  1. Agree with JJ, you can cut mortices in different ways Dick, quickly and accurately without spending out on a dedicated machine. If you're splashing out howz about a Woodrat? Apparently they're fantastic machines but I reckon you need a degree to use one! Another MUST is a Tormek, OK it'll hurt the credit card but boy does it do what it says on the label. I'm slightly envious of the bandsaw JJ, never had one but it'd be a godsend. Got any spare meds there buddy? Mine must be wearing off, the woodwork is drawing me back to it inexplicably.
  2. That's pretty intricate work Dick, you're doing it just by hand? I've ten or so drawers to make (half blind dovetails with the help of my mate Leigh!) and wouldn't even contemplate doing them by hand, good luck!
  3. That bench is weathering really nicely now despite many attempts from the commune to slap some 'stuff' on it, I told them I'd cut it up and take it away if they did. Still haven't had time to mail you Sandra!

  4. About time you retired isn't it Dick? It's a shame to let work get in the way of all those projects! Erm, up to lots of things, carving, making furniture, starting a kitchen this week (Shaker and I'm not copying) and have recently been climbing and felling quite alot, including some magnificent old Oaks...oh and travelling. Good to see you progressing.
  5. Looks good Dick, how many hours of finishing have you got in the piece? I'm a convert to hard wax oil, cut between coats with 0000 and matted down if the sheen is too much the finish is superb. Three coats are easily adequate, four is some serious protection. Nice work, what's next?

  6. Lizzy, perhaps you could approach your projects from a different viewpoint. If you haven't already got in mind what it is you want to do you can do the research in magazines or on the net for ideas. Making furniture is obviously dependant on joining wood together, it's the joints that are important, I would suggest you find a few books on joints and take it from there. Carpentry isn't dissimilar to creating a meal or making music, once you understand the basic ingredients of food or notes of music you can put them to use in a variety of ways to suit your own interpretation of what it is you want to achieve...the same goes for creating furniture, understand some basic joints and you can use them in a variety of ways on different projects. Good luck.
  7. Yeah I guess the place was a bit odd Moggy, probably why the nice police folk had their hands resting on their Glocks all the time, I think it was Poland or Ukraine. Should've taken Sniperkitty along!

Hi Coops, who cares if it leaks? It's the look that counts...doin' good thanks.

Blue tack Pat, it works wonders, be a shame if someone flicked a fag butt up there though.

  8. If you do get hold of what you want Postie, be very careful that you're not bringing woodboring insects into your house, the bark and sapwood on 'waney' edged timber is ideal habitat for the wee critters.
  9. Jon, it really isn't that easy to make a half decent living if you're legit and don't want to work silly hours to get by. The successful ones seem to be those who have good financial discipline, low outgoings, marketable skills and the tenacity to keep going and not get dogged down by the admin

By the way, I reckon you've handled this wee forum scrap pretty well, I'm impressed!

  10. Come to think of it maybe the booze does play a part? Since cutting it out 9 months ago & completely changing diet there's been no problems this winter...there has to be longer term alternatives than remedial drugs? Losing weight, change of repetetive movements, diet change etc will all play their part. I'm certainly aware of weak spots, fingers, elbows and knees from climbing and other high impact stuff over the years and have changed the stuff that made it hurt, it takes discipline and consistency though.
  11. Thankyou Clair and what are you after Leo? I see the two Welsh Wenches are still causing trouble...what's up with the weather here? It was warm in the Tatry mountains last week when it shouldn't have been and winter here when it should've been Spring by now...weird.
  12. Afterwards, would the soldiers have felt any remorse?

The 'soldiers' who pulled the trigger wouldn't have had very much choice, had they countermanded direct orders in the field they would have got the good news themselves, they cannot be blamed any more so can the monkey who dances to the organ grinder...if he doesn't dance he's not going to be around long either. It's the politicians who need to be held accountable, then as now. It happened and it's finished.
