  1. We have a dial up connection for our holiday home, with it came with an e-mail address. I have never given my e-mail address out to anyone nor have we actually sent any e-mails from this account but I keep getting e-mails all in French. So FT have given/sold my details to third parties. So  EVERY e-mail I receive from that account gets sent to abuse@orange, won't make things change but makes me feel better.

And yes I have had the e-mails saying they have made an error in the debits and I owe 600 or 700 euros, since my contract is on payg I know its a scam.

  2. Ulster,

Might be an idea to try and get a new gasket before you strip it down, we had an old Chauffe'au once about the same age as yours. I had to take the bottom plate off, the gasket was stuck to the metal due to age, although I managed to remove the gasket the thing was never fully water tight again as I had to reuse the old gasket.

    Just an idea.

  3. Just had an e-mail from France Telecom/Orange? have copied it below, received this via my E-mail account linked to my internet account with FT. I think it is a con, anyone else had the same, must admit had a bit of a scare before we went through it. Did have my suspicions on this as my name wasn't shown on the e-mail. I take it, it is normal practice in France for companies to put your name on e-mails as they do in the UK.

Ps I applied for access Libre back in September with Orange, had never given the e-mail address to anyone, never used it, went on for the first time and already had e-mails from sexy Monica, Sophie etc.

  4. I have just signed up for France Telecoms PAYG dialup service (Not broadband) to use when we are in France, it seems they are going to send a disc to our holiday home awaiting our arrival. I am not happy loading third party software onto the computer, I can remember the problems when I had dial-up in the UK and used the ISP's disc. Is there a computer savvy person who has this tariff and can give me information on e-mail settings for Outlook Express, (pop3 settings) or are the e-mails only web based. Also the phone number you have to dial to enter their system so I can set up the system before we get there.

    Thanks

Yes should be easy Astra ( sky) is I believe 28.2 deg east. we did ours no problem, just needed to tweek it when we got the signal, just take your time and get as good a signal and quality as you can, saves problems when its wet and windy. Mind I don't suppose you will be reading this for a few days at least if you are like us traveling to Mc Do's every few days to read e-mails etc. Never thought I'd say I like McDo.

  6. If you are bringing over a new tv (digital freeview tuner inside) it will work in France as long as your area is broadcasting French tv using their digital format. That is of course if you want to watch French tv. We did this with our old CRT digital tv, the only thing that does not work is teletext, but that is not a problem for us. Also just replace the english plug with a French one.

  7. Virginia,

I phoned this morning to arrange having a phone installed,  00 33 15 57 86 05 6  was told by the robot I would be dealt  within 10 minutes, sat and listened to the music and messages ( in English) and got through to a lovely young lady who's English was a lot better then my French and sorted out a line then and there. Being connected next Monday when we get there.

PS think the message said the call is free if phoning from a FT phone in France?, did try a freephone number first but that said phone back all lines busy, if its urgent use the number I used at least you should get through quicker.

    Good luck

  8. Like Andy I use Currencies Direct for large amounts and Moneybookers for small transfers, as we needed a top up on our account, and I wasn't keen at the moment to transfer a large amount due to the exchange rate I decided to use MoneyBookers just to keep the account ticking over, we transferred £1250.00, looking at our French account this morning the money was there and the rate charged was 1.0952 by Moneybookers, the business rate for yesterday was 1.1322. What do other people think of this rate.

  9. Thanks Ian for the info, oh well top up the bank time then, am going to phone FT to see about installing a line would be interested in any feedback when you have phoned FT. Could the reason you lost the ability to turn it off ( phone I assume) was because you paid the first bill via Nationwide?

We won't be having internet, too far out for broadband, just the phone with the ability to turn it off when we are not there.

    Cheers

    Steve

  10. Ian,

Item 4 on your post, I take it you paid for the installation using your Natwide debit card, did you by any chance manage to get the line rental and calls put through on this card, or have you got to pay via a French account. We manage to get our doofer paid through Nationwide, wondering if I can also try it with the phone, saves the hassle of topping up the French account.

    Cheers

  11. My other half used to buy me Hugh Johnsons pocket wine guide as a xmas pressy a few years back. It gave the good vintage years on different areas of France etc. and other information like what wine to drink with certain meals. It can be obtained on Amazon for 6 pounds odd. Well worth the money

    Happy drinking

  12. Did exactly this last year with some wood I purchased, plus some bolts, just got on with it. Used a roll of that cane fencing stuff for the roof and used the area for sitting out in the shade, lovely dappled effect  with the sun. Never thought of seeing if the Marie could find any regulations for us.
