  1. ...and John Lewis sell them...

Not many 'in's and outs' to research though - it's essentially a book reader with a few great free add-ons (internet access, mp3 player etc) - pretty straightforward and cheap.

    Simon :-)
  2. [quote user="Jay"]I suppose the thing to do then is buy your books elswhere. I presume you can upload from your computer via a USB lead? There are also places where you can buy/get free books sent straight to you Kindle no matter where you live. I like SciFi and use THIS site. Click on any of the titles for a description. If you want it click on send to my Kindle. Of course you will not get the full colour front cover to books or the pictures in downloadable magazines.

Jay - words of wisdom at last! Although I've never had a problem with my UK registered Kindle - I don't solely download books from Amazon. As you correctly state - it comes with a USB connector.

Strewth - never seen so many knickers in a twist - back on boxing day I only wanted to share my view of this great and practical 'toy'. 300 posts and nearly 11,000 views later I'm not so sure it was a good idea !

    Simon :-)

...on second thoughts it was a GREAT idea!!!! :-)

....heck, you don't think I'll be sent to the Bastille do you for 'cheating' the Kindle system ? Never been.....

  3. How complicated, and expensive some peoples lives are !

Take a look at this text from the 'Manage My Kindle' page on my Amazon account:

    Your Country

If you're moving, you can change the country associated with your Kindle account.

    Current country

    United Kingdom

    Edit

Simple - just change it. If you gave your Kindle to someone in another country they'd do the same thing.

There are millions of people all over Europe who order their Kindle from the UK and use it in Europe (including France!) and Worldwide - without any problems. I fly all over the place and have never had a problem.

Why on earth anyone would order their Kindle from the US when they can get it across the Channel I've no idea......

    Simon :-)

  4. Only trying to help JK , no need to be so touchy!

Quite obviously you DON'T know how it works because you'd know that there's no need to 'CHOOSE' a delivery method - the Kindle does that for you based on the strongest available signal (so sorry to repeat myself!).

Does it really matter how the e-books are delivered so long as you get them? THERE IS NO CHAGRE FOR DELIVERY - GLOBALLY - no matter where you order them from...although I suspect they all come from the same Amazon server anyway.

I would add that you do pay a small fee, no matter where you live, if you want to send documents to your Kindle via their Whispernet.

Boring stuff JK - just relax and enjoy it

    Simon :-)
  5. JK - The Kindle automatically connects to the strongest signal be it Wifi (fastest), 3G or GPRS (slowest). You just need to make sure it's enabled on your Kindle.

All books etc are delivered instantly once purchased via the Amazon 'Global' Whispernet - no delivery charge!

By the way - absolutely no problems whatsoever using my .co.uk ordered Kindle in France.

    Simon :-)
  6. pachapapa - How arrogant, condescending, pompous and patronising can one guy be? Ridiculous !!

Personally I couldn't give a stuff if 200 Borders Stores close down and neither will the book authors - they get their royalties whatever and I get my e-books.

How I love to embrace change and move with the times......

    Simon :-)
  7. woolybana and Russethouse - I'm afraid that when you post on a Forum you're not privy to the life history of fellow contributors - nor should you be.

I'm simply expressing my opinion - just like idun is.

I appreciate there are many reasons why people choose go back to the UK - often very personal and sometimes incredibly sad. Personally I can't imagine ever living in the UK again so that's what drives my posts on this subject. But hey - never say never - I'm not that stupid. I genuinely feel sorry for idun - does her no good but that's how I feel.

I don't feel the need to 'validate' my posts based on my experiences, length of time as a member, age, nationality or circumstances - I'm simply contributing to an open Forum - that's the whole point.

I don't know you and you don't know me. Would you like to hear my life history? I doubt it!

I won't post any more on this subject and consider myself 'told-off' and to be honest, slightly bullied for not conforming.

    Knowledge is power heh?

    Simon :-)

  8. Sweeping ??? Hang on a minute Cendrillon - lets just look at what idun actually said......

    > too hot - for 27 years!

    > didn't like living in a village

    > village life was 'dull'

    > mind numbingly boring

    > had to drive somewhere for 'life'

    > only Brits in the Village

I feel SORRY for idun being so discontented for so long. Dedication beyond the call I'd say!

Still using the Complete France forums though and joined up after leaving France....interesting......

    Simon :-) (not retired)
  9. idun - wow, who are you trying to convince? It sounds like you had an awful time - hope it wasn't entirely wasted! Can't quite understand why you stuck it out so long ....one life and all that.

Needless to say - that's not been my experience at all and what's more - I can't wait for those warm Summers evenings - something about the way the sunshine and warmth makes you feel. Certainly makes me walk with a spring in my step :-)

Looks like another clear blue day ahead here in the Pyrenees, 17 degrees later on - great! Means I can spend most of the day outdoors...

Oh and by the way - going back is ALWAYS a backwards move......

    Simon :-)
  10. Shoop - log on to your HSBC account, select the account you want to transfer from, select 'send money overseas' (on the left menu) and follow the instructions. You'll need a CA account RIB.

The bank exchange rates won't be nearly as good as some of the currency brokers - that's how they build in their fees. But - it;s very straight forward - much less hassle than drawing cash from a dispenser and paying it in!! Can't believe anyone does that :-) Must cost a fortune in time, fuel and cash withdrawl fees / poor rates.

My CA don't charge for the receipt of funds and my HSBC account doesn't make a charge for the transfer - hidden in the exchange rate no doubt!

    Good luck / Simon :-)

  11. just john - the answer to your question is well documented in this post - admittedly probably a bit hard to find now - so here goes.....no secret !

    1. Set up an Amazon.co.uk account

    2. You don't have to set up a 'home' address but, if you want to, use a UK one as the 1st one in your list - e.g. the delivery address as per step 3

    3. Order your Kindle from Amazon.co.uk for delivery to a UK address. Doesn't matter how you pay - they'll take anything from anywhere!

    4. Once you get your Kindle - you need to register it on-line with Amazon.co.uk under the 'Manage My Kindle' part of your account.

    5. It should already be assigned to Amazon.co.uk but, if it's assigned to Amazon.com - change your home country to the UK under 'Manage My Kindle'. All will become clear when you start the registration process.

OR...just get a friend, family member in the UK to do it all for you with their UK account and send it to you as a pressie!!

    Job done!

    Good luck / Simon :-)
  12. krusty - some people just prefer grey and wet back in the UK! I'd much rather have defined seasons i.e. very cold Winter, Mild Spring and Autumn and baking hot Summer - gorgeous. That's the Pyrenees for you! Used to live in the Thames Valley - dull, dull, dull.....

Not sure if many people actually move to France solely for the climate though - if they do then they need a reality check.

Beautiful blue day today (has been for the last 7), frosty morning, expecting 17/18 degrees later, not a cloud in the sky - how's it with you in Cyprus?

    Simon :-)
