  1. I have never found a non iron sheet in France. I have bought all sorts of makes at all prices, some percale ones were marked that they would need less ironing, but they needed a lot.

I've never seen a bigger washing machine or dryer. And if you have to get them from specialist places I can see them being expensive, I find most washing machines/dryers expensive here anyway. I would ask at say Darty and see if they have any bigger ones.

You are right, a normal french school would probably not take him anyway. My hairdressers brother has Down's and the local Maternelle would not take him. He ended up in an institution for mentally handicapped children.

You should phone your local Academie or Inspection, you'll find the numbers under Administration in your yellow pages. You may even find some numbers that deal with handicaps too.

I used to be a volunteer for Mencap and sometimes I wonder where on earth the handicapped people are in France. Well away from 'normal' life and the general public around here at least. Very very occassionally I will see a group of adults in a big supermarket, but where the 'children' are I have no idea.

  3. I sometimes look at ivillage, now that must be the very worst message board on the net, you have to open every single message on there and see them one at a time. It actually used to be worse than it is now.

Now I can't cope with that, and it always amazes me that they get so many people posting over there.

  4. We've been here 23 years now and are moving back in around 17 months now.

I can't say that I see any appeal in moving to the SE though, although I'm sure that you would find work there. I've never lived in the SE, that is one thing that the posters on here have succeeded in doing, putting me off wanting to ever do other than visit the sout east......although we have good friends who live in London...and they are happy living there.

And I think that moving from your part of France to the UK, you won't find that much of a difference with regards to crime, etc etc. Look at all the changes there has been in France in these last 23 years.

As far as I can tell, there are two sorts of France that are mentioned on here. And the majority seem to live in a place I don't know at all.

I know I'll be OK when I go back, and I'm sure you will too.

You certainly need to do something, even with the recent law to protect spouses.

Tontines are not always the best thing though as they are only advantageous for properties under a certain value.

You will need to get the advice of at least one notaire as to what would be the best thing to protect your interests in the event of your husband's death. As his children will be his heritiers and as such entitled to most of his estate, you would only be entitled to about 10% AFAIK.

Donation entre epouse could be something to ask about, and that is probably what would be best for you, but you must discuss this with a notaire. Or you could change your marriage regime, perhaps!? but that would have to be marked on your documentation for your home too. Also, if you die first then it would be the same situation for him, and your family would be your heritiers.
  6. And then we would have trouble with threads that aren't quirky or sort of conversations, on some boards they are in order, and if someone wants to comment on No4 out of 27, making it then No 28, it just looks strange. I've been on boards with both systems, and on here I like this. Seems to fit on here.

I know the none order system isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I like it.
  7. You could try and find a Comptoir Irlandaise, or get a friend to send some.

What would the french use this in, I have never tasted anything that is spiced with this mix here. No wonder that they don't sell it, is it.

And you could do the following. Instead of using mixed spice, put thick layers of lemon curd on the bread instead. If you can't buy that it is really easy to make. And Lemon Curd Bread and Butter Pudding, especially eaten hot, is a delice. Has anyone seen this recipe, I sort of think I have made it up.....it is very good though.

Incidentally I always put dried fruit in a bread and butter pudding, but not in my lemon one.
  8. I'm sorry I don't quite understand, are you saying that she will be doing the first two terms in France and the third in the UK, or the first term in the UK, the second in France and the third in the UK.

You say she is five, was she five in 2004 or 2003. That also counts in France.

  9. If I were you, I would just be pleased that this has been spotted and that the vendor is getting it sorted out now. It could take months, more likely months than weeks I would imagine.

You didn't need to be buying somewhere and having your neighbour attacking you about this did you. So if I were you I would sit back and let the vendor sort it out.
  10. I think the sumo comments really were to get up Black Jack's nose.

Re the prostitutes, well, I'd legalise it.....let them pay their taxe professionelle and cotisations. They'll just go somewhere else when the police start hassling them.
  11. Could someone please tell me what this is. I've realised that I haven't got a clue.

I had thought that it was given to people of working age who were unfit to work.....but then, it comes to mind that handicapped people work, so I'm confused again. And the questions that are asked make it sound like some sort of pension and I had been convinced that it wasn't that either.

    So what is it please?
  12. Rents in the cities around here which I would imagine would be similar to Lyon are around 320 per month + charges, which can be as low as 20 and up to around 60 per month, and it is variable as to whether electricity is included, which shouldn't be much as this would be for a studio of around 22m, they too vary from around 15m to almost 30m.

    Can't speak for Tours.

Try looking at the Logeka.fr web site, they will show you a list of rentals.

I was on a manif that seemed to work. Contra some 'new' reform in education, must be at least 10 years ago now. It peeed down all day long and we had a smashing time. When we got to Paris we had to catch the metro to get to our bit of the start of the manif. The platform was packed, I mean PACKED and there were about 10 of us from our village, staying together in a foule like that was hard and Agnes and I got stuck behind. I felt hands grabbing me and I suppose she did too as we were woth literally dragged onto the train that the others had managed to board. We howled with laughter, goodness knows who they'd bowled over getting us on that train.

Do manif's work, well some do, some don't. Some of the wagon drivers strikes made the government back down in the past. These days and I'm not sure.
  14. That is exactly what they taste like it.

I did heave at table when I inadvertantly took one at a friends house and because the table was animated hadn't really looked at what I was cutting into and then popping into my mouth. Soon stopped the conversation though. I felt quite ashamed.

Husband likes them and we will cook them on the bar b que, I would rather they weren't cooked in my kitchen.
  15. I had been thinking that, like ergot had been a healthy to our ancestors diet.

I don't know of many people as fit as my Dad, 80 this year, how many on here can run 10kms in around 56 minutes, 54 mins on a good day, young or old....I couldn't even walk it. And he still fries in lard and eats butter.

I've just finished the rest of the cold salmon from last night. I love salmon. I don't want to live for ever, but I am inclined to enjoy the 'now' of life.
  16. I'm afraid all this talk of milk puddings inspired me to make a rice pud this afternoon, with lots of lovely nutmeg on it. I love nutmeg but french friends find it very strange that I use it on sweet things.
  17. I have some quibbles with a few things, but the overall isn't bad.

There are still Lycee professionals that will take kids to reorientate post 5eme.

I disagree completely with the homey nice bit about the SEGPA's though. I wouldn't want to see any child with a normal IQ in one. Maybe it should be learning support, but it isn't. I would be censored if I said what I wanted to say about this, so I'll say no more. However, if anyone here is told that their child should be in such a section in a college, then think long, very long and very hard, before agreeing.
