  1. Well Cathy - that's just mad! So - you can buy a Kindle in the UK and then if you even travel abroad you can't download from .co.uk???? There are thousands of people who have bought a Kindle in the UK either at amazon.co.uk or even John Lewis and then use them whilst on holiday or at their second home or even, god forbid, at their permanent home outside the UK!! Amazon will have one heck of an investigation to conduct!! Simon :-)
  2. Cathy - what's going on ? :-) You say you've registered your Kindle to the UK, linked it to a UK address, set up your one-click payment method - you should be absolutely fine to download from amazon.co.uk. It's got absolutely nothing to do with where your PC is! In any case you can download direct to the Kindle from the main menu on the device. You can also set-up 'Kindle for My PC' and amazon will automatically synchronise your PC and Kindle libraries. My Kindle is registered to the UK, with a French one-click payment card - no probs at all. Oh and my PC is here in France with me! Good luck / Simon:-)
  3. Cathy Hi - congratulations! There are 4623 free books - mostly the ones out of copyright (i.e.old!). Just list all Kindle books and sort by price lowest to highest. Your prices are in USD because your Kindle is assigned to Amazon.com in the US. You need to change your country to the UK using the 'Manage my Kindle' section of your account on-line. Have fun / Simon
  4. I'm loosing the will to live reading this post! Get a grip and get the dictionary out guys!! It's not difficult...... See above for the link to send a registered / recorded delivery letter on-line. Simon:-)
  5. Hi Russethouse If you choose the option to download the Kindle book to your PC - you can just send them a copy of the .azw file it creates. Simon :-)
  6. KathyF - you sound just like me before I bought and held a Kindle! :-) You don't have to buy a Kindle Kathy - it's not compulsory! But.....just to clear up a couple of your misconceptions..... 1. It's not technically a 'screen' - it uses electronic e-ink - absolutely no glare, you can read it anywhere you can read a book, you can alter the text size and font - take a look a one! You can even buy a cover with an in-built reading light. 2. You need to get all your friends to buy a Kindle then you can swap hundreds of thousands of books almost instantly! 3. You can flick and browse on Kindle until your heart's content - you turn pages just like a book and can search for anything you like within the publication. You can read reviews and obtain free 'tasters' of any book available in the Kindle store, free trials of daily newspapers and , as already stated thousands of books from non-Amazon sources. 4. The kindle also has it's own feel and smell ! And - sad as it may be - libraries are on their way out in their current form. Go on - be brave...! Simon :-)
  7. Helen - you've answered your own question! The 'Amazon marketing for 3G' is about providing an 'anywhere service' for people WITHOUT Wifi access - lots of us in the Pyrenees! Nothing more sinister than that. This version is more expensive simply because Amazon have had to do a deal with 3G network providers to enable free accessfor Kindle users. It's a book reader - whatever the version and I don't think anyone has even suggested it is an alternative to a computer! Happy reading / Simon :-)
  8. You can send them on-line if you like - here's the link: https://lettreenligne.laposte.fr/lregp/accueil.action Simon :-)
  9. Well Just John let's see...a Kindle is a fraction of the cost, light as a feather, stores thousands of books, charge can last for weeks, uses e-ink so just like reading a book (as already stated - no glare), the 3G version comes with free internet access, an MP3 player and an audio reading facility. Essentially it offers an exceptional, authentic book reading experience with amazing bonus extras...should I go on....? Simon the absolute convert ! :-)
  10. Hi CB65 - don't know is the answer to your question - not tried it, maybe someone else has? I had mine delivered to a UK address using my Amazon.co.uk account details. This account has my own French address and French payment method so - when my Kindle arrived it was automatically registered to the US anyway! I just changed my country back to the UK using the 'Manage my Kindle' facility on my account. This lets me buy from the UK Kindle Shop and pay in GBP. If you're registered to the US Kindle shop you must pay in USD which may, or may not, be a good thing depending on the exchange rate. No option to buy in euros at the moment. I must say that I found both the Kindle and the books to be more expensive from the US. Essentially there are only 2 Kindle Stores - one in the UK and one in the US covering everywhere except the UK. Simon :-)
  11. Derek come on........I bought a new marker pen today :-)
  12. Cathy - you're welcome. Enjoy your Kindle - I love mine when I can get my hands on it! Simon:-)
  13. Cathy A home Wifi connection is fine - the Kindle will automatically pick it up (if it's turned on!). 3G is a fast mobile phone (and data) network. The slower ones are known as Edge and GPRS (the slowest) - but all work with the Kindle 3 (more expensive one). No MP3 player on the basic model I'm afraid. An MP3 player stores music files in an MP3 format - i.e. the ones you can download. So - it means you can listen to music through the Kindle's headphone socket or speakers. Should be fine having it delivered to a UK address. When you get it you just need to register it on-line with Amazon (under 'Manage my Kindle') and assign your country as the UK. That's what I did. You'll obviously need the charger if you don't have access to a USB port on a PC. Simon :-)
  14. Hi Cathy - depends if you normally like reading in the dark! Otherwise it's just like a book. By the way - it sounds from the price as if you're buying the basic WiFi only Kindle - i.e. the one without 3G, internet access, mp3 player etc. That's great if you have a good Wifi signal - just checking you've thought it through.....if you just want a book reader it's perfect (so long as you have that wifi network). Both models of come with a USB cable which acts as a charger when plugged in to your pc. Simon :-)
  15. Loved it ! Got me going through a whole range of emotions - just great. Love Emilia in Merlin as well ! I wish things like that happened in the Pyrenees! Simon :-)
  16. Moulin85 - definitely an old wives tale - dial-up in France is escargot speed - just like everywhere else. Fine for emails (without big attachments) - but browsing is painful. Why don't you just get a pay-as-you-go broadband dongle if you don't want to take out a sub. You can pick up the packs in most of the phone operator stores. Simon :-)
  17. Hi Moulin I picked up a US Robotics USB 56K modem last year. It works just great with a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 64bit. Cost 40€ on Amazon.fr - much the same price in the UK. Simon :-)
  18. Hi cooperlola I have an amazon.co.uk account with a French address and payment card. I ordered the Kindle to be delivered to a friends' UK address but even so it was still registered to the US when it arrived (so I may as well have ordered it to be delivered directly to me in the first place!). No problem though - I just changed the country to the UK in the 'Manage my Kindle' section of my account. You can't do this until you have the Kindle as you need the device serial number stored on the device itself. Happy reading, and surfing, and listening to music........ Simon :-)
  19. ClarkKent - thanks for the lesson on the BAA! PaulT - you STILL don't get my point. Anyway - I'm bored with this now. Game Over - Thanks for Playing Simon :-)
  20. I am BAA, I own and operate LHR - but I can't guarantee the accuracy of the flight information I provide....barking ! Simon :-)
  21. Another - you STILL don't get it do you? I'm talking about the disclaimer on the BAA flight info website (look at my original post) - not the flight info boards! How on earth can the BAA state that their flight information may be 'inaccurate or incomplete' ? Give me strength...... Simon :-)
  22. Pickles - not good enough. BAA own the airport and should therefore be responsible and accountable for the basic information they provide. I use www.flightradar24.com which uses ADS-B. Simon :-)
  23. Please read my original post before going off at a tangent...... Simon :-)
  24. Another - what are you talking about? You are completely missing the point.... I just want them to tell me when a plane has taken off or when it has landed and - guarantee that the info is correct. How on earth can the guys that own and operate the airport absolve themselves of the responsibility of accurate, actual flight information? Let's get a grip shall we.... Simon :-)
  25. andyh4 - you're obviously a frequent flyer and I bow to your global experience. I'm just a mere mortal who worked in the air for BA for 23 years - please excuse my inexperience, I am not worthy..... Simon :-)
