  1. Yes that's always the problem when someone develops a golf course.  We used to belong to a proprietor owned club here in Shropshire and they started building holiday lodges etc which on top of the large number of societies just made it untenable for members getting tee times etc.  Fingers crossed that this won't happen at your club and that you will just benefit from any improvements.   Actually the club we're in now - Ludlow - is unoficially twinned with Barbaste.  Many years ago they had a couple of reciprocal visits which were a great success.  I only found this out a couple of months ago - it's a small world!

Maybe we'll bump into one another on the course this year.

    Best wishes

  2. Hi Sue

Thanks for the email, I was surprised to see the post as it was a long time since the last entry.  We didn't get to play Barbaste in the end but are going to play it this year.  It's interesting that it has been sold, do you think this will be for the good?  Are the new owners going to do lots of work to the actual course as well as the buildings etc?

  3. Thanks for all the replies.  We have used green oak in our house in Shropshire and it looks great but the shrinkage has caused a few problems so we would rather not use it for this job.  We are going to divide a room by building a low wall and then oak beams rising to the ceiling on top of the wall at intervals of about 3ft.  We have a room downstairs where they used this method and it is very effective - it divides the room well but keeps each room light.

  4. Could anyone please suggest a good place to stopover when we drive down to the Gers from Calais via Bordeaux using the new motorway starting after Rouen (passing le mans,Tours, Poitiers)?  We are looking for somewhere about 5-6 hours from Calais within reasonable distance of the motorway.  Hopefully a good clean reasonable auberge with a decent restaurant (not michelin starred level).

Incidentally we know an excellent place where we used to stop when using the old route passing Limoges via Chartres if anyone is interested.  It's the Auberge de Pomme de Pins at Senonches -very basic clean rooms with and excellent but reasonable restaurant. http://www.restaurant-pommedepin.com/

    Many thanks

  5. Hi

I have bought three pairs of GHD straighteners on the internet from various companies.  They are brilliant straighteners - the best in fact -  but they do have problems and tend to break after the guarantee period ends. If you buy from an official GHD outlet then you will have no problems as the main agent in the UK Jemella http://www.ghdhair.com/uk/index.php will repair or replace the straighteners if they have genuinely stopped working (ie not through misuse).  Beware of any that are amazingly cheaper than the going rate - £66 seems ridiculously cheap - i would expect to pay £89 - £99 for a pair.  If they are fake then they won't work like the proper GHD's so you might as well just buy a cheap pair - which are as good as useless.  I speak from experience having two hair obsessive daughters  who take after their mother - me!

  6. Hi Paul

In an ideal world it would be wonderful if we could employ someone quicky and easily but I fear if we were to rely on anyone turning out to do the work this side of 2010 then our house would freeze solid!  Sadly, so far, our experience of the reliability of local artisans has not been a good one.  We will indeed fit a froststat some time next year but for now will set the heating to come on for a couple of hours during the coldest part of each night.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

  7. Hi Liz and Richard

Good to meet some near neighbours!  Wow it has been cold there too hasn't it!  We've just booked our flights for next weekend to set our central heating for a few hours each night.  Not only is it a general worry but it's actually a condition of our insurance for leaving the property in the winter months so better to be safe than sorry.

Montreal is indeed a great village - with excellent shops and superb coffee (and armagnac) in Bernard's bar!  Hope we'll bump into you there one day or night.  Isn't your village the one with the well renowned Sunday restaurant?  It's on our list of places to visit for next year.

    Bye for now.

Ps -hope you get your heating sorted out soon!

  8. Hi Pat

Thanks so much for the reply.  I suppose I'm panicking a little as we have had two extremely cold nights here in Shropshire where it's been down to -5C which is very unusual for this time of the year.  We were in Montreal last November and whilst it was very cold it wasn't near freezing, but it would be our luck this year if it did freeze there before Christmas.  We do have someone who could check things over but the central heating controls aren't the simplest in the world and ceratinly difficult to explain over the phone!  I think we will try to go down there before Christmas and then it would set our minds at rest.

    Thanks

  9. Does anyone know if it generally gets cold enough in the Monteal du Gers area to freeze pipes in an unheated but well insulated house?  We were hoping to get down before Christmas to put our central heating on for a few hours a night but can't now get there until the beginning of January.  How much of a risk would this be?  If it does fall below freezing is it in December or more likely to be January and February?

    Many thanks.

  10. Hi Lou

Thanks for the reply.  Lucky you off to golf in Ireland, the courses there are magnificent - must be all that rain!  I will take your advice about Barbaste and make it our third round.  If we go on the Saturday we can combine a visit to the market in Nerac which is a super place to visit.

Yes it is the Montreal near Condom and yes it is a beautiful village, we are very lucky to have found a house right in the centre so are also well into village life there.

Good luck in Ireland and with the rest of your renovation and yes do keep in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Kim

  11. Hi Lou

Thanks so much for the reply, much appreciated.  No I haven't played Villeneuve yet,as it's not really very close to us as we're in Montreal du Gers which is 20 minutes from Nerac and about 30 minutes from Castlejaloux.  We've only bought our house this spring and we're looking forward to playing many courses over the forthcoming years so will certainly put Villeneuve on our list of courses to play.

We have friends with us at the end of this month for an annual 3 day golf tournament and will play Guinlet and Mont de Marsan but I would like to add one other for our 3rd day but because of the time constraints it needs to be relatively close, which is why I've asked about the other two courses .  Would you say that Barbaste would be better to play than Castlejaloux perhaps?

    Many thanks for your help.

  12. I spent hundreds of hours on the internet last year searching for a house in France.  I initially looked at the English property agents but soon found that the best way to find a house is through a French estate agent. Take a look at http://www.fnaim.fr/ which will help you find estate agents in the area you are looking at.  You can also buy property through the Notaires at http://www.notaires.fr/notaires/notaires.nsf/V_TC_PUB/GBIMM  and http://www.immonot.com/

Once you decide on the area then decide on the town you can search exhaustively  using www.google.fr until you find any other agents to contact.  After almost a year and 7 visits later we found our dream house in the Gers but I had to visit so many unsuitable properties first.

    Happy hunting.

  13. Hi

I've played and enjoyed the golf courses at Mont de Marsan and Golf de Guinlet (near Eauze) but would like any comments on the golf courses at Casteljaloux and Barbaste please.  What is the quality like and are they enjoyable courses?

    Many thanks

  14. Hi

I don't know about Normandy but i know of an excellent removal company that took some of our things down to the Gers.   They are based in Bristol but will collect from anywhere - we actually took our things to them as we were having a lot of new furniture but they would have collected and we live in Shopshire.  They deliver virtually every week to South West France but they may well stop elsewhere on route.  They were so reasonable, extremely helpful and friendly and the service was superb.  All arrived in one piece, in the week that they promised which was the most suitable for us.  They are Langdons removals in Bristol and the contact was Ian Yandall Ian Yandall [[email protected]]

Hope this helps and good luck.

  15. Hi

Does anyone know of anywhere that offers secure long term parking near Bordeaux Merignac airport?  We would like to buy a car in France and keep it near the airport whilst we're back in the UK rather than continually renting a car each time we visit our house in France (which is monthly at the moment).

    Many thanks
