  1. Hi,

your TV Set must use the PAL standard and not the SECAM standard of French TVs. Some newer TV Sets are multi standard and can take signals from either PAL or SECAM. The use of a SCART lead to connect rather than the RF won't help you get colour pictures.

If you are interested I have a SECAM to PAL decoder that connects to the decoder scart output on analogue sat receivers and will convert the SECAM feed to PAL for your English TV. For a few quid and postage etc I'll post it on to you.

Send me a private message thingy to my inbox here if you are interested.

  2. one reason you find such cheap CDs in supermarkets is that the recordings may have had their copyright sold to A N Other company who capitalise on this outlay by trying to shift the units on low margins.

Another thing to watch for are the origin of the recordings. Often they will not be the studio classic you knoe but a radio broadcast or live performance.

  3. hi,

there's plenty to do around Caen. The castle has a  good arts museum, the abbeys are interesting and like mentioned before the Memorial is well worth the time to visit. There are also lots of D-Day sites to visit - Pegasus Bridge at Ranville etc.

I am a bit biased but Ouistreham and the coast is worth a visit altho' can be a bit blowy this time of year.

Hope you enjoy your time there

  4. Thanks for the tip off about ferrysales.com - I had nearly forgotten them in all the euphoria surrounding Speedferries.

We are looking to travel out on the 22nd and back on the 27th over Christmas so might combine both companies and still have change out of £50!

Will - interested in your report on the Newhaven-Dieppe route - we used that route a few times and found it a good option for Normandie. Will Transmache use the Hoverspeed fastcraft fleet or the their traditional vessels?

    regards

  5. hi Gay,

When in Ouistreham I am rarely an early riser so not sure if there are any places open when the boat pulls in - about 6.30am I believe?

Your best bet would probably be to head for Caen - about 15 minutes and find a cafe in the city - there are many and those close to a market will be open early. www.ville-caen.fr has details of what markets are on , what days and where.

I think you are wise not to travel just now - in our experience storms are more likely now than late November and we have experienced some horrible October crossings (13 hours in one case).

    Regards

  6. There are a few places to chose from in Ouistreham Riva Bella. I would recommend Les Tisons as a good restaurant altho' no accomodication but Le Chalet is just a few metres away. As my mother in law lives in the Town we have never had the need to try out the hotels but I would be interested to hear about your experiences as we may need to recommend a place to family/friends one day.

    Try looking here http://www.ville-ouistreham.fr/OT_Hebergement.asp?typ=HOTRE too.

One problem may be that some places aren't open out of season as Ouistreham Riva Bella is a bit seasonal.

The Blohaus bunker is worth a visit - it's the tall concrete structure on your right you see when arriving in the port - as is the Commando museum and the falme memorial.

Wherever you stay and eat I hope you enjoy your time there!

    Regards

  7. Our daughter has dual nationality. I'm British, my wife French and our daughter was born in the UK.

She is currently added to my UK passport - although she won't be when I renew it early next year - and and she has a French ID card from the Consulate in London.

What I am not sure on is whether she has to choose a nationality when she reaches 18 or whatever. Anyone out there any ideas?

  8. Just got home from a great weekend in and around Hardelot - Hotel du Parc - well recommended.

Speedferries were fine on Saturday AM - left Dover on time, the Captain was very reassuring about the slightly choppy seas and all in all very pleasant.

Came back on the 1730 today  - check in said we had a 30 minute delay - turned out to be 45/50 mins but once on board the captain advised that the delay was due to the late morning sailing from Dover having to wait outside Boulogne port for an hour and a half as a suicide had occurred when somebody drove off the Quay ansd into the dock! Not at all pleasant but hardly the fault of Speedferries (altho' some pompous woman did complain to the crew!!)

I would still recommend Speedferries and hope to use them again - altho' may revert to the Tunnel for our Xmas crossing - and I hope they expand and continue to provide a truly alternative service to P&P and Sea France.

  9. I have nothing but praise for Speedferries.

We used them for the first time at the start of August. The ferry was delayed at Dover by 30 minutes but we were kept informed by staff. On the return - lst Wednesday in slightly choppy seas - the ferry left 10 minutes early, it coped well with the sea conditions, and was only held up 5-10 minutes docking at Dover by a delayed Norfolkline ferry.

When travelling by sea you MUST build in time for delays as they are highly likely. And as for travelling on the M25 - delays are highly inevitable!

The boat was clean, the crew pleasant and helpful and overall it was a very good value service for just £88. Even adding petrol and toll charges from Boulogne to Normandy we saved at least £300-£400 on the Brittany Ferries price - money that paid a weeks Gite rent!

  10. Dear All - I wonder if anyone can help me?

We are staying in a gite for a couple of weeks which has a phone line but we can't call out directly and run up a phone bill for the owner.

I was wondering if France Telecom (or A N Other telco) sell prepaid cards which you prefix some form of number to your normal ISP (Wanndoo in Fr) phone number with so you can connect to the net?

Anyone know of any options here?

    Hi,
the parking at the front of the terminal seems busier than ever since P&O started their service. If I were you I'd park onstreet nearby near some occupied houses under a street light. I would recommend my mother in law's boulevard but it's prone to 80 seater coaches passsing through this time of year and they eat door mirrors!!

    hope this helps

www.rtl.fr has a number of radio channels to listen to. You may need a reasonably fast internet connection to listen comfortably.

    hope this helps

your other option would be to listen online but you really need a fast internet connection for this to be viable and comfortable.
