  1. There's Castellum in chatty ponsac -  nothing exciting, but always

open, there's also a restaurant done by the old station, which I tried

a couple of months ago, and was good, but the same menu last month

suggested the chef didn't know the basics.

the restaurant in Rancon is amazing. It was dull formula, but the

current chef is brilliant. €25 four course menu - just the starter -

asperge trioligie - green spears on a bed of prawn, white apsparagus

mouse and - wait for it- asparagus sorbet. and it works !!

    That'll do for starters.

  2. I was also asked for the card used to make the booking when I turned up at a manned booth. Pointed out that I'd paid by cheque - quick shrug and away we went. Having said that, I was the registered user so it didn't matter. I don't know if they've closed that loophole - they could just as easily check your passport.
  3. If you're transporting the cats by air, which is by far the quickest (and in my experience the least stressful, having also driven this cat some distance), the only bit that's different between the professional and me is the drive at either end. The airline handles everything in between - and they're professionals too - and charges £30 per cat (might be a bit more for a multi stage flight). So with three cats at £30 a pop, you're paying a 1000 % premium.

  4. Maybe not so great a distance, but I've flown with our cat on the Heathrow/Aberdeen route twice this year, with both BMI and BA. The airlines do it all the time and are very good. In the UK you can buy IATA/RSPCA approved boxes in most pet shops. The box has to be big enough for the animal to stand up in and to turn around in. I stopped feeding the cat the night before and she voided herself each time on the car trip to the airport.

The secret has been not to give her too much attention in transit, other than in the busy airport terminal. She stayed under cover in the back of the car and slept most of the way (3 1/2 hours). The aircraft holds are pressurised, heated and kept dark, so by all accounts all the pets do is sleep.

Do not sedate the animal. It won't be allowed to fly.

  5. Dave,

The 10 trip voucher doesn't contain this restriction, it includes the comment

    • £10 amendment fee if you later change a fixed reservation but NO change in the ticket price, even if you change to the most expensive peak summer sailings.

Managed to grab one last night. I'm a tunnel user throughout the winter, but these are valid for 24 months, i'm sure I'll use them

  6. Opel,

Not sure where the leak is, I'll have to dig out the paperwork and see the precise term used.

Does such a best as a multi fuel boiler exist, one that came be wood powered but switch to oil if needed. If I'm going to have to replace the boiler I should start thinking ahead. I've got a 5000 litre (yes 5k) buried fuel tank, but at prices projected for the next couple of years, alternatives need to be considered

  7. Opel,

I had my boiler serviced for the first time this autumn and couldn't believe the box of cack that came out of it. Hadn't bothered till now because it's only in use 4 or 5 months a year, summer included.

The guy who serviced it left a note to say that there was a slight leak in the boiler. Unfortunately I won't be seeing him for a few weeks and the boiler is up and running, so until then maybe you could help.

What, if any, are the implications of continuing to run the boiler ? Is it risky ?

    Regards

    Kevin

  8. Thanks folks,

I need to make a judgement call as to when to pop over this week. As always, there's so much to juggle. I've normally got the heating on thermostat by now, but just haven't got round to it. I'm never quiet sure how cold and for how long it needs to get before internal pipes suffer. All the external stuff is drained.

Forecast minus 3 tonight but it's too late for me to do anything now.

  9. Maybe it's the age of the card or the bank. Mine's a CA card due to expire next Feb. It's never worked chip 'n pin in the UK. I've not tried my La Poste card in the UK. Must try it next time I'm over.
  10. No, you have to sign using a french card in the UK. But, the units are more sophisticated now. I used mine in an Indian restaurant in Weybridge last week and the receipt showed the conversion rate that would be used. It also allowed me to record the tip and/or final figure in Euros. I filled in €55 and that's the amount that hit my account.

  11. A popular misconception. The salt doesn't soften the water. There is a resin inside the container through which the water passes and is softened. The salt is used to flush the resin periodically, depending upon the degree of hardness in your area. The salt residue can find its way into the water supply. The resin is eventually depleted and if its very old and has been neglected, it's time to replace the whole sheebang
  12. Limoges.

There's a square near the cathedral with a creperie an Indian restaurant and if I remember correctly, a faux irish bar. Ate in the restaurant a couple of years ago and it was fine.

As usual, I could walk you to it if I was there, but can't remember the address

And there's an oriental supermarket behind Cora on the ZI Nord, where you can buy most of the gubbins to make your own.
