  1. . Whilst BBC HD has been available to satellite viewers in the UK it has also been/is available in France via FreeSat, without subscription, or via Sky with a subscription. What we are now discussing is the fact that BBC will start transmitting more programmes, and on BBC1. The existing HD channel will continue with it's mix of BBC2,3,4 and CBeebies etc.
  2. At the moment BBC HD channel broadcasts a mix of programmes, not necessarily at the same time of broadcast on BBC1 for example. If there is sport on ,programmes like Antiques Road Show will go out on Monday rather than the Sunday as on BBC1 From the autumn BBC HD channel will extend it;s broadcasting hours from 9 to 12 hours a day. With BBC1 going digital, the HD channel will broadcast programmes from BBC2,3 4 and children's channels.
  3. Try this for an onion salad;

Served with popadoms together with yoghurt mint sauce.

    2 cooking onion

    1 Tomato

    Half inch(1cm) piece cucumber

    generous pinch salt

    pinch red chilli powder

    1 teaspoon lemon juice

    2 teaspoons mint sauce

Finely chop onions, tomato and cucumber to produce thin strips. Place in a bowl and add remaining ingredients.Mix thoroughly.
  4. Same with me. Can't understand why they do not send out the forms you submitted the previous year, I downloaded mine. See the French tax FAQ at the start of this forum section.
  5. I am inclined to agree that inspection/classification is not compulsory. However, as with many things in France, not everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet. A friend of mine went to his mairie with the forms I had downloaded for him off the net. They produced a different version, completed the receipt, told him he would have to take tax de sejour and off he went. At another mairie,(both in the same department) they are insisting on inspection!
  6. What I am suggesting is a little more in line with the current UK system, There would still be a single MP representing a constituency. After the first round the top two candidates in each constituency would go through to the next round. Whilst there would be a week when you would not know who your MP is, you should end up with a party with a clear majority. I certainly don't want a presidential election, although with the TV debates some would like to suggest that is the way the UK is heading. More expensive perhaps, but in the long run less expensive in having a second election later in the year which now seems likely.
  7. Whilst I agree with what you say, there was certainly a section of the electorate that following events including the expenses scandal etc expressed opinions via surveys that indicated either voting for the more obscure parties or a feeling that a government of national unity would be the answer for now. Not an opinion I subscribe to.

At times I have thought some form of proportional reform necessary, but hypocrite that I am, I am not sure I am ready for all that democracy brings. On the results from last week, I understand the BNP would have had 6 seats for instance.

Maybe the French have it right ito a degree.. Voting on 2 weeks, the first often throws up the dissenting voices and then usually a clear leader on the second vote.
  8. From an interview on TVAM last week, he intends leaving politics and going into charity work. I am somewhat perplexed by the pundits on television tonight talking of "unelected prime ministers". In the UK there is no presidential election(despite the TV debates?). The voter votes for his MP, the party elects it's leader.

There have been many cases where Prime Ministers change during the life of a Parliament., eg John Major, Alex Douglas Hume etc.

The people of Britain, it is said wanted a "hung parliament" and this is what they are going to get.
  9. You would think this would be such a simple standard matter. My envelope B was the bottom half of a form needing my date of birth and signature. This was to be detached and placed with the voting form in envelope A . The envelope B was pre printed with the necessary address, stamped, but I paid French postage-much to the amusement of the French postal clerk.
  10. This morning the picture on our television disappeared and a message indicating that a search for new channels and I think software updates was being made. After a few minutes I decided it had froze. I switched the box off and then back on and got the channel back.Thinking I would look for any updated I went into menu, freesat tune, was asked for my postcode, put it that which I had registered previously and after a search was told the postcode could not be recognised. Is there any way Freesat are able to ascertain where the box is installed?I have managed to get my channels back, but I am curious.
