1. I have heard of some horror stories in Northern France. The traffic police target U.K. plated cars for speed fines. Stop you and if you do not have the cash on you kindly drive toyou to the nearest cash point, where you pay up and they then leave you there. Better hope there is a passanger with a driving licence in the car., so can can follow you. First thing i would buy driving over from the U.K. is a copy of AUTO PLUS magazine. This lists all the main speed cameras in France with maps to show what areas they are in.

  2.
Now after all the posts here, I do not like asking this question but I am going to steel myself and ask away. We have an old but totally reliable Nissan that is at the moment taxed, MOTed and compr...
Lots of Nissan Patrol's and Micra's around and no you do not need to be a French resident to insure a car here.

  3. Tesco Internet shopping.....i hate going to the supermarket

The book shops on Charing Cross and the passages off of it.

Sundaty pub lunch with all the trimmings, oh and a few pints of Young's winter warmer

    Yo! Sushi for lunch

    Paul Smith-Floral St

    Favourbrooks-St James

    Harvey Nic's

    Camden Market

    A kebad at 5am

Hyde Park on a frosty winters morning.

Almost makes me want to jump on a plane........until i see the weather reports on Sky and now these things have become even more of a pleasure because i only spend 3 or 4 days a year in London. Now if i had to live in England again there would be many more thing i miss from here in France and over the border in Spain.

  4. What is the big hang-up with hunting. The animal gets to live a good life if the woods. You get very fresh meat from an animal that as not been pumped full of god knows what drugs to make it larger and leaner. The pleasure of killing your own food, is the true conection between man and beast. Unlike buying grey packets from the supermarket.

  5. Lost count of the number of Peel sessions LP's and CD's i've got. I even used to record his show on tape, so i could listen to it in the car on long drives( any drive in London). He was a real force the British music. A champion of the unsigned.

  6. I saw one of these in my local shopping centre and have read about one's that are made in France in an old GQ(u.k.) magazine but so far have been unable to find a maker of them...help please. Not that sure what they are called in French or English for that matter. They look a little like a quad bike but have 2 front facing seats. I have seen the Yamaha one on there U.S web site but have had no luck looking in France.

    Cheers in advance.

  7. Seems done here in coastal Aude we have lots of banks in small towns.,either everyone is rolling in money or hocked up to there eye ball's. Most of the chain stores are in out of town-ish shopping centres but there are a good few estate agents around, not as many as in the U.K. though and not an Oxfam or Save The One Legged Toad charity shop in sight.

  8. I would put London at about 3rd place after New York and Milano. The thing that most people who are not Londoners, do not understand, is that it is a city of villages with no true heart. Crime-much less in real terms than a lot of northern towns, Dirty-ditto. The clutural diversity is the greatest in the world. Breakfast in an Yemen coffee shop, lunch in a Malay restaurant and dinner in a Sri Lankian resraurant at 2am in the morning. Those who knock it have never lived it.

  9. Egypt..now that's food poisoning. Lived there for 3 month's and never got well. Had to visit the chemist and ask for un-mentionables things. Been in a few other parts of the world without the slighest problem. Eaten food from vendors on trains in Asia and from bus windows in Africa without the slighest upset, but 5* hotels in Egypt........

Never been ill in France and eat out at least 3 times a week.

  10.
Need to buy a selection of these for the new house. Electrician does not want the hassel - and who can blame him! Anyone know somewhere with a reasonably wide selection reachable from Quillan? Rob
If you do not mind a bit of a drive, Bauhus(?) a large brico just south of Gerone(a) have a very good selection at good prices and the bulbs are much cheaper than in France.

  11. "I do not think we need any country which is predominantly islamic entering the eu. It is the road to disaster. Islam is causing enough trouble now, we do not want any more".

    Dunrunnin

I think the idea of sepratism of faiths, is the very reason we are in the state we are in at present. The muslims (rightly in some cases) think christains(USA) want to take over the world, Distroy there cultue ect. If by letting an Islamic nation join the E.U. club we can alter this image and help to spread humans rights and democracy east, this would be the greatest thing the E.U. as ever done. The only bar should be economic instablity and human rights issues, some of which could at any rate be taken to the European court once Turkey becomes a full member. Bringing an Islamic nation into the E.U. fold will also be a good foil to American Imperailism in the region. Turkey as more to offer than some on the new Eastern European members and with the right help from the E.U. could be a beacon of a modern Islamic state in these changing times.

  12. The thing to remember is not just the amount of wine drank with a meal, but the meal. A good sized meal and a small glass of wine can make you very sleepy and this is a VERY big cause of accidents on the roads.I know the first thing i want to do after a good lunch is put my feet up and nap for an hour or so, add a glass or 2 of wine and you can make that 2 hours.

The best bet for a driver is a "lite" lunch and NO booze.

  13. We have a mcroclimate here in 11360. Very little rain all year but when the sky's open up it lasts 24 hours +. The roads flood, washing the top soil away. Feeels all most tropical in nature. Still nice and warm here during the day but last night was the first time the temp dropped below 10c when i popped outside for my last cig at about 1am. Still no rain but a good amount of cloud passing over.

  14. We have a couple of petrole heaters as back-up for the electric rads. Keep one in the fire place now. We found burning wood dirty and keeping it dry a pain, oh and going out to the wood pile in the p***ing rain not much fun. They work very well. There cost in the Brico's seem to range a bit-from 60 euros to 700 euros. Our 150 euro heater in the fire place is very good and a real god send when we have had power outage's. Also very easy to see the amount of fuel that you have left, unlike gaz. The best bet is to have a range of heating. Portable heaters are good because they can be moved room to room.

  15.
Rdkr The BMW staff are highly trained to identify unsuitable potential owners - and it works. John
You mean i shoild have turned up wearing lots of gold chains and rings..or worse still dress liked a middle manager in a polyester suit covered in dandruff?

opps, never gave it a thought that the would be a dress code.

  16. An expat is someone invited to a country to work, an immmigrant is some who moves to a country uninvited to live/work. I have lived overseas and have found members of the expat community's who have been there for 20 years plus, where as immigrants often move around looking for work or better benifits.

    working class persons=immigrants

    middle class persons=expats
