beginning of Feb, it was a very lovely shade of green (1st time for algae in our pool!)  I went to the pool shop and they gave me a product (clairtop) to put in to kill off the alage.  I was also advised to remove a third of the water and replace with fresh water if the cya was high.  They also said the product would mask any readings for approx 2wks but to commence normal treatments after four days.  So this is what I did, put in the product, waited a couple of days then vaccumed and backwashed like a mad woman possessed for a week or more!  The pump was running continuosly for well over a week.  After few days I changed a thrid of the water as the cya was high, started with the multi function galets and  also changed the sand as that was due anyway.  The Ph remained at 7.4 throughout the whole process. After 2wks had passed, there was still no reading for chlore, the cya had come down to within normal parameters and the ph remained the same.  After a few more days of no chlore reading but all others seemed to be fine, I chucked in some chlore choc, still no reading.  I then changed the galets to chlore disinfection thinking that maybe with all the water changes and refills from backwashing etc could be the reason for very little chlorine.  I then got a chlorine reading of a heady 0.1!!  This has remained the same for the last 10days.  The Ph went up over the weekend from 7.4 to 7.5 then 7.6 yesterday, so I have reduced that back down to 7.4.  I have an electronic tester for chlorine and PH but using strips for CYA,  the pool is 75m3 and today the results are ph 7.4 chlorine 0.1 and the cya and alkalinity are well within the normal parameters on the strips (in fact the cya is getting better with each refill!)

So my question is, could it be the water temperature that is too low at 12degs that is affecting the chlorine release?  I don't want to go putting in more chlore choc etc if there isn't a problem or if there is, what next!  Any advice would be greatfully received, many thanks in advance.

  11. Hi everyone, sorry if this has been covered but I have done a search and not found the  answer (even googled!!)  I am thinking of changing my filter medium from sand to glass, but I have been unable to find the product name in French, (aside from verre) so I can have a shop round for prices etc.  Any help greatly received, many thanks

  12. Hi everyone

Apologies if this has been covered before, and I feel in my bones it is possibly a stupid question.  But ask it I must!  I am considering buying a 3D TV in the UK (cheaper than here) and know that to have the best viewing experience (3D), I would need to download the films to watch as I don't have pay to view sky in France.  My question is, if my IP address is in France, are their any restrictions on downlads to either pc or Playstation (thinking of getting one just for downloads) regarding english language etc.  Many thanks in advance for any advice

  13. Hi f1steveuk

Many thanks for your reply.  They told me pretty much the same and if I booked alternative providers, I could claim a refund for the return which won't be used, but as it is in Euro, will have to contact the French helpline. I figured they wouldn't be sailing so booked the train instead!  Thanks again
