  1. Appreciated Anton.

It's not normally a problem, I just forget to set the frost thermostat. Never had a burst before, so not sure how likely it is. All the pipes are internal, copper around the boiler feeding into ancient iron/steel, but all internal.

If the serious cold holds off till Wednesday, I'm alright

  2. A couple of options

Dell will sell you a laptop with the keyboard configuration of your choice

    or

if you are travelling to and from the UK at anytime, Dixons at the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkestone or at any BAA airport sell at what they call duty free prices. In fact, due to the volumes the sell, they choose to absorb the VAT content and do offer good value.

  3. Stick with the Eurostar option. If you do decide on Eurotunnel, aim for an earlier train. I get the 6:30 ish once a month and even then I get stuck in the M20/M26/M25 nightmare. You'll also have to deal with the major roadworks further round if you're going to West London and they run until the end of 2005. Let the train take the strain
  4. They're the guys at www.metcheck.com

It's cheap publicity really. They're a commercial forecasting organisation and offering doom scenarios gets them column inches. One of their guys forecast a wetter than average summer and thats supposed to give them credibility (I think not!). They'll only put their money on a 10 day forecast

A long range forecast can be one of three things. It's going to be better than average, it's going to be average or it's going to be worse than average. They've offered 22/11 to 27/11 as particularly cold.

My forecast is that the days are going to be getting shorter for the next 10 weeks, but don't panic because they will start getting longer again

  5. They'll probably go elsewhere for the winter to hibernate. That'll be the time to find out where they're getting into your house, block it off  and then next year they'll find somewhere else to go.

Though personally, I love to sit at dusk and watch them head out for their night on the town.

  6. Simple really. English is spoken almost universally in India. That's why English speaking economies are offloading work to India.

French and German companies would do the same if they could find a similar pool of well educated staff (then again, proably not. There's a little bit more employee protection in most of Europe)

  7. Damn good thing too !!

I'm tired of UK agencies that don't renew our lease and then find the most spurious excuses to stop money from the deposit. They then proceed to stich up the next tenant in exactly the same way.

And why the negative conclusions that the tenants aren't going to end their lease peacably ?

  8. Alan,

No direct information on the new fares, the booking staff are probably being kept in the dark as well, but the feeling is that they have got to remain competitive with the other channel crossing companies.

We'll have to await P&Os announcement this morning to see how that influences things. Although P&O appear to be planning cuts in service, I read at the weekend that Norfolk Line are putting more ships on the channel, as they find it a profitable route ???

Back to Eurotunnel, points aren't normally credited to the account until the journey has been taken, but they're going to credit all bookings to the account prior to the deadline.

The person I spoke to seemed positive. Whatever happens, they're not going to fill the tunnel in.

  9. Let's not jump to conclusions. I had to change one of my bookings last week and in conversation heard that one of the rumours at Eurotunnel is that they're going to introduce the modern 'passenger loading' type software that the budget airlines and Speedferries are using. So, with a bit of judicious planning, Eurotunnel could become the cheapest option.

  10. I'm with you on this one TU. I mostly use Etap, where you can cancel up to 19h. I often check in very late and with automatic check-in I don't disturb anyone when I turn up at midnight. I also like the B&B chain when there are four of us. The 4 bed rooms use the roof space very effectively and you get a double and 2 proper single beds for €50
  11. Yep, that's basically it. The bank cards are  debit cards not credit cards and may also carry a Visa or Mastercard logo, which provides entry to the respective worldwide network. So I've been able to use it internationally on the web.

However, the transaction should be signed for, not completed using your pin number. You should, in theory, be able to withdraw money via ATMs, though I've had varying luck with that. My CA card works OK in Ireland but has always failed me in Holland (I've never tried it in the UK, only in € countries). My La Poste carte bleu has worked 100% in both countries.

  12. I've bought furniture from 4 different brocantes in Limoges and the value is pretty good. I'd second teamed up on never seeing decent settees and we've ended up with a selection of comfy armchairs. I'm too tall to stretch out on a settee but t'other half does want us to bring one over from UK.

As for other furniture, we've bought bed frames, wardrobes and dining room furniture, most of which we've been pleased with.

  13. Jem,

We had a Clearview stove in the UK, but did not use the facility I'm describing. Therefore it was a flat top stove. The stove was also available with a cowling, which sat over the flat top and provided outlets for feeding hot air into ducting.

In the end we left the stove in the UK when we sold our house, because it would have been totally inappropriate in our french house.

The stove was awesome, outputting more than 12kw of heat. We'd have to throw open every door in the house to allow the heat to disapate.
