  1. Hi all, my dad has just got a new Dell PC with XP home edition OS.

Hes subscribed to Wanadoo and I cant set up the blooming Outlook Express to send/receive emails.  I can connect to the net OK but Outlook tells me "cannot find server" or maybe "server isnt responding, try in 90 seconds" - ive changed the server timeout thingy but it doesnt make any difference.  Ive checked all the elements of the account are entered correctly which I think it is (with my poor grasp of IT).

Anything jump out at anyone as to why this could be? Or does anyone know of a PC man to visit your homes in Dept 35?

    Thanks.

  2. Hi all, we have a sat dish and sky box and have just been given a second box which we would like to set up to run both boxes from the single dish but to watch different channels on each. I note from your comments above Ron that you need an "LNB" - can you get them in France or do you need to get one from the UK.  Is there anything else we would need.  Along with the second box we were given another smaller box which has on the front of it "CGV Moduline Twin" and 4 buttons marked 1, 2, +, -        does anyone know what this box is for?

    Thanks.

  3. Hi, we have a house in Brittany which is our second home at the moment.  We have a business in Jersey (stonemasonry).  My other half is going to do the renovation on our house over here - it needs a lot of work - he will do the building himself but we will need to get in a plumber/leccy etc.  He needs a spare pair of hands to help him and we are toying with who to get.  My uncle comes and stays with us sometimes and he is a fantastic odd job man however it might be a bit much for him as hes no spring chicken.  Obviously cost is an issue.  I have read the threads on casual labour being illegal but how would you go about employing someone over here to help out, say, 15 hours a week?  Or could we employ someone from Jersey and feed and accommodate them for a reduced salary.  How would we employ them legally (as they will not be French residents)?  Could we do it through our Jersey company?

    Any comments appreciated.

    Thanks.

  4. Keep em coming ... keep em coming .... this is great. Thanks folks for all the suggestions.  I am of the opinion that Im not going to find a similar substitute and not being an anglo foodie (ie. my cupboards are full of french food, not english), I will no doubt have to moderate my taste around to a french equivalent.  As one of you said, although it is possible to find a full bodied French red, most other than the very expensive will be harder than the New World versions.  I agree that Cahors and Minervois are full bodied and gutsy, have not tried the Hermitages but will.  I bought a Chilean Cab Sav the other day ..... yuck! vinegar!

Its a case of hitting on something that suits you isnt it.  Rest assured, I will search high and low!

  5. JP Bladet sounds familiar ... I will investigate .... is the Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage?  Its a Cote du Rhone isnt it?

Since posting this it has occurred to me that a little tripette to a wine cave might be the go ... there is a big one in St Malo i see and no doubt numerous others, some of which can be visited in time .... ooh I feel a little fun on its way!

    Keep the suggestions coming folks....

    Thanks,

    Mandy

  6. Hi folks, it has occurred to me that possibly the only things I miss from the UK are fresh cream and Shiraz wine.  The cream is no big deal, but the wine, well thats another story.  I have tried and tried to find a French alternative but I cant (Minervois seems the closest) ... any suggestions ... I like my wine as dark inky purple as possible, the fuller bodied the better, smooth and strong!  All suggestions enthusiastically tried out!

    Bon Annee!

  7. Hello all, friends of mine are looking into availability of accommodation for next June (end of) for about 6 couples and their assorted children.  Must be exclusive, ie. a huge villa, or a gite complex entirely for them etc.  Also must have swimming pool.  Not too far south from ferry ports in North.

If you have anything you think might suit please let me know.

    thanks.

  8. Hi, we have an old house which has a large moving crack on the front and we are trying to get someone to come and have a look at it to see what is causing it.  We have had an architect down but he said that surveyors in France arent really called in to look at problems and give you an idea of the cause of the problem as they are in the UK.

Can anyone recommend anyone to go to who is an expert in this type of thing.  My partner is a stonemason and has a very good idea of what is causing it and will do repair works himself but he wants a second opinion from someone who has experience with old stone & clay french houses, not really an English surveyor.

    Thanks.

  9. Hi folks,  the certificate d'urbanisme we had when we bought our property has expired (2.5 years old) ... when we bought the place we bought direct through a notaire but the notaire was located miles away from us which we thought was strange at the time.  Anyway now that we need to get a new certificate prior to lodging a permis construire for renovations. I am wondering if we need to go back to the original notaire for a new certificate d'urbanisme or if we can go to a notaire locally and get them to do it???  I would prefer to go to a local notaire as we also want to get wills made up etc.

    Thanks for replies.

  10. Hi Cally,

Hope you are all well up there in Villedieu .... we are still hectic and all over the place - Jody has made the break and has just practically moved over to France!  I am now the breadwinner in Jersey - im temping at the old place I used to work.  Its a bit of a pain with Bosley etc but its a means to an end.  Just a bit longer.

Anyway, I think a plant/produce swap is a great idea.  I have 2 weeks holiday the last 2 weeks of September but wont be around the first week of october ... however i think its a great idea and something that could perhaps be organised on a regular basis.

I would also like to see the ACTAP or whatever they are called's events to be advertised too.

I will keep my eye open to see when/where it happens and maybe send Jody up.  We have loads of eggs.  We are going to be getting rabbits soon adn also ordering some pigs for next year which is exciting!

    Love to Sam and Lucyxx

  11. Hi CJ,
I am a new(ish) mum in Dept 35 Brittany so its a bit far away from you .... i have thought about getting together a group of mums and babies however we are not living here permanently just yet .... hope to be soon tho. There is a good website www.babycentre.co.uk where they have a section on Parents in France and I suggest you post a message on there as there is a good response and might be someone living right near you ....

Good luck with the new arrival!!

  12. Hi, if you receive the AAH (allocation adult handicappe) are there any other allowances available (ie. carer's allowance (for family member unable to work because has to look after handicapped person) or transport allowance) etc etc?
    Thanks.
  13. We live in a rural area of Brittany (Ille-et-Vilaine). We are about 2 kms from our village and have 10 hectares of land. We bought 2.5 years ago and at the time land was getting hard to find, i think now it is more so. Our farm has 2 neighbours who we can see but a stream and lots and lots of trees divide us and we are never aware of them being there, they are about 500m - 750m away ... apart from, for example, when one came round to tell us that one of our sheep was injured and helped us get her in to a stable etc etc. We really didnt want any neighbours but with hindsight i think its quite a good thing. It can feel bleak here at times, especially in the winter and you are on your own in this huge place, its nice to know someone is there should you need them. I do not have experience of horses but would imagine that the amount of tractors that frequent the little lanes that surround properties like ours (it being a rural area, that is still farmed) might be a problem.
  14. Hi all, can anyone give me step-by-step version of how to register as a self-employed stonemason here in Brittany.

    Im thinking ....

    1. Visit Chambre de Metiers.

    2. Follow their instructions.

Any other advice????? Need to find out whether its best to be a micro enterprise or not.

    Thanks.
