  1. Hello helpful people,

One day in April our heating/cooling ceased to function. Because of COVID 19 we had to wait weeks for a technician to come. Since last week we have a new PCB, which, including work, came to more than € 1700. I tried putting in an insurance claim, but unless there was a lightning strike on that day in April, they won’t consider it. So is there a site somewhere that can help me? I tried tutiempo but it doesn’t have data for 2020. Thank you.
  2. We lunched at our favourite local restaurant today. View of the Med and a capsized catamaran being righted. Twice! Henry dog loves going there too and is greeted by name and served with a dish of water.

We felt totally secure. All the staff were wearing masks or visors and nobody was close enough to breathe on us.

It was a huge step back to normality. I feel lifted.

I’m sure there are some of you who would think this was risky behaviour. We did not.

  3. Cannes does help, of course. Daily walk with dog Henry, but not on the Croisette. Occasional interrogation by police officers. Not many people about. I feel very cut off from family. One daughter in Gothenburg, one in London and one in Rome plus a son in Holland. I miss the knowledge that we are only a flight away from any of them, and they from us. We Skype and WhatsApp, but as you all know, it’s not the same.

    Thank you for listening.

  4. Trying hard, but seem to have lost control. I’ve grown my own tights; had a go at a beard, but only managed one white hair. And as for the hair on my head - think dandelion clock ready to blow away plus a husband waving scissors at me, and you’ve got the rather unpleasant picture. Have I lost my self respect? Should I pull my holey socks up? Make more of an effort?

I really am trying. Keep safe.

  5. Google QNI and you will find the following:

Kälin and Kochenov’s Quality of Nationality Index (QNI) is the first index of its kind to objectively rank the quality of nationalities worldwide. It explores both the internal factors (such as economic strength, human development, and peace and stability) and the external factors (including visa-free travel and the ability to settle and work abroad without cumbersome formalities) that make one nationality better than another in terms of a legal status through which to develop your talents and business.

So no, it’s not French people claiming top spot for themselves. It’s based on objective criteria, although I’ve no idea who K & K are. More Googling required.

  6. Whoops, missed it! Is there somewhere I can catch up? Summer Night Concert from Vienna is still on our hard disc, and I watch bits of that now and then. It reminds me of how hot we were back then.

  7. Wonderful. Thank you for posting the link.

Coincidentally a Jehovah’s Witness called in the middle of the video. I declined her kind offer of a discussion. And now I’m behind with the mince pies.

    Bonnes fêtes tout le monde.

  8. I’ve now read La Place, but much too fast! I was enjoying it so much, I couldn’t stop. I’ve now started again, but much more carefully and analytically. I think it’s a book you could read time and time again and find something new every time.

I’m saving Les Années for quieter times.

    Thank you, Mint.
  9. Last September some kind people on this forum helped me identify the high-flying, fast-talking birds in the sky over our house in the Var, winging their way to warmer climes.

I'm sure summer must finally be on the way as the bee eaters started to fly back last week-end.

    Regards, Angela
