1. It's an ashtray from an old BR train that is now mounted outside my front door. We have a no smoking house, so i have to stand out in the cold ( or lean out of the study window ;-) ) Do not ask our i came by it and i will tell you no lie's, but i think it involved rather a lot of beer!!!!!

  2. Shops that sell out of date food. What next car dealers selling cars without breaks? My folks are also hoarders of food. Something my father got from is parents during the war. They planned to have enough food stored, so that if the Germans invaded England they could eat like kings for 2 months before the krauts made it down to Cornwall. Now living out in the sticks i only go the the supermarket once a month, so have taken over the family gene. I have even got Colemans mustard powder and a couple of bottles odf HP sauce in the freezer.

  3. Not sure if any one lives on the Island????????????? Well not those who post here at any rate???? but just in case i was think about popping over for a week in Jan/Feb on the car ferry. Any prob's with a mainland French car( dept 11) and what would be the highlights of a weeks touring around the island? What are the must see places?

    Regards

  4. Last year, about this time my mother in-law was flying into PERPIGNAN AIRPORT.We got there nice and early.10 minutes before the plane was meant to land we found out it was touching down at another airport. Being RyanAir, no idea which. Mother in-law phone's us from Nimes and says she is in Riems. Oh s**t i think. Ask to speak to somebody else from the flight and find out it is Nimes. Coach on the way to Perp...yeah sure. One hour pases, still no news. Mother-law not a well lady. Diabetic etc ect. so have to drive from Perp to Nimes. The rain is bucketing down, accidents on the Autoroute and RyanAir staff vanished as soon as the plane landed. Good thing a nice Irish girl waited with her until we got there an hour after the coach had departed. At least we managed to bring some food with us. The entire airport was closed down. No one in sight just the mother-in-law and the nice Irish girl. SHOCKING. The airline also knew of her illnesses because you need to declare needles.
  5.
Ive never seen the magazine mentioned, but this site shows the locations of speed cameras in france http://www.securiteroutiere.equipement.gouv.fr/infos-ref/regles/csa/csa.html
I had a look at this site. It said my local camera is in a 70kmp zone, when in fact in is in a 90kmp zone that is used or over taking after to 70kph junction.

  6. I can see both sides of the coin here. When we first come over we rented a car for 3 months until we found a house to buy and then purchased a new car. I rented cars in London for the last couple of year's. This worked out much cheaper than buying. I did not need one all the time as our house was in cental London, plus i also had a motorbike for zipping about town. I have never driven a RHD car here in France but have been back to the U.K. in our LHD car and not found it an isssue apart from garage parking and the Dartford crossing. I noticed in Northern France on some tolls they have a RHD toll booth for U.K. car's BUT not a LHD toll booth on the Dartford crossing for LHD car's/lorry's,AND there are a lot of LHD lorry's that use it. I got some evil looks when i got out of my car to pay the toll at Dartford. Some Essex boy leaned out and said Go Home Frog, which i replied to in my best Queens English ****** ******** ******** ********** *********, to say he looked a little shocked would be an understatement.

  7.
I'm not sure that you need a map - the camera in Caen is well signed. The b*****r of it was that I thought that, at 110, my speed was within the limit having missed the sign(s) indicating a reduction...
Yes it does gives speed limits of camera's. The magazine looks a little like Auto Express from the U.K. and comes over every 2 weeks i think.

  8. I also wear double cuff shirts. Though not very often with suits.Thomas Pink was always a good stand by, but a 30 minute stroll down St James always finds me loaded up with bag's. Now i'm sure some bright spark will know why thay are called French Cuff. There only place i've found them in France is Paris and Nice and then only in very English types shops.

Back to the main topic. A lot of the bigger brands suffer from over exposure in certain high yield products. Lots fod rip off pruducts from the far east finding there way on to market stalls in Essex and the design houses themselves licencing all sorts of good with there brand on them. Just think of Cardin. From coulture to cheap and nasty pens and wallets in 10 years. I have been known to pop down Bond St now and again BUT never buy clothes with the brand names printed on the front, oh and i've DIY'ed in the best label's. Once they get tatty thats all they are good for.

Yes you do get what you pay for. I have an Amarni coat that is now 10 years old and still looks as good as the day i purchassed it.

  9. If it is only for 2 years it may not be worth the set up cost unless it is in a prime location and can be rented for the summer months, than use a local agent to rent it and they will help you sort out the tax situation. Do not forget start up costs include furniture that meets all safty standards, House and libilty insurance and fixed costs. Maybe better to class it as uninhabitable for 2 years, take out plumbing ( well this is the requirement for the U.K.) and i think the same for France. For long term rentals most agents look for 5 years + from owners.
