1. Hi Jasper,

Hope you find something...if not give me a shout, I'll be spending as much time as work allows in the hills and mountains of the south this spring & summer I guess another bod or two could be fun, although I sleep rough and don't come down for meals. What fitness level are you at?

  2. It is big though Twinks! You fancy roping down it? It'd be nice to be in one place long enough to have the time to post....off to other parts for a few weeks this eve and then headed down your way or to the Med after that so it'd better be warm!
  3. You do yourself a disservice JJ...ten minutes and I'd be wondering how it could be done with chainsaw!

Yep, one step at a time...this wee range is comfortably devoid of humankind this time of year...

.....and this weird looking structure is great for training, up and down the stairs two at a time and twice, gets people wondering if you're having a coronary. I've now developed an unhealthy obsession with wanting to abseil it...it's gotta be worth the jailtime just for the memory! Only trouble is sneaking the gear past security!

  4. Whoa, there's more...the crack of willow on leather as the batsmen puts the ball over the boundary rope...the unmistakable roar of a Spitfire as it scythes through the air gracefully and proudly...the centuries of history behind the lone Piper as he honours his fallen friends on some godforsaken faraway windswept hill...Horlicks...TVR...the faces of old warriors as they listen once more to The Last Post on remembrance day...Amanda Burton...
  5. Hang on...I found a few things that seem to be unusual here, perhaps it's my British upbringing (actually I'm English before I get lumped in with the Jocks, Taffs & Micks) I'm the first to give my seat up on public transport for someone less able than myself and I hold open doors for people and help old folk when I can! All's not lost!
  6. Could someone define what UK culture is for me? What am I supposed to think, feel or do? Revel in the 'glory' of the past or be proud of tea and digestives or perhaps point out the splendour of the Houses of Parliament and just how quaint are thatched cottages!

I have a great debt of gratitude to those who gave their lives in combat in various campaigns but other than that, what's being British all about? Beats the hell out of me. I personally don't really give a stuff about the country. My Polish copine who has been in France for 20 plus years is horrified by my attitude, she guards her traditions and heritage with a vengeance..."but you're British" she says. Uh huh...I say.

  7.
I have a feeling this is what Archant will say - but there's no way we would be able to promote it on the forum.
Oh yes we would since none of us would be making a profit from it, and we don't know what Archant will say. In my limited experience of life "no" can usually be turned to "yes" sooner or later![6]

  8. Nice one Pink!

This is ANOTHER request for help with comms to Archant, life is turning ballistic here at the mo...even if someone with more experience of these sorts of approaches and better literacy than I have could PM a draft of the request...there's no point in getting this far and not going further with it!

Wow, Bourrut, you joined in 2005 with only 1 post!!  I bet Ron Avery will love you [Www] [:D]

Good shout, come on then, who is Mr/Miss January?  Put your money where your mouth is.
That's cool JK, Bourrut might be either really shy or just into peeking at naked nutters?

Seeing as no one has volunteered to contact Archant I'll do it...erm, any ideas who to send the message to? I'm moving in the next four or five days & it'll take a couple of weeks give or take to get adsl sorted so someone will have to agree to help out with comms.

  10. A really interesting thread.

One of the most important aspects is time.

The very fact that you're in your twenties means that you have time on your side Hollie but the downsidesare many and have been well covered already? Unless you both already have language skills it's (in my opinion) one of the most important aspects along with actively integrating here. This in itself is quite a task and not doing so is a trap many fall into when embarking on their renovation projects. I know of several people who have concentrated solely on working on their projects and neglected the social aspect of being here, to their cost when something goes wrong and they need to approach authorities/suppliers etc.

Another important aspect is the effect on your relationship and the sheer weight of responsibility of such a project. Diving headfirst into the unknown (I love doing it myself but my sanity has always been questionable) can have serious effects on individual and joint morales once the enormity of the task and the full realities of renovation become apparent. The cost to relationships can be quite steep, the failure rate amongst expats is significant...yes I'm one of them.

Bp's approach is spot on, mental attitude can overcome most hurdles, coupled with knowledge of ones own limitations and total honesty between yourselves could turn your ambitions into your dream...going in with blinkers on could be very costly on many fronts.

So....do your homework carefully, talk about it until the cows come home and see where you end up!

    The very best of luck.

Strikes me, Colonel Head, that you should be applying for the position of Head of the Cadet Force.

Our gals look quite fetching in their kharkis.

The Academy, in the South West of course, is in a chateau not unlike Colditz.  So provided you don't train the gals to feign mental illness (something that they tell me is my affliction), you are duly appointed, Colonel Head.

Are you any good at jumping out of aircraft?
I seem to specialise in getting into trouble so being a Colonel is out...it's only too fair I pass on my extensive experience to the young! As for jumping out of an aeroplane, wouldn't it be better to wait for the thing to land first?

Missy; I think you're mistaking the type of establishment, it's a school not a knocking shop![:D]

Boy there's going to be some confused kids leaving this school!
