  1. I have just had a quote of around €1300 to supply the electricity cable and compteur to the edge of my building plot, 20 mètres of cabling but because the house is more than 30mètres from the compteur EDF will not connect to the house, this has to be done by an electrician circa €2000 plus the cost of the trench and gaine.

If EDF needed to extend the network cable it would be much more than this and could take around 6 months.

Water and mains sewage connection add another €4-5000. If you don't know about these cost in advance it could come as a bit of a shock.[:)]

  2. Can someone give me some advice on how to overwinter my Bougainvillea? I am in SW France, south of Bergerac. I don't yet have a greenhouse or anywhere I can put them inside for the winter (waiting for the house to be built).

    Thanks

  3. Here is a translation from my Translator changing some of the English words. In any language translator you really need to think about how you can write a sentence simply and without ambiguity.

Thanks, I guess so.  It's just that when I tried to make a car hire booking and put in return time 8.00am, it wouldn't let me proceed with the booking, just saying Bergerac Airport was closed at that time.  I never had this problem when hiring from Toulouse and returning on an early flight.

Change the return time to 9.30 the computer will never know[:)]

  5. "In fact why exactly do I still pay for a French account?"

Because you still need a French account to Pay in the withdrawals[:)]. I have been using the Nationwide withdrawal/deposit thing for some years now, and it works fine, if you don't need a large sum quickly.

  6. Depending on where you live, you may or may not need a termite inspection, you will need asbestos and lead reports the termite inspection if required, is only valid for 3 months, the others I believe are valid for 12 months, however the inspector will usually come back and do an update for free or a small extra charge.

I paid recently in the Lot et Garonne for all three tests on a 2 storey house 140sq m €500

  7. I think the term you want is Terre Vegetal, and can be supplied from the people who do excavations and site clearance also available from some builders merchants.

I read an article recently which included some interesting information: Saga, Primary insurance, Nationwide building society, Lloyds TSB, help the aged and Churchill do not have a limit on the time spent abroad and cover for driving abroad is automatically included.

Also, I have just spoken to Churchill and they do not even ask whether the vehicle is LHD, it does not affect the premium!!

If you remain UK resident then no problems, when I told Saga that i was now resident in France they would not renew my policy, because the insurance was only available to UK residents.

It pays to read the small print.

  9. "someone may tell me that I need a triple heart bypass.. Therefore and after some soul-searching does one just go for the maximum amount and content in the knowledge that if it does happen your have the man in the wardrobe. "

And If you did have this type of life threatening illness you would almost certainly be covered by CPAM 100%, you have to weigh up the pro's and cons.

  10. "Be aware that any trailer over a certain weight limit, typically car trailers or larger 4 wheeled braked goods ones, must carry their own carte grise. Trying to register a U.K. purchased one could well be as difficult as registering a caravan."

Any trailer over 500kg laden weight (PTAC) must be registered and have it's own registration document and number plate.

  11. The reason why Durum wheat is used in pasta production comes from the fact that the grain of the Durum wheat is hard. This property relates to the gluten content which provides elasticity to the dough.

Most of the Durum wheat used in pasta production in the UK comes from the south of France and Italy, as the climate in the UK is not suitable for its growth.

  12. No the air con has no effect on the battery but it does cause an extra load to be placed on the alternator and engine speed, if the normal tick over speed at rest, is set a little too low, the engine can cut out when you come off the accelerator to carry out a slow speed manoeuvre.
