1. Not exactly relevant to the topic but....

One of the things that used to make me smile, specifically on Nice flights, was the disproportionate amount of guys wearing Chinos, navy blazers and panama hats - accompanied by the glam girls who'd had their hair done for the journey - from London!

Are they still around today ?

    Simon :-)

  2. Wow - second that - get rid of Norton ! Has screwed up every PC / Laptop I've had!

If you're using an up-to-date version of Internet Explorer as your browser - make sure you're viewing the Forum in 'Compatibility View' (tab by the input bar). The Complete France site was obviously designed for older version browsers! The only way I can edit or quote posts, without loads of mess on the screen, is to use compatibility view.....

  3. Tell me about it nomoss!!

My Uncle turned up with Moinka from Warsaw who 'needed' to spend a lot of time at McDonalds using the free Wifi service for her on-line business???! Never asked her what exactly it was!

Uncle mid 60's, short and rotund - Monika, mid 30's tall, blond and Amazonian.

    Could write a book !

    Simon :-)

  4. wooly - 'jobs to do' ! you've got to be kidding....they're on 'holiday' - they may break a nail if they lift a finger!

The comments that make me laugh are:

    > we'll eat anything....(not!)

    > what are we doing today ?

    > where are we going for lunch / dinner ?

    > what's for lunch / dinner ?

    > do they speak English ?

    > sentences normally starting with 'we usually like....'

    > can you drink the water ? (in the Pyrenees!!)

    > have you got a local Chinese / Indian restaurant ?

    I do love them though!!!

    Simon :-)

  5. It's that time of year.......you know, when your influx of 'visitors' begins, be they friends or family.

That time of year.... when you're expected to put your own life on hold and transform yourself into a tour operator and hotelier.....sound familiar?

    They're on holiday.......

'They' like to 'choose' the food they eat and the drinks they drink - in YOUR home.

'They' like to be entertained and chauffeured around every day - at YOUR expense.

'They' embarrass you at local fêtes and make you cringe at local restaurants.

You thought you knew them well but, apparently you don't!.......

    Summer has started - wonderful!

    Simon :-)

  6.
Simon,

If you think that's rude, you ain' t been on this forum long enough!

Yes, I realise now that I  missed reading the form correctly - and I did know you were supposed to send them, I just forgot - and it would

    be easier if the for

m wasn't (a) in blue and pale at that, and (b) in such small print.

I see now that there is indeed an email on the form, thank you EmilyA, that is the most sensible suggestion I've had so far .....and means I can contact them before the deadline .....

I begin to wish I hadn't asked the question .....
Never mind Judith i'm sure you'll get the hang of it - eventually. Tip for you - R T F M !
Hi Judith

I checked with the accountant, we compiled a list with account nos and name of bank and added it to our form 2042
Absolutely right Judith - you can attach a list with the details if you prefer.

Look - it's all pretty straightforward - 2 little boxes on page 4 (bottom) of your tax return:

    Contrats d’assurance-vie conclus à l’étranger joignez la liste des contrats . . . . . . . . . . . . 8TT COCHEZ

    Comptes bancaires à l’étranger?joignez la déclaration n° 3916 ou la liste des comptes sur papier libre . . . . . . 8UU COCHEZ

    Simon :-)
As I said already, the form was delivered BEFORE I read this email, so telling me to cochez at 8TT etc after the event is a little pointless.
Crikey Judith - remind me never to give you any help or advice in the future - how rude!!

I simply copied and pasted the relevant sections of page 4 of the 2042 return - for anyone's benefit.

Whether or not you'd already 'delivered' your forms doesn't concern me in the slightest - couldn't care less.

Hey, do what ever you like it's no big deal and pretty easy to understand. Sounds like you might need to start saving though.......

    Bye bye

    Simon :-)

    Hi Simon

I understand having to declare non French bank accounts, but not sure what you mean about declaring Assurance Vie contracts.  How and where should they be delcared?
Bottom of page 4 of your 2042, box 8TT and attach / input details of the contract as per your annual attestation from your AV provider.

The fines for not doing this are pretty hefty ranging from 1,500 € up to 10,000 € depending on where the account/s are located (i.e. fiscal agreement with France or not) and they are multiplied by the number of years of non declaration!
Neat bit of scare mongering there Simon.
Scare mongering ? Nope - just honest advice / facts - completely up to you what you do. No warning letters by the way - you just get the bill / fine.

    Only trying to help......blimey!

    Simon :-)

  11.
Oh dear - I've just handed in the forms today, and I forgot to do the foreign bank account details (I did them last year and they haven't changed.)

    Should I worry?

What would you advise me to do now?
Well Judith - should you worry? Depends on whether or not you want to risk the fines......

You need to declare accounts that have been opened, closed or used.

Here's a link to form 3916 (sections 1 and 4 are normally sufficient for accounts in the EU) - fill in and hand in would be my advice!!

    http://www.impots.gouv.fr/portal/deploiement/p1/fichedescriptiveformulaire_6896/fichedescriptiveformulaire_6896.pdf

    Simon :-)

  12. Yes of course there are forms to complete re C G T - this is france after all! You'll will need to appoint a fiscal representative if your sale price exceeds 150,000 € - they will ensure all the correct docs are completed and charge you around 1% of the sale price for their services. You really must speak to your notaire who will advise you about the process. Believe me - it's fully 'automatic'!

If you're a UK resident you'll also have a liability there.

    Simon :-)

  13. Yep - coops is completely correct - you need to declare all non French accounts opened, closed or used during the tax year in question. Use form/s 3916 on-line or the paper version.

The fines for not doing this are pretty hefty ranging from 1,500 € up to 10,000 € depending on where the account/s are located (i.e. fiscal agreement with France or not) and they are multiplied by the number of years of non declaration!

By the way - same goes for Assurance Vie contracts taken out.

    Simon :-)

  14. Come on...let's get a grip. If Frenchie doesn't want to play any more then leave her be! Its' a personal choice thing.

I should probably attempt to 'validate' my next comments by giving a list of qualifying criteria before opening my mouth....but I'm not going to. After all - this is just an on-line forum - take it or leave it.

2 things I feel about the French psychi. 1. the expectation to conform and 2. the almost irreverent approach to 'authority'.

On point 1, from the very outset, the French education system demands conformity. Most easily (and quickly!) demonstrated by the lack of 'please discuss' sessions at school. Most things are not open for discussion, they are simply doled out and learnt 'parrot' fashion. What one 'thinks' about the information shared is pretty irrelevant. Things may have, or may be, changing but I wouldn't know - long time since I was at school! Day-to-day language is littered with: c'est obligatoire, il faut, vous devez, c'est normale, ce n'est pas normale, etc etc, etc. There is a certain pressure to 'always' do things in a certain way and, if you don't, you're stuffed! Or, you almost always have to start again! Then we have...

Point 2 - Authority - precious, elite, untouchable, demi-gods, we are not worthy...words and phrases that spring to mind

So - when someone IN AUTHORITY doesn't CONFORM it's almost unthinkable.

Not sure that helps but I feel much better!

    Simon :-)

  15. Tia - do remember about your UK CGT liability for the French sale (as BJSLIV states above).

Believe me - the French authorties pass all the sale info to HMRC!. So - this means your total liability could be either 18% or 28% of the gain (above £10,600) depending on your overall income tax liability / rate.

Therefore as a UK resident, any amount you pay to France is simply deducted from your overall UK bill but the total amount due stays the exactly the same! The French CGT due is automatically witheld from the sale proceeds by your notaire.

Chancer, I saw the same program as you, the survey was conducted on 1000 French people , all ages, men or women.

I must admit I agree with them .

Like Christine, this is not shocking for me, and I will explain why.

    1. People in France think it is trop gros to be true...  Indeed, isn't it bizarre that the man who was very likely to become the next President gets such an accusation just before he runs for the Primaires socialistes... ?

    2. I rhink of that woman too, and yes, it is a good thing that she's protected!!

    3. ANd added he thought of his wife he adores and kids and family.

    4. JUST facts, I am not having any comments on this.
Hi Frenchie - interesting......I've picked out 4 of the points you made and comment / question as follows on each point:

    1. Are you implying he could not possibly be guilty of the charges against him becasue he was running for the Presidency?

    2. Please clarify this comment. c-a-d?

    3. So - as a 'family' man he couldn't possibly be guilty?

    4. Are you kidding ?!

    Simon :-)

  17. Wow - just managed to catch up on this post....

For goodness sake - what about the poor room maid? I just hope she has the support, courage and protection to take this low life down!

The poor woman quite obviously does have a real and understandable view of what is and is not acceptable 'human' behaviour - no matter where you come from!
Spot on Clair ! It's like saying that you are 2 different people - one at work, one at home - total rubbish! It's the same bloke! Simon :-)
I didn't say what you think is total rubbish , so please, I'd like you to watch your language, we can express different points of view and yet, respect  people. [:)]
Steady on Frenchie - I was agreeing with Clair! You have misunderstood - maybe lost something in translation!

I was stating that the concept of being one person in your professional life and a completely different one in your private life -  is rubbish. You are the same person no matter what - i.e. I wouldn't want a head of state who plays around in their private life - wouldn't trust him / her - simple as that.

    Simon :-)
