  1. If you have a new-ish house, the earth may be taken to the bottom of the foundation trench, with a wire laid along the bottom of the trench rather than a rod. It's a good system if you have it, but it's obviously not a good wheeze for renovations.
  2. Just getting back to the original point for a moment:

We have a SAAB 95 Estate 2.2TID. It functions pretty well at 70 mph / 40 mpg but push it and the consumption rockets. Back off to 60 mph and we go up to 42-45 mpg, but it's very boring. I spend a lot of time putting the roof rack on and taking it off again (+/- 2 mpg or so), and keeping the aircon off unless really necessary.
  3. If you are buying as a holiday home consider how far you want to go to get to it. It is not a good idea to assume that low-cost airlines will always run to where you want to go, and even ferries rise and fall according to demand. We have had a res. secondaire in Manche for 15 + years and we went there because we could rely on good transport links, and we go regularly ... nearly every month. But you also have to remember that Manche is not that far South and there are very good reasons why the countryside is lush and green ...
  4. Cap Finistere now tested. As expected, she's low on sitting space as she's obviously designed for overnight crossings with plenty of cabins. A nice bar area with lots of seats aft, totally ruined by insidious vibration that will knock your teeth out, and the inevitable muzak ...
  5. Some of the passenger numbers in the winter would have fitted onto a Sunseeker, but what would we have done with the car ?

Not surprised Sunseekers are not selling well. I would have thought that those plastic gin-palaces were the preserve of (b)ankers and MPs
  6. The problem with BARFLEUR (and the Poole run) was that it was very undersubscribed in the winter. Sometimes there was only a handful of passengers tippy-toeing around so as not to disturb the crew. She hadn't got enough cabin accommodation to put on the Spain run.
  7. I observe that Brittany Ferries have now published details of the Cap Finistere ex Superfast V. The information is a bit hazy as to what seating will be available. It looks a bit as though there will not be too much in the way of reclining seats. Anybody out there know any more ?
