If you buy a standard UHF aerial AND a terrestrial digital (TNT) box, then you will have access to about 15 French channels, and this will work with your english TV via a SCART connector.
This of course assumes that you can pick up the TNT transmission where you are.

Yes all is revealed, thanks Christine, it was indeed s'en aller. A virtual tipple for you.
I did admit to getting a little help, but I did not admit to posting the question across the internet!

Well the latest thing is Laser TV ehich will make all the other systems obsolete in time. They are very much better according to those who have seen the demos.

Brico Depot usually have one of their range of isolation products on a special offer. The ones with many layers also contain layers of woll which will have some accoustic effect. They are claimed to have the same thermal insulation as 200mm of rock wool.
Also, given that they are bulky, whay would anyone want to take that sort of thing from England when a bettter and cheaper item is available locally in France?

I often use Moneybookers but it does take some time, and you have to do at least some of it manually, online. You transfer from your bank to Moneybookers which you can set up as automatic, but when the money arrives, they send an email. Then you have to withdraw that money to your french account.
I also use HSBC, where I have my normal UK account. For transfers of less than £2k they charge £9.00, the last one I did in the branch at about 11.30 am on a monday, and got a letter from my french bank later in the week to say that my account had been credited, and the letter was dated that same Monday. So the money took just a few hours to get there. And french banks are normally closed on Mondays.
Is this a record?

I use a different route now through Rouen, which I think is quicker, and it is certainly shorter.
Look at www.mappy.co.uk (or www.mappy.fr) and search for Rouen. You proceed south on the A28 which goes under the city, then comes out onto the bridge over the Seine. On this bridge, keep to the LH lane or you will be shunted off. Just keep straight ahead following this road which does a large S towards le Petite Quevilly where it becomes a dual carriageway the N338. There is actually an underpass for the set of lights where it crosses the N138 out of Rouen, just get into the LH lane again. This road then joins the N138 further south, and eventually joins the A13 west. Then on to the A28 south towards Le Mans etc.
The return trip is the reverse (as all the Haynes manuals say), Take the Rouen Ouest turn from tha A13 (J 23) then follow the N338 up to Rouen. Just after the first roundabout keep to LH lane for the underpass, then go straight on, and you get to the bridge, again you will need the LH lane here as otherwise you get shunted off again. Over the bridge and then on to the A28 and the tunnel.
Of course, if you are trying to use the N28 south of rouen you might have a problem finding it on your 10 year old map.
There can be a little traffic on that bit south of the bridge, but it is only for about a mile. Note the radar marked on the mappy maps. The signposted route takes you via J22 of the A13, which is further and slower. -
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. My next lesson is this evening, so I should find out then.
Late news, some new pupils who had missed the last couple of weeks came today and were also given the crossword, so the answers were not forthcoming. Have to wait another week. Sorry.

If you plan a route with Mappy.fr or Viamichelin, you get the positions of all the fixed radars you pass thrown in. Free.

I am doing a french level three course at the moment. Our tutor has given us a crossword puzzle to complete, which is to help us with the passe compose and verbs which take etre.
I am stuck on one, so perhaps someone here can help.
English clue - to go away, 8 letters --n-----. I am faily sure that the n is correct.
A virtual tipple to the winner.

My experience too, the crew on the sardinia were generally very poor in English. Certainly not A level standard.
However, I also doubt if A level standard really was a prerequisite of the jobs on the new boat either. Why would the french stipulate A level, when they don't know what it is?
More likely it's a journalist's interpretation of what he thought he heard someone say. However, on a ship where safety is all important, if orders are given in French, then the crew must be able to understand them. (Though how so many freight shipping companies manage with their chinese crews in this I really don't know).
Mind you, I speak french to O level standard, I have the (very old) piece of paper to prove it, not that it does me any good at all.

I would tend to agree with you on that, though I do have a printed receipt from them for the original amount. This would certainly fall foul of British consumer legislation.
It is interesting to know that if I had booked in euros, I would have paid a slightly higher price.
Not going to complain really, as it is still a cheap way to get across that bit of channel and the times are actually convenient.
They are also quite generous on their three day return, travel out 0800 Friday, return 1800 Monday, which is over what most of the short hops class as three days. They normally require you to begin the return journey no more than 72 hours after arriving.
For goodness sake, don't tell them!

Yes I am sure I was on the Transmanche site. I did check the Aferries booking but they would only give a provisional booking, and said they would automatically put you on an alternative ferry, which I did not want.
No, it was not a booking charge, the card statement said €65 @ 1.44 = £45.50 (not giving eXACT figures cos I have not got them in front of me), but the card receipt I printed from their website clearly states the cost to be £44.00
-
I booked a return Newhaven - Dieppe, and the cost shown was £44.00. However, when it got back to my credit card account, it was £45.50. Seems they change the sterling into euros then back to sterling.
Why do they advertise prices in sterling if they then do this?
This is booking on their website by the way. Anyone else had this?

I would have thought that a solar hot water system would actually save more than the 1Kw that this wind turbine produces, and thay actually do work.
Add to that replacing all your lamp bulbs with low energy type, and you didn't need the wind turbine anyway. But buy them in the Uk 'cos thay are much cheaper there.

I must admit
Mon doofer est le canard Donald just doesn't quite have the same ring to it.[:)]

I have Churchill insurance, and they told me there was a 90 day limit.

The other thing you can do is add some ordinary vegetable oil to the mix. A couple of litres should suffice. This has a higher viscosity and excellent lubrication properties, and will help offset the dilution by the petrol.

"Either the burners have still got the town gas injectors in them, or (more likely) you have a bottle of butane running through a propane regulator. "
I thought that the bottles had different screw fittings so that propane and butane could not be mixed. (Propane female, butane male).

Alis announced the opening of a second service station at Chaumont (Aire du Haras) mid-July. Petrol, shop, sandwiches, drinks, hot food.
This was open when we came back on 23rd July.

That will depend on the video output card you have on the PC, and possibly the software drivers.

But remember that you do have to have all the work done by a registered artisan too, so if you are into DIY, you must work out if the additional cost of installation is cost effective.
This tax break also applies to installing an enclosed wood burning stove in place of an open fire.

That sounds good with a cabin.
Did they have any comments about the way the bikes were loaded/tied down on the boat?

Read elsewhere of someone who checked a fare on the Aferry site - £166, then rang Transmanche and asked about the same details, and was charged £133.
Aferry add in small print that the booking is not confirmed, but Transmanche booking direct do confirm the booking.
The only problem I have had with Transmanche is their billing system. They quote in ££, and charge in ££, but then convert to €€, and your card issuer then converts this back to ££, so what you see is not what you pay.
Admittedly that was last year, they might have sorted it out by now.
-
Mine has worked perfectly, but the billing system hasn't.
I have been charged twice for a trip from Rouen to Alencon on the A28 on 14 April. I gather that this is not uncommon with this new bit of autoroute, so check your bills.
Eurotunnel good for cheap day-trips!

You might be able to get a day return for £44, but don't ever try to go just one way, as we had to last Monday when the wind stopped Transmanche from sailing, and Sea France were on strike. P&O didn't know which way up they were either.
Eurotunnel only wanted £161 for the single trip, at 10.00 in the evening. Talk about profiteering!
