  1. I imagine that once France starts having to close classes/schools (when there are 3 flu cases in a class) we will start to see more realistic reporting of the numbers infected.

The holiday high-season will be finished by then, so they won't have to worry about scaring off tourists.

Of course they will probably say they caught it off the Brits [Www]

  2. When you do find it, use what you need and then pop the rest of the ginger root into a plastic bag and put it in the freezer.

It grates well even when frozen, and will keep indefinitely (and saves throwing the rest away).

  3. I wash my jars in the dishwasher and then, like Danny, sterilise them in the oven, and boil the seals.

I've never done the second sterilization after making jam or pickles, as I've never seen the need if everything is already sterile (although I would for a paté or meat based preserve). I just put the lid on, turn the jar over, and leave it to cool upside-down.

Sometimes the second sterilisation is needed to finish processing the preserve, in that case just cook it for a bit longer before putting it in the jar.

  4. I suspect that all (well most) of what has been posted on this thread (and others in the same vein) is well intentioned.

Please let's not forget though that even though Odlie is no longer posting here, she may well be following these threads.  Being unable to respond makes it all rather unfair, both on Odile and on the moderators.

We do step in when people are submitted to unrelenting bullying.  I myself have helped some of the people contributing to this thread (and the others) in the past with such matters, and I know that the other mods have done the same.

Whatever people's perceptions of this particular situation, I think it is only fair that we take the advice offered by JayJay, and let this one rest now.  Odile's friends wouldn't want to see her offended any more than she already is, and those not counting themselves in that number should perhaps think twice before contributing to prolonging the drama.

Actually these social networking sites are viewed by quite a lot by companies that research peoples job application forms. Its big business now getting prospect employees vetted by such companies. I might be members of one or two because of family but I never put anything up that can point to me. The odd photo of a person wearing knickers or pants on their head while totally drunk is not good viewing when applying for a senior position in a company. Of course its unfair and does not mean that they are not suited to the job and that they are entitled to spend their leisure time however they want but then thats life I guess.

I think it's more the people who spend all day posting on those sites about how they hate their boss, can't wait to go home, and are planning on throwing a sickie next week.

I've known parents who have been horrified to read their darling offspring's tales on Facebook and similar sites, but then perhaps they shouldn't have looked in the first place [:-))]

  6. As Will points out, it can indeed be only too easy to find out all about a poster if they are indiscreet about posting personal details on the internet.

I am often amazed and dismayed by people who post all kind of seemingly innocuous personal details on sites (their real names, date of birth, name of spouse or children, occupation etc).

One need only consult an online telephone directory, trade registration directory, or even Google to find out all kinds of further information.  And don't even get me started on Facebook, anyone who leaves their profile as public (rather than friends only) may as well pin their personal diary to their gatepost!

I am not saying that this was the case with person in question, just that people should be careful about what details they choose to give out on public forums.

  7. [quote user="writersblock"]Thanks for that... in this case 'Renovated' means to a very high standard by professional craftsmen using the finest quality materials - we've seen to many 'bodgers' and 'so called builders' which is why we used our own highly qualified people...

I am disappointed with your negativity - please don't assume that we are all out to make a quick profit for very little return

Mr Cat is tells me that he is seeing more and more people who, although perhaps having bought fairly cheaply, have spent huge amounts on renovation, and then find that they need to sell.  Of course, the value of the house for them is an amount that will recoup at least the initial cost of the house and the additional costs of the renovation/swimming pool etc.  Sadly this is often vastly more than the market value of the house (what a buyer will pay, rather than what a seller expects).

It's sad to see people trapped in this position, they can't afford to stay put, but can't afford to sell.

I'm not implying that this is your position writersblock, just that good renovations are expensive, and don't always pay for themselves in the short term.

Jo, If I had a pound for everyone who said they were leaving and then who came back, sometimes under a different ID, I and the other mods would be wealthy. If you are referring to that matter I suspect you are, I'd let the dust settle.

Quite. Let's not jump to conclusions

We often have people who threaten to leave, but then don't.

As far as I am aware, no one has asked recently for their membership to be terminated, that being the case I think we can assume that they are still with us.

  9. Mr Cat has recently started to refuse to take onto his books any houses where the price expectations of the owners are unrealistically high.

Some people say that they are in no hurry to sell, being content to wait until the market picks up and prices are more buoyant.  That's fine, for them, but Mr Cat's view is that he knows that he will never be able to sell at the price the owners expect, and so would be wasting his time, money and energy in trying.

Houses are still selling, but at the moment everyone knows that it's a buyers market..

It's always tricky, everyone wants to sell for the highest amount possible, but to buy for the lowest [:$]
