  1. I've made my own doors and went for black wrought-iron thumb latches. Catalogue prices can be steep, but B & Q were doing them in packs for just a few quid each. Made in India IIRC but quite acceptable.

    Hope that helps.

You should try what people in the know do on a boat, come down the stairs backwards. [;-)]

Depends on the boat. Mine was a carrier... I can shin up and down no problem, but quite a number of females have difficulty coming down and consequently return to earth backwards. Often awkward. So SWMBO has issued an edict... Get rid.

  3. We've got used to, and much prefer, wider stairs. The current old staircase needs replacing, and is over a metre wide. I've searched t'internet, but found nothing other than standard widths of about 85cm.

Before I set to and commission a bespoke staircase, does anyone know where wide-tread stairs may be available - say up to a metre wide?

    Cheers. [:)]

  4. A big gap can still lead to cracking as the wood expands/contracts. For small gaps, run down some acrylic sealant with a gun. Acrylic can be painted, but don't use silicone - paint doesn't like sticking.

For bigger gaps, get cheap cans of expanding foam and blow it in - not too much. Leave it a day or more, then pare off with a Stanley knife or fine pad saw. The foam will take a fine skin of filler if needed, but up there probably won't be noticable.

    Easy.

    No, I won't say anything...! [:D]

I don't think French boards are designed to be coated. Not necessary. Do a good job on the joints and you won't see them.

  6. The sticky mesh can be called bande à joint or similar. When you say finish plaster, do you mean for the joints? Normally only the joints are done. If so, something like enduit à joint.

The sheds, Weldoms, Mr Bricolage - all will have what you want.

  7. Go to one of the sheds and you'll find silicon sealant remover. Can't remember the name in French, but it's there. Never tried the stuff myself (bought on the off-chance, but never used), so can't comment on its usefulness.
