Glad to hear everyone's reports. We are still enjoying our new home / town.

I have now finished my drugs and my breathing is pretty much normal now. I don't know how my husband did not get it. He felt funny for 2 days, but never really got sick like I did.

I am now able to take my walks outside like I had been before. I always wear a mask the minute I walk out the front door.

Delighted to read that you are regaining your good health .. it sounds as though you have found an excellent GP ?
  2. Here in South 56 the tourists have arrived in force .. the first fortnight of August being traditionally the busiest 2 weeks of the summer.

Nearly everyone wears a mask where they need to .. at the market, inside any shop or place open to the public.

Many wear them all the time ..

Social distancing is more restrained due to the numbers so care needs to be taken.

There are even more bikes about than usual ??

Restos are doing their bit with tables well separated and disinfection of menus/tables etc very high on the list.

Fortunately the food still tastes just as delicious.

So far so good .. but you wouldn't want to go to the beach, or in the water, in the afternoon as there are hoards of people, families and young ones just everywhere.

At least 90% are French with a few cars from NL/B/D and some from CH. There was even one car from UK ? in the beach car park we cycle past.

Daughter made a last-minute decision to visit, flying in from Manchester .. fortunately her plane was only 2/3 full so there was no one sitting next to her.

So, being careful everywhere we go, we are surviving so far. Daughter very tanned due to the very sunny weather.

Trouble is that this person knows the rules, and yet they made the decision to ignore them, embette'ing folk, who, well, knows and who cares. What is the expression, 'trying it on'.

Too true .. tho for the present I am, as you say, sorted.

Last evening he started again .. at 18h30 on a Friday ?.

I was inside watching the news and then cooking .. so the fan was going etc. So his noise didn't disturb me.

But 'he' continued until 20h .. when all went quiet.

My OH was weeding in the garden and heard a woman's voice complaining over the din .. she was obviously as fed up as I had been that lunchtime (this woman works, so wasn't around that time.)

Perhaps said arrogant person will get the message .. don't push us too far ?.

My conclusion .. altho this person is a pro tree-feller he is obviously finishing this job 'on the side' as he no longer does normal hours here ..

He was there for a while this am .. from about 10h30 .. but all was fairly quiet (no chainsaw) .. I had to go out but he wasn't there when I got back.

En cas de gêne, vous devez contacter la mairie ou la préfecture pour connaître les conditions de réalisation du chantier et les horaires autorisés.

Fortunately it hasn't ever come to that .. (aimiable) face to face usually works .. or at least it has up to now (smiley face)

Surely all the noise is at appropriate hours, the Bruits de Voisinage.

The neighbours are fine .. it's the tree fellers in clearing land for building, who use professional chain-saws through lunchtime who are amongst the noisiest.

One argued with me that he could work all through lunch as he was not a 'particulier' but a pro .. but he had second thoughts after I mentioned the 'code de travail' and our Mairie's permissable hours of noisy operations.

Eventually he stopped for about 3/4 hour .. so we could eat in peace.
  6. Hereabouts .. since the incoming new mayoral team arrived some years ago .. new homes rising up have become very much the norm.

We have new building everywhere around us in a very old old, small area ..of what was, in olden days, a hamlet.

This hamlet has become incorporated into the adjacent, ever-advancing village, which has burst its bindings and is trying to absorb all around it into an ever-increasing bubble.

All was calm and peaceful before .. now the constant noise is getting me down. Noise from construction .. noise from every kind of upkeep maintenance such as gardening machinery, machinery belonging to the commune etc.

Perhaps it is time to sell-up and move on .. but it is a super spot with superb neighbours .. but the constant noise is really getting to me.

So the car thing is an extra thing I could do without. I might end up being naughty and taking my chances for a while, and yes I know I will deserve whatever comments you throw at me and I will take them on the chin :-)

If by being naughty you mean keeping your RHD car then I'm with you. In my view a lot depends on where you live .. we live in a ruralish area .. very busy in summer and any school holiday with holidaymakers .. in cars and on bikes everywhere. But there is literally only 1 main road in and out of our area and the authorities have put traffic calming measures there and everywhere .. overtaking a car/cars anywhere is mostly impossible.

So I am causing no problems to anyone by having my RHD.

If there is one persons advice I trust on all matters 'French' on all French forums is Eurotrash. I trust their advice more than my OH's.

    I totally agree ..

    and also :

The standard of driving in France since lockdown has plummeted. It is soo dangerous out there.

    Keep safe.

I don't drive long distances but locally, IMHO, the quality of driving has deteriorated since the lockdown.

And now the speed mad holidaymakers are here I shall use my bike a lot more.

I'm quite happy with what I'm planning and very comfortable with my aims.

    Good for you ..

You have been given good advice .

If you choose not to take it .. then that's your choice.

Legally as you are now resident in France you have a short time to register your car here.

You will need to make a declaration of tax to be able to move forward in your new French life.

  10. NickP wrote the following post at 11 Jul 2020 22:57:

Of course, I have a UK state pension, plus a private pension, I pay my tax in the UK I haven't yet declared in France but will next year. How do I know what's right for me? I pay an accountant to advise me on that subject.

So you haven't yet filled in the form to tell the UK that you no longer live there ?

If you haven't been completing a French tax return how are you going to prove your right to stay in France for your CDS ?

Well, I'm obviously looking at this cross border thing in a too simplistic way. I spent most of my working life working in other countries ..

As for social charges you only pay once, at one time when working in Austria and being paid out of Austria I paid local tax and insurance, that was then allowed against my normal charges in the UK. It was all very simple.

Yep .. but the UK will no longer have any connection to the EU after December 31 2020 .. the UK will become a third world country, so such matters won't be arranged so simply anymore.

And greetings to you too suein56. I think you're having better weather than us, after the beautiful spring we've had a lot of rain and a lot of wind. Mrs W is finding that veg growing back here - even with a polytunnel - is a slower process than in 24. And the bleedin' SLUGS, everywhere! Luckily we've a whole lot of bottled beer that is past its sell by date and not as nice as it was, but the slugs think it's heaven (quite literally, because they quickly end up there soon after the first sip).

Here in southern Morbihan we were in a small depression for a while .. but yesterday matters improved and today summer has arrived .. 27° or so around lunchtime.

The mixed sunshine, showers and then some cooler weather meant everything shot up in the potager and in the garden .. especially the weeds.

We too struggle with slugs .. and birds .. eating everything at all edible.

Apparently it's done sometimes for old folk in homes that don't have a phone line easily provided, instead of giving them a mobile which would probably confuse them, you give them a conventional phone plugged into a Huawei type modem-router with a phone SIM, and they don't have anything new to contend with as the phone appears to behave like a perfectly normal landline in use.

    Hello again Martin ?

Just to add that this is what I am proposing to install for an elderly friend who really needs to be in a 'retirement home' but is fighting going there all the way.

She is, OTOH, familiar with mobile usage as she has had repeated Hospital stays, where mobiles accessing whatsapp calls are the norm using 4G.

But in order to ring the fixed numbers of her (distant) family in the UK she needs a handset which is enabled to access UK numbers and which can be plugged into the (Sim) router.
  14. I don't know the ins and outs .. just that the estate was divided between my friend and the 2 children .. and that there was quite a lot of tax to pay.

The problem was the family were quite asset rich but income poor so paying the taxes within the time required was impossible .. due to the 2 1/2 years needed for the sale to go through.

It was a substantial house with a super sea view but it needed work doing on it.

Hubby had at least one other (inherited) plot he owned too.
  15. Normally nowadays it is expected that the taxes due will be paid with the 6 months following the death.

My friend, who was widowed 3 years ago, had a problematic period as she put up for sale the family home .. which was in 'his' name only .. asap but it took 18 months to find a buyer and then there were complications as it was a couple buying with the parents of the wife. All in all it took nearly 2 1/2 years to conclude the sale and the interest due on the debt was eye-watering.

    Lessons learnt all round.

It meant my friend could not buy the apartment she wanted but the one her family found for her is very nice .. just smaller than she wanted and not quite where she wanted to be.
  16. French property is usually dealt with according to French succession law. But as she is UK resident there are things she can do to influence this slightly.

Relatives .. except a spouse .. are treated more leniently than 'an unrelated individual' as regards inheritance tax.

While I am no expert I would suggest that she might make a UK will naming this 'individual' as the sole heir to the property. Then she makes a French will saying that she wants her French property to be passed on according to her UK will ref this property.

There are downsides .. I believe the tax cost of inheriting the property could be 60% of the value as declared by the Notaire.

Then there are the transfer of title costs.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon.

I think it’s an awful waste of money when millions o& people are feeling the pinch. As I have chosen to live in France I would much rather pay my taxes here. ALBF is correct about that.

The plane that Sarkozy ordered is still in (partial) use by Macron .. most of the time it sits unused in its hangar.

Apparently the UK equivalent will be shared among a goodly number of people.

    You pays your taxes ..

    Still waiting here ..

The wait is almost over .. this week we received a letter from DGFip saying that our dégrèvement has been agreed (happy smiley face here) and that we shall also be awarded interest on the years claimed .. 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Now what was that about being able to claim for 2018 ?

To me this seems very odd, as I already live, work and pay taxes in the Netherlands.

Is this lawyer clueless, or what am I missing.

    No .. he's not clueless.

France is very tax strict ..

This could be quite complicated .. it depends on many factors.

    You are Dutch, so European.

If your wife, as a Chinese national, wants to benefit from being considered a 'wife' in the French tax sense then, normally, the husband lives with his wife in the family home.

Otherwise he has a european permit to work elsewhere which includes tax considerations.

Where will you spend most of your time ?

Someone who knows more detail than me will, hopefully, be along soon to reply more fully.

I'll send you a private message.
