  1. Hi - can anyone recommend a cattery in Dept. 22, preferably near Lannion or Morlaix? Jennifer
  2. I read up before about the type of legal arrangement for the marriage and that it's important when buying a house. Sorry I can't remember any of the phrases etc. now but can someone help? We have already signed the compromis on our house and I'm wondering if I should've checked this before? Thanks Jennifer
  3. No answers sorry but just wanted to send you my sympathies, we lost the first house we were buying (for different reasons) and it was a horrible time. Hope things work out for you. Jennifer
  4. We're Welsh and have been going to Brittany for many years, we've often found that we are given a greater welcome than when French people think we are English. But I have never been called 'English' as opposed to 'British' so much as when I'm talking to British expats and French people. When inputting our details into the French Estate Agents computer the option was 'Angleterre' not 'Grande Bretagne' and we had to ask for Pays De Galles to be typed in, the Agent said oh yes I suppose it is and especially as you are "proud Welsh" (the Agent was English btw). We also have some very close friends who are English expats in France and they keep calling us English despite knowing we are Welsh, force of habit I guess - I might be forced to get a T Shirt soon ;) Jennifer
  5. We didn't receive anything else with our compromis so as far as I know it's 'normal'. I requested and had a copy of the plan cadastralle faxed over to me within a few days though. Jennifer
  6. Can I register with any Dr in France that I want to? i.e. can I pick an English speaking Dr. that's outside the area where I live? and what's the best way of locating an English speaking Dr? Thanks Jennifer
  7. I'm just about to place an order with Amazon (for 'Harrup's French Verbs' and 'Almost French') - anyone got any other recommendations for me fiction or non-fiction on : France generally Brittany particularly Books on Learning to speak French Thanks!
  8. we are buying a house which is empty, we are due to sign l'acte authentique on 15th September but we would like to move the date forward by a couple of weeks (I've been told this can be difficult). If that's not possible does anyone know if gaining access to the house to store our furniture might be? or can we pay a nominal rent until we have signed (if the vendor is willing of course).
  9. Does anyone know if it's cheaper to put furniture in storage in France or the UK? Thanks
  10. Sorry I know the answers must be in the archives somewhere but I searched and just got more confused about this!! We are moving to France hopefully by the end of this year. We will be bringing our UK car with us and intend registering it in France. Our UK Mot and road tax are due now - I guess we only buy road tax for 6mths but our insurance is due for renewal just before we plan to leave the UK. Please could someone tell me what we need to do, the most cost effective way of registering the car in France, i.e. should we wait as we will have just paid out for UK Insurance or do it immediately? We will have an address in the UK. This might sound daft but we have a 'Cymru' sticker on the car - do we leave that on once it's registered in France and we are French residents or do we then put a French sticker on it when we return to the UK? Never really thought about whether the stickers denote nationality or residency before! Thanks in advance
  11. Anyone know how precise the date giving on the compromis de vente for singing l'acte authentique tend to be?
  12. Lovely news & well done to your daughter
  13. We will be moving to France soon although I will have a UK address that I will use for business correspondence etc. I have a small internet based business - how long can I stay registered and paying tax/NI in the UK before I'd need to change over to registering in France? The plan is that my husband would be contributing in France via the savings we would be drawing an income from. These are just our current thoughts, so all advice etc. welcome
  14. Could someone clarify for me the difference between B&B and Chambres D'Hotes? Thanks
  15. We will be taking our 2 cats over to France - will they travel with us (in their carriers) on the Ferry or will they be held somewhere else? Or if we travel by the Chunnel I guess they can just travel in the car with us?
  16. I heard that there were going to be flights from Bristol to Saint Brieuc in the near future - does anyone know if this is true? Thanks
  17. We are moving to Northern Brittany by the end of this year with our 6yr old and 2yr old. My older little girl is very sensitive and she is anxious about going to school in France and not knowing the language. I don't speak French yet and my husband is learning. Does anyone have any reassuring stories for me/her. Also she is Welsh speaking - how widely is Breton used in the schools? I think someone told me before that some of the schools taught through the Breton language? Thanks - hope someone can help
  18. What's the cheapest way to transfer money from our UK Bank Account to one in France? Thanks
  19. We have signed the promis de vente. What checks on boundaries will the Notaire carry out? There is a shared lane at the side of the house plus the garden is significantly narrower at one end than the other which I'm a little concerned about. Thanks
