  1. I was reading that cats are being dumped by their owners, in the South West of France, the owners being worried about cats bringing bird flu home.  The rescue shelter says they normally pick up 10 cats per week, this hase gone up to 50 a week.  Llike, ok, let's get real.  Keep the cats indoors, don't abandon them.
  2. Just in case anyone receives an accommodation request, as below, it is a scam.  Just thought I would let folks know.

  3. The 10 ltr tins from Auchan, their own make, is about one of the best white emulsion paints.  They do their own white wood paint, great for doors and windows, inside and out, would recommend both. We, like most folks, have tried just about everything.  The cheapy ones at 7 euros for 5 litres are like painting with diluted skimmed milk, some of the very expensive ones are not a deal better and need more coats than a nordic skier.  L'Eclerc do a nice range of chalk effect paints, but, we are not planning for a bank loan to buy paint at the moment.[:|]
  4. Moi aussi, a plate of blood swimming round the veggies is not a personal choice..........[+o(]

As for T, it seems a popular thing in French houses, to pop one Lipton T bag in a large pan, with several pints of water, heat it a while, but not quite to boiling, then serve it with half a cup of milk added.........Several of our friends and neighbours have all prepared T is this way, you soon learn to say "un cafe svp".  One French friend even said " I wish I knew how to make T" as she floated the  T bag in a huge pan of warm water.........  we duly had a T making session.  [C]

  5. We tried neuf telecom, on dial up admittedly,  it was terribly unstable so we abandoned it after one month, maybe things have improved with broadband.  Tiscali or ALICE as it is now, seem ok, if you don't mind them not answering your letters or cutting you off after talking to them for a few minutes when you have need to call them.  The don't take any payments either at the moment, for some unknown reason, so that's a plus [:)]
  6. Hi Adrian

Beta Interferon is readily available in France.  Depending on the allowance, ie Incapacity Benefits, that would be transferable to a French bank account.  I don't know if other benefits are transferable, you would have to check with Newcastle on that matter.  I would assume that your wife would receive an E121 form for reciprocal health care in France.  Her illness would certainly be covered 100% by the CPAM, following registration with a French GP who would complete the necessary forms.  This would cover medicines etc for that particular illness.  I am not sure about Motability, or its equivalent, here in France, but your wife could certainly apply for an invalidity card.

  7. They sound just like the ones that used to sit on the pegs on the washing line.  They made me jump and were off like lightning, they didn't do any harm, save jangling my nerves while wrestling with sheets and towels.[:O]  Can't think of any reason to give them a wide berth.
  8. Well said condi, it is supposed to be a forum, but often turns into a row, for whatever reason.  Glad I moved from the all singing and dancing ****Lot****, to the equally beautiful  Lot et Garonne, saving msyelf from looking down onto the omnipotent peoples of the valley.  Each to their own place of residence, be it a chateau, or a flat looking out over a builders yard.  Every region or department has its fans and there is beauty round every corner, for those that choose to see it.  This thread has already turned sour over peoples partnerships,  hopefully it won't go any further with "our place is better than your place". It is just interesting to see where people have chosen to settle and why.
  9. No, the RMI is not indefinate, it is reviewed every three months and is dependent on income.  A lot of the necessary forms regarding invalidity, pensions, supplementary pension payments etc. are available online, from the CPAM as I am sure you are aware.  As for "how does it all work"........ far be it from little ol' me to answer that question
  10. If you are fiscally resident in France, then you can apply for RMI revenue minimum d'insertion, similar to income support, if you are on low or no income, also CMU to cover the shortfall in medical charges.  If you are disabled then it is likely that your medical charges will be covered 100%, for specific illness's.

Obtaining a parking badge for the car is a long drawn out process of forms and medical reports, speaking from personal experience.

  11. Maple flavoured syrup in porridge.mmmmmmmmmmmmm.  Brive, quite a treck, sadly.  Seems Intermarche and a couple of others have cornered the market in having a bit of an English shoppy, despite outrageous prices, I am strangely drawn to Hellmanns and Bicks sweetcorn relish every time I see them.  Need to keep an eye on the sell by dates, one jar of relish was out of date way back in early 2005.
  12. CPAM said we needed the carte european for a uk visit and the French equivalent of the E111 for anyone who is business registered, both duly sent out very quickly.  The lady at the MPSAQ said that business owners would get the european card as well, instead of the E111 form,  as soon as they have linked into the CPAM system.
  13. Apparently they can live for months, off the host, just waiting, lurking for heat and movement..............Similar to fleas, they can lay dormant between floorboards etc, in empty houses, waiting for new activity, we had that treat when we moved into our house recently.  Our house puss cats had never ever had such things, most disconcerting, more spray and frontline has been used than you can shake a stick at.........The vets said to frontline every two weeks when the weather is hot, once a month is not enough.  Frontline only lasts two weeks against ticks anyway, supposed to last 4 against fleas.  Not sure if that was a ploy to get us to buy more...........I was in there every two weeks, regardless, hopefully all sorted now.  Ticks are certainly large when they are gorged on blood, used to get them on us when walking in Scotland.  Off to have another shower now..........no more talk of crawly hoppy bugglies [:#]
  14. Regrets?  No.  Difficult times, yes, not so much with mountains of paperwork, but financial ups and downs and trying to survive.  People thinking it is a cheap place to live are mistaken, it is on a par with the UK.  Locals have been great, supportive, helpful, offering sound advice, love the climate ( a tad chilly at prsent) love the people, health care has been superb,  and the pace of life around here is most acceptable.  While we can eat, keep warm, have a roof over our heads,  have no mortgage and bills get paid eventually, then we are happy.
