  1. We came over with cats and guinea pigs.  The cats needed passports because they can roam.  The guinea pigs just needed a letter of health from our vet because they are caged animals.  We had to visit the vet and pick up this paperwork just before we left.  We had no problems.
  2. I was lent this book by our German neighbour and being the totally naive and innocent person that I am, took one look at the cover and wondered where in France the region of "The Merde" was.  What a fool I felt when I finally got around to reading the book.  However, it was a great book  and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.  And now at least I can swear in French when I hammer my thumb while knocking in fence posts to contain our amorous cockerel(male chicken).
  3. When we go to visit friends in East Anglia later this year we probably will but for our normal route (to west Surrey and Hampshire) this would be a nightmare with three young children.  For us that would mean five hours in the car this side and another three the other side.  Because of the distance one way and the cost of travel the other we don't travel as often as we would like.  We are probably not the only ones either.  Perhaps though, by biting the bullet and driving the longer distance every time, other operators would reconsider their pricing policies but I doubt it!!!!!

They really do think they have us by the short and curly's don't they?

    Well they make me

    Speedferries here we come

  4. Why does it cost more to travel on the ferries the longer you stay abroad?

Do they have to pay their staff more money?

Do they keep the boat in dock like a waiting taxi with the clock ticking?

Do they think that because the longer I stay the more money I must have?

    Can anyone explain this?

Can we not have fixed rates each way depending on when you want to travel and the type of vehicle?

    For example

Low season, High season, Peak season

    Day crossing, Night crossing

Price changes only if overlapping seasons

    Car with/without trailer, caravan

Not affected by duration of stay

  5. A friend of mine moved over to France with family and much loved dog which had been suitably treated so as not to add to the vast number of unwanted puppies.  A short time later a cat, who had been seen in and out of the garden, waltzed into the house and proceeded to give birth to four kittens.  The cat in no way belonged to them or apparently their neighbours.  My friends looked after the whole family.  Mum was duly neutered at their expense and then she disappeared.  We took one of the kittens and they decided to keep the other three, all of which have been "seen to" to prevent future problems.

I know there are a great many people out there who do not take pet ownership as seriously as they should and their irresponsibility makes me very angry but when people ask for help finding homes for animals on this forum it is not necessarily the case that they are the irresponsible party.  Had my friend decided to use this Forum (that I introduced her to) to find homes for these animals I would hate to think that she would have received short shrift.  This is such a fantastic forum it seems a shame to spoil it by not confirming facts before we respond angrily and therefore risk upsetting people.  There could be another explanation to the situation they find themselves in.

  6. We are looking to extend our house and are looking for a good builder.  We are in the region of Hambye/Percy/Villedieu if there is anyone in this area.  Have tried the Pages Jaunes but no luck.  Would prefer to go on a recommendation anyway.  French or English.  Am I asking the impossible?
  7. Do you have any pipes coming from the bathroom/kitchen to the exterior walls of the house.  If so, it may be as easy as following these.  Our septic tank was covered over.  It stank.  We uncovered it and had it emptied.  Not pleasant.  When we bought the house it was described as a fosse septique but it wasn't and had just filled up to the point of bursting. Yukkkkk!!!  It shouldn't be that far down you could also go round with a pole and poke it in the ground around the house. Of course it could just be a soak away and when it rains the ground water level rises and brings things up with it!!! The mairie may be able to help.  I believe they arrange to inspect new fosse installations (health and safety and all that) and may know who can come and check it out.  Sorry, don't know what else to suggest.  Good luck.
  8. Perhaps if BF prices were more reasonable they would encourage more passengers.  There must be those who travelled with P&O through financial necessity rather than choice.  For these people, the increase in fares may well be a strong factor in wether they decide to maintain property in Northern France or continue to holiday in France.  We know quite a few people who travel to and fro regularly and the difference in the foot passenger charges is incredible.
  9. I have to say that I agree with Teamdup on this one.  Things change.  Laws, prices, product availability, regulations etc.  Therefore someone will always have a new perspective to offer.  If you are one of those who gets annoyed at repeated questions then I feel very sorry for you.  It is not compulsory for you to put your two penneth in.  Go and do some gardening, take a walk or read a book and let those who are happy to pass on their experiences do so without any unpleasantness.  Thank you and a Happy New Year to one and all.
  10. We are looking for a very good home for this little chap.  He is free and comes with an indoor cage.  We purchased a young female from a car boot sale and got more than we bargained for!!!  In my opinion they make lovely pets for children.  Can anyone help?
