  1. Don't know about French companies, but the number one supermarket chain in the UK pulled exactly that type of heavy handed HR interview with my son, to cover the failings of a manger who was eventually caught out and transferred.

Tis the way of the corporate world, I'm afraid
  2. >>So be warned if, like me,
    >your vehicle is elderly -

Says it all really. Why weren't you wearing your seatbelt?

There was a piece on Meridian television last night about a family of four who walked away unscathed from a smash last weekend. You should have seen the state of their BMW. And the firemen said that if it hadn't been for their belts, they'd have left the scene in coffins.

    ALWAYS wear your seatbelt.
  3. The useful links and posts forum could do with being exactly that. It seems to have degenerated into a general discussion forum. How about locking it and insisting on titles that have some significance to the content ?
  4. If you're looking to buy a used LHD car for use in France, which you intend to keep in france, why not buy one from a dealer in France and let them deal with the registration process. All the benefits listed elsewhere will then apply.
  5. If you're still ibased in the UK, pop into WH Smiths and scour the top shelf (or the car mag shelf). There's a magazine dedicated to buying import and will give you details of the 'how to' and dealers in Europe that will oblidge. I used it a while back to buy a LHD Zafira from Holland and saved lots. If you follow this route, speak to me via my mail box for the intricacies involved.

    Yep,

The boxes are at your local La Poste office. Ask there. And of course, you can forward your mail 'post restante' to the post office, though I don't think it's appreciated as a long term solution for low volumes
  7. They don't.

Having found the most expensive price, about which they can have a moan, they go on to find a crossing and a price that meets their needs.

For every posting about an extortionate price, there will be one about the bargain someone has found.

I play this game as well on Expedia. London to Paris for 70, but it will also come up with a price of 1000 plus, routing with 3 airlines via the capitals of Europe.

    Jill,

Generally head to the largest Hypermarket in the town. There's generally a tyre department, reasonable prices and quick service.
Invariably, you won't have internet access when you have a tyre problem
  9. Well, 24 hours ago, we opened a joint account (first time we've needed one, after 25 years together) and all we needed was a utility bill (EDF preferred, but France Telecom will do) and our passports. They need to keep copies of the passports and our
branch didn't have a copier, so 10 cents a copy at the local Ecomarche solved that. Probably worth taking copies with you.

I've had my own account with La Poste for a while and all the bits, pass numbers, cheque book and carte bleu etc. arrived recorded delivery within a couple of weeks.

    Very painless

And what are the economics, long term, of having one leg in the UK and a spare leg in France.

  11. So where on earth are they keeping the proceeds of the sale? In a large brown paper bag ?

I'll suggest Britline line (yet again !!), if they really feel they need a French bank account at this time. Funds for a future purchase can be transferred from their current fund holding mechanism (though if it's the large brown paper bag, they may struggle to explain it)
  12. Regarding a bank account, yes no problem at all. Use Britline and you don't even have to visit France. Apply for an application pack via their website, it will be with you in a couple of days.
Although, some people don't like or have had bad experiences in daya to day dealings with Britline, as a quick, easy way of opening an account, it's ideal.
