1. Sorry, whilst on my box, have you read those derisory fines they give the uninsured, untaxed and don't intend to's - only a lot less than their actual insurance would have cost them.  You see a long list of them in local papers in the UK - why bother getting insurance when the fine is much less?

  2. "  If you speak to anyone at the DVLA either get them to confirm in writing (they don't like doing this) or at the very least make a note of the persons name and dept, date and time. "

Have you tried getting through? The DVLA are a bunch of imcompetents IMO. It makes me so mad having to deal with these idiots, you have to ring them when they make a mistake or ignore your letters but it does not matter to them, 'cos they win, they just send you a fine.  I have sent my export certificate from my log book and six weeks later, still not got an acknowledgement despite contacting them three times. Does anyone know if I can register my car with the prefecture without this confirmation?

  3. IME all solicitors have to have a standard complaints procedure, details of which should have been provided at the outset and a letter of appointment should have been provided, with details of the process such is my experience of a solicitor's practice.

Quite honestly however, I agree with BSLV whatsit, that £500 and a read through the papers, not much change from a London based lawyer. You should have a copy of any correspondence he sent though.

  4. When we bought our house, we arranged an interest only mortgage on top of our mortgage. As it was interest only it was reasonable as the mortgage on the house was well affordable.  We did not think we would sell our house quickly and therefore did not wish to risk losing the France purchase, when we saw what we wanted.  As luck would have it, we sold in two hours but we could never have predicted that. We then had to move into rented accommodation to get the house sorted in France.   We found many lenders willing to give us the extra mortgage and some did not even want to know what it was for as long as you have the equity on your house.

Don't give up, if you have the equity in your present house, you could get an interest only loan, for which repayments are much lower, but you have to then consider how interest rates will affect you until you sell.

I would definitely say it is not worth risking the two working together, that would be like betting on the horses in my mind, having worked for a solicitors in England and knowing the things that can and do go wrong, the system is so fragile. Georgina

  5. In a little late here, but we had the BCG before we came.   I was really pushy though at the doctors.  Kids have settled permanently here for about two months now in school, after being on long breaks here before. They are much happier.  They are both going on a skiing holiday for one week in January, - I think it's great for them, but I will be on the tranquilisers I think (what's french for give me some tranquilisers please doctor???:Good luck.

  6. Thanks everyone for all your helpful replies.  I lost the posting for a bit. Must be my computer. I think I am in the wrong part of France for decent herbs and spices. I feel a trip to the UK coming on.

  7. Thanks for that Fantine, I will definitely plant some next year.

And SB, where do you find those? I have seen only black people selling colourful clothes. Anyone know any in Finistere? I think I would travel miles, you can freeze corriander so not a problem.

  8. I was very disappointed with the fresh corriander I bought from the supermarket,  it was totally tasteless. I used to get a big bunch from the local Indian shop for about 50p, so it's hitting me hard to pay £1 for three useless bits of stalk.  Any advice you curry makers please? My curry is suffering. It needs to be fresh.

There was a spice shop opened in the town Morlaix which closed due to a dispute.  Anyone know if it opened elsewhere -   I was gutted.  The market on Saturdays does not produce anything that I have seen expect little spices in pathetic looking specimen packs and the only shop I have seen sells Chinese herbs mostly.

  9. Great, thanks, Ian and Chris.  Ian, do not apologise for your very informative response.  It was really interesting and should be used as a post it for people who buy dogs in France. I don't think I have seen this information anywhere else.

    Could I suggest this Admin???

  10. I have just bought a puppy from a proper breeder and I think I understood what she said but would like confirmation.  The puppy has been chipped and had the first set of vaccinations and she said I should get a booster in one month's time.  Can anyone advise if this is correct and what I should expect to pay for the booster.  Also what should I say at the vet, or should I just show him the book she gave me with the details of the original vaccines, it's hard to make out exactly what but it looks like the usual vaccines were given? I need to get this right before I go. Should I get the worming tablets from the vet or does anyone know if there is such a thing as a pet shop, I have not seen one?

    Any help appreciated.

  11. Thanks for all your help, I will get started shortly. Yes, I have dug all the weeds out Ron, or rather my dad did. But I expect after I get back shortly, there will be a few to take out.  The weeds I did have before had shallow roots so hopefull not too big a job.  Lettuce sounds like a good idea, I will try that and raddish.

    Happy gardening.

  12. Okay, I am really excited, I have just had my veggie patch turned over with a rotivator and rid of those horrible weeds that have been growing for about three years. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to grow some vegetables.

What can I plant and how soon that will be easy for me to start with.

  13. As a mother, I would expect that if the child behaves this way, then the parents pretty much have the problem and probably have had the problem many times before meeting your dog, resulting in embarrassing screaming moments. I would expect, if my child behaved this way, to have to deal with it myself. Otherwise, they will not be able to go anywhere really.

  14. What a shame, why do people shoot such beautiful creatures.

Could you try and put a pot cat near the window, ones you buy in garden centres? I know some are a bit naff but rather that.  Just a thought.

  15. What is going on here, dont understand...... however, having been to Spain recently, I was cringeing at the amount of English Breakfast signs, English telly signs, Get your English Footie here etc. I know I was in a touristy area, but I was thinking, could not imagine how that would go down in France or England (Spanish or other). However the Spanish seem to cope by simply ignoring you completely (can't say I blame them some parts of Spain have been taken over with English flags. My kids were literally bashed on the head with plates by the Spanish in the hotel in an attempt to get to their buffet. I was amazed at the lack of eye contact and total disregard... glad to be back in France where practically everyone says Bonjour, from the Maire  to the bin man.

  16.
Last year, 12 year old daughter and I spent the summer holidays at our house. As husband only managed to get 10 days off work to join us at the end, one of my single, childless, friends "invited" her...
I dont understand this glued purses business.  If I was privileged to stay in anyone's house free I would be buying things all the time, how much money they have saved having free accommodation, leccy and all the trimmings. What is it with these people, they think cos we moved to France we are bluddy loaded!!!

My parents are coming next week (first time) and  the only thing I asked them to bring is their own towels as we have not been here long and there is no airing cupboard, well I was astounded when they said they did not think they had enough room.

We are in for a good week!!!

    "bluddy curtain shufflers"

Yes, I recall in England ringing up a neighbour (at work) to tell her the car alarm was going off and was told off for ringing up too early (7.30am). Sometimes I think I am from another planet.  I was actually thinking I was doing her a favour so she did not get a flat battery, but no, she thought I was complaining about the noise.  I did not get a chance to explain, she just ranted at me.

    We moved.

We cannot have it both ways, you cannot have security without others looking out for you.  Personally I would not mind the neighbour knowing my business, I have nothing to hide at all. Saves paedophiles being rehoused in your street without you knowing.

  18.
Georgina, the fact we mention tolerance does not mean that everyone has to put up with dog poo everywhere, but being aggressive about it is maybe not the best way to tackle the problem. Perhaps you...
I have not been aggressive about it, what are you talking about?? Please read the posts properly.  I was asking how I could put it without "putting my foot in it". The question is what to say without causing offence.  So yes, please tell me what you would say.

As regards school, the French parents beat me to it anyhow and got it cleaned up and they already have a notice not allowing dogs near the school.

  19.
My very first post was about tolerance in France and I agree with Logan and MWJ's comments. Administrator Russethouse you surprise and disappoint me. Did you know that dogs can't read? As for poiso...
I despair!!!!! Obviously you do not have any children - do you choose to ignore the facts.  It's not the dogs that are a problem, it's the owners. I really love dogs and would not hurt them.

  20.
I enjoy living in France for many reasons. One part of that is the relaxed attitude the French have to life in general. They have a system of priorities. A inherent philosophy of what is important and...
"This thread is about doggy poo but I suspect it's really about much more than that."

Actually Logan, you are completely wrong, it is about POO.   My French neighbour told me of someone (French) who actually posted the stuff in someone's postbox.  So someone else is not that relaxed about it.

  21.
Totally disagree. I understand many people on this forum live in the countryside, but that doesn't mean that it is all country living here, far from it. I wouldn't claim to live in "the real France"...
Correct Tourangelle, I know i have to put up with it elsewhere. It's just the kids, I can even cope with the odd stray dog, it's just when people walk past knowing their dog is doing it in my garden.  They know it is not very nice, because they walk straight past.  I am not talking about the odd one by the way, the other day I cleaned up 5!!!

I do not wish to impose my values on the French people at all but I think I put the safety of my children before anyone or anything, as I am sure do the majority of the French.  My poor friend (French) has to put up with this in the playarea of where she lives. It is covered in it.

Having been educated as to the potential problems caused by the stuff, I cannot immediately undo it.

I have decided that I shall just say "shoo" in future (to the dog not the French). Or would they be offended by this?
