1. "how do you get solicitors moving"

Well actually Jill, some solicitors are quite unperturbed by the hassles of us moving and therefore either do not inform their clients properly of the process due to be sheer volume of work or their client is a timewaster or worse totally fails to understand.  In the latter case, it is difficult for the solicitor to tell the other party this without breaching confidentialities so he often gets the blame for doing nothing, when his hands are tied.  In my case, I knew someone down the chain was timewasting so I felt I had little to lose by giving a deadline.  It worked though.

I also think buyers are a bit like boyfriends, (if I remember that far back)  they don't like to smell desperation, if you excuse the analogy.  Conversely,  if they think someone else is interested, they go into a panic.

  2. Does anyone know the most reasonable way to text the UK from France with a UK mobile phone. Which is the most economical way to send and receive.  Tried asking in shops but they give me wrong answers and mostly don't know what I am talking about. How much are you paying??

    Cheers

  3. Yes, much more pleasant the daily newspaper in France, you can always find something cheerful, whereas our daily in UK just recently "snipers shooting at local schoolchildren with airrifle" "12 year old boy shot in the head walking his dog" "brick thrown at driver from motorway bridge! (all within 10 miles of us). Give me "hat blows off in strong gales" I will be less depressed.

  4. Actually, although I said we sold in two hours, it did get a bit hairy with the paperwork, there was a lot of misleading information coming between solicitors but knowing the house buying process, I knew someone was taking the .... So, after about 3 weeks, I bit the bullet and told them if they did not sign within 7 days, the deal was off.  They signed one hour before the deadline!!  I had to get some new trousers... but it was that close

  5. Hello, I don't know about secondary schools but we have our house in Morlaix, soon to be permanent.  We have visited the school for our six year olds nearby and have found them very helpful and polite.  They let them stay for a little while to get a taste and I intend putting them in a bit longer for the experience later this year.  I suppose ours are at a good age to move.  At your childrens' age, perhaps if you are really intent of moving to France, you could get them private French lessons beforehand and move where there is plenty for them to do.  Morlaix is a very pretty town with miles of beautiful beaches nearby which our kids think are fantastic.

  6.
We've been trying to sell our UK home (to move to our place in France) for over a year and a half now. Buyers pull out because of broken chains, personal reasons, fluctuating interest rates, acts of G...
We sold our house in about 2 hours and got the asking price.  Painted and decorated in neutral colours all New England style, wooden floors seem to go well.  Cream covered suites. Coffee and bread machines firing away, white curtains, fresh flowers, hanging baskets and tubs outside, newly mowed lawn.  No ornaments or pets anywhere.  Seemed to do the trick.

Can I come round and charge you about £200 for this advice??? :

  7. I thought this really interesting.  They were a lovely couple but said they did not fit in in their first neighbourhood, they spoke good French and were well integrated, I just wish they had said why they did not fit in.... I wonder in what way.  They also said "we were too friendly too soon".  Anyone throw any light on this, have I missed something?

  8. It's quite easy for people to judge a character simply by what they look like and their manner.  Sometimes we have to take people at face value because there seems little choice at the time. If you look on the TV, every day you will see people who can play a role and be somebody they are not, do you  think that people who can do this all go into acting or politics??.  So many get taken in by people who are charismatic, charming and appear intelligent.  It's human nature.  After all what would like be like if you did not trust anyone? It's too easy to say you were stupid until it happens to you.

  9. I must admit, it is a problem we had in the UK not long ago, but with a little education, people are much more aware or the health problems associated with it, although not all.

I was enjoying my garden in France, when a dog suddenly appeared in it, I looked around and saw a couple passing (bearing in mind that the garden is fairly large and he had gone right in it to make his deposit, they never called it or apologised but just walked away ha!

The same when I was talking to my neighbour in my garden, his dog just came in a pooped and he just laughed, never apologised or offered to clean it up, and I have children.

I don't think things were much different in the UK a few years ago but it's been drilled into us now how unhealthy it is.  It is just one thing one seems to have to accept for now unless you want to fall out over it which I don't.

  10. You should open a bank account but this is not necessary to transfer funds. You will be given details of the notaires account to transfer money and you should then check out the best rate for your exchange. We used our own bank as this felt more secure but you could go through say HIFX or Moneybookers and they will transfer it for you, it could be a better rate. depnds how much you change now, some or all of the final balance. It all feels very insecure I know, we did not even get a receipt from the notaire but it all worked out just fine. You should plan to have the money in the notaire's account before you arrange to sign the final Acte de Vente. We did not get a good exchange rate last year but it is looking better at the moment. You should decide now if you are going to change the whole of the money now or later and risk the pound dropping. This can all be pre booked.

    Good luck.
