1. We use nielson net ratings for our visiting figures. There has been an increase in visitors to the forum since December when the new forum software came in. Probably due to a number of things (new years resolutions etc) but also I feel because the pages load sooo much quicker than the old software.

As for a natural lifetime of a forum, that is an interesting question. I presume that with something like moving/living in France there will be new people considering it and people who go off the idea. If the forum was related to a time sensitive topics I would image there is a natural lifetime for a forum.

  2. As I said, it is because when we migrated from the old system to the new one, we had to use the email addresses for the usernames. We couldn't give access to email addresses due to security. I have asked the developer and when the upgrade is available we should be able to change this.

  3. Hi,

We have a classified section in the magazines but I will look into a classified section (have to run it past powers that be).

The google ads are on trial at the moment. We do have the ability to remove certain companies from the google ads (filters). The response rates for the banners and tiles are greater than the google ads and hasn't affected paid for advertising in the mags so far.

One question: How do Archant make money from these ads.  Do they get paid each time they are shown or do they get paid when somebody clicks on one of their ad links ?

    Hi,

It's on a per click basis. As a business we need to explore new revenue streams...especially to support our online activity...it's a way to indirectly receive money for the forum upkeep.

  5. The reason is that Mr Frank O'Phile edited his post after you posted, edited posts are treated as a new addition to the forum and therefore appear as the newest post in the forum.

It isn't your settings, it's the forum settings and soemthing we looked into but can't change.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Hi,

I'm off to Le Mans this year and would be interested in anyone that has made the trip from the UK in their car.

I guess I will need to let my insurance company know and the headlights will need adjustment, anything else?

    Thanks

  7. Oh, OK...I didn't realise as I am using admin rights so I see different buttons. I guess this is the button you see:

I have checked the system and I can't see any control over this for users so it must be a set time limit from posting, hence if you edit you can then delete.

The edit function is currently set with no time limit.

  8. I have checked the settings for editing on the forum software.

You should be able to edit any of your posts as there is currently not a time limit on editing.

There is a difference between editing and deleting. I was under the impression that you couldn't delete a post entirely but could edit it to remove the message...if you would like it deleted email me and I will do it.

    Hope this helps.

  9.
Out of interest, the Google ads seemed to be connected to some keyword in either the thread title or the posts below it. Was that the case? If so I can think of some interesting thread titles we could use to provoke some - shall we say ripe - Google ads...
I think it will probably depend on where the code is inserted (within the forum skin). It seemed to have a preference for showing plumbing services when we tested them!

  10. Hi,

Harely's blog is now live and can be accessed from the main conference page of the forum under 'Finding/Owning French property forum'.

    Direct link: http://www.livingfrance.com/blogs/harleyblog.asp

All the recently added blogs are available from the Living France home page http://www.livingfrance.com (first in the drop down menu on 'Virtual France') or here:

Like many other people here, I use the "active" button to find the most recent posts since there isn't a "post since last visit" option. For the last couple of days, this has thrown up threads with no new posts on them since 2004, mixed in with recent threads.  Some of them have been very interesting and I start wondering how they have got to 2 or 3 pages without me noticing. Just as I'm about to post my comments, I see the date.

Am I the only person this is happening to ? if so, any ideas why I am jinxed?

I haven't seen any old threads within the active threads link myself http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/TopicsActive.aspx but it is possible to have an old thread in this section if a posterer has gone back to the thread and edited it.
