  1. Holiday over - used 3 hotels, and had no real problem with the dog, apart from the lifts - she didn't like them.

Stayed in Hotel Jaime 1 in Castellon part of the Sercotel group. Very good and inexpensive. The Ibis budget was ok - a bit basic but cheap.

The hotel in France was part of the Logis de France and was the most expensive.

Used www.booking.com for the 2 Spanish hotels and the Logis site for the French one.

  2. We're in the process of putting our house in 36 on the market.  It is already on with one agent & another has been to visit & is coming again to take pictures etc.  How different to the UK where the agent comes, views - values - takes pictures and within 2 days everything is on their website plus others.  Here it takes about 2-3 weeks before anything happens.

With regard to value - we are aware that the market has declined, but as others have stated, we bought, did some work and have had some good times.  The children have become bored with the house - was ok when the grandchildren were younger but now we're too remote.

We know how much we'd like to achieve and will be happy with that - anything above will be a bonus. So until that time, we'll just keep coming and staying for a few months at a time and enjoy the peace & calm.

  3. I believe this was subject of a previous thread or I may have read a review elsewhere. I agree with Racebear02 - I bought the book second-hand and couldn't put it down.  It is now doing the 'rounds' of my friends in my U3A French conversation group in the UK.

  4. We've (rather my dog) has found 5 kittens in a hedge in the garden.  We've seen the mother quite a bit and heard the kittens but this time is the first we've seen them.  Normally we'd just leave them but the mother is dead close to them.  What to do!!!

The local farmer said leave them and they'll just die - so what!!.  I've called the vet - not much use.  So I'm in a dilemma.

We'll bury the dead cat but what to do with the kittens.  I think they are about 4 weeks old because their eyes are open and they are quite big.

As an animal lover I just can't leave them - if I start to feed them, they'll attach themselves to us which isn't fair because we're not here all the time & there is no way I could take them all back to the UK.  OH doesn't like cats.

So - any one know of a cat rescue place near to La Charte in 36?

  5. Thanks for all replies - I have 'googled' found a rather nice one but on checking, they don't take dogs, so why advertise as 'Pet Friendly'.

However, still got a few weeks, so hopefully time to do more research.

  6. On Brittany Ferries & LD lines the dog stays in the car. I believe BF do have a few 'pet friendly' cabins on one of their ships.

BF insist on a muzzle at Caen - can't say for other ports as only ever used this one.  LD lines at Le Harve ignored it.  From the UK to France not required, at least from our experience they don't even check the chip.

  7. You will only need the worm treatment.  The Le Harve crossing in ok - we usually use Brittany Ferries but the last time OH used LD lines. The crossing to the UK is late afternoon and takes around 6 hrs, but the return is overnight taking 8hrs. With LD lines you can, if you make arrangements first, visit you pet during the sailing.  Our dog travels really well on the overnight crossing - a time when she's usually asleep. We do drape a travel rug over the back window of the car to cut out the bright lights on deck.
  8. We're planning to drive down to Murcia from 36 in early July to stay with OH's brother.  Does anyone have any knowledge of any Dog friendly hotels/B&Bs on that route.  Thought 1st night around Beziers area and second around Tarragona - breaking the trip into 3 x 300 mile days.

    Any suggestions greatfully accepted!!Sad [:(]

  9. We're thinking about driving to Spain (murcia) from South Indre, approx.850 x 2, to visit OH's brother.  Has anyone done this & if so does anyone know of any good Dog Friendly B&B's/Hotels on route??   We plan to take three days to get there.
  10. We have a female Labrador who is a little love - however she is terrified of small dogs. A jack russell attacked her a few years ago, fortunately no damage was done apart from her mental state.

Re: Muzzles - we have to use a muzzle when returning to the UK with Brittany Ferries. Evidently this was enforced after a jack russell ( again) nipped a few people in the ferry terminal.  Maybe they ( the dogs) should be listed as a 'Dangerous Dog'.Whistles [Www]

  11. Mr S & I prefer adjacent aisle seats - only problem is if the person sitting in the next seat has a weak bladder!!  Went to Thailand in February - Mr S really pushed the boat out when booking flights - we went Premium economy - bigger seats, more leg room - MORE MONEY but heyho whatever, after two trips to the US with American Airlines cattle truck style he said we had earned it.

According to today's Daily Mail seat 6A is supposedly the preferred seat - that is if you can afford to fly First Class.

  12. My daughter has been using the Shuttle to bring her dog to visit my house for the last 5 years - sometimes 3 times a year and has no problems. She prefers this way as she doesn't like the idea of leaving the dog in the car on he's own.
  13. Our dog - Amber - does stretching and 'talks' to remind us it's dinner time ( usually 6pm)  and brings her collar when she wants to go out.  She also moans and paces about around 11pm. telling us it's time for bed. Sometimes wonder who's the 'boss' in our house.

  14. As previous, depends on how many times a year you'll travel and on which routes.  We use Portsmouth/Caen, always night crossings. We're travelling next week for a stay of 10 days and I've just booked 2 single crossings - out in May and back in September.   So far the savings are around £155.00 less £60 fee, over all £95.00 plus the free breakfasts.

As with everything - it's what suits best.

  15. My mum died last year and like Idun's father, she had a 'pre-paid' funeral. She'd stipulated, no black or hats and no fancy, expensive flowers. We did the no black and hats but couldn't stop friends and family buying flowers. One thing, as a family, we did was to have a willow coffin which looked really lovely - she'd have said ' what a waste'. We sent her on her way with a simple service at the crematorium followed by a party and a knee's up.
  16. My sister baked a Delia cake from a kit this year and said it was ok.  I made mine from the Delia recipe I've been using for years. Although I made it later than usual it was still nice and moist. I take it out of the oven after about 3.5 to 3.45hrs. Also I use a slightly lower oven temperature as I have a fan oven.  Only criticism from family was that it wasn't as 'boozy'.
  17. I read this a few years ago - found it a bit hard going at the time.  Gave my book to a charity shop.  Since we moved in April and when not it France, I help out in the Bristish Red Cross shop. Over the past few weeks we've had three copies donated.  Maybe I'll buy one and read it again..
