  1. Excuse me if this has already been asked but I have been looking back in the Pets Topic and can't find the question within the last 6 months.

We have a 3 yearold black labradore bitch that suffers regularly from phantom pregnancies.  We have been told that having her speyed will resolve this.

My question is should we have this done in the UK before we move or in France.  Does anyone have comparisons of prices?

  2. I have an interest in this as I have been offered the plot of land 4,300 sq mtrs) next to our property.  It is between the Urbanisation boundary and the agricultural boundary, I believe it could be deemed Recreational as the colour scheme at the Marie is a belt including the Commune Park.  We ahve been told we cannot build on it as we are in a National Park, but that is not our aim.

However it contains 69 poplar trees that were planted under an EU grant some years back.  Does anyone have an idea of what my responsibilities for these trees, as I would like to plant different types of trees to atract the red squirrels in.  Can I cut them down or are they owned by some unknown body.

  3. Have just returned from 4 days at the Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth.  Interesting in our marquee was P&O Ferries.  Bit of a nerve being in the town that they are all but withdrawing from.  Complaining was like water of a ducks back but I did try on a daily basis.  All they could talk about (in Portsmouth) was using Dover Calais or going to Spain.  They were distributing 2005 brochures and when asked when we could expect the 2006 the response was probably April if the past was anything to go by.  at least I had fun baiting them and it was senior managers not staff I was picking on.

Watching the Le Havre Ferries coming in a friend from the Chamber of Shipping was surprised at how few passengers were on deck considering the number of tall ships and warships they were passing.  They must have been empty.  Didn’t seem to be that many on the Normadie Express either.

Didn’t see Brittany Ferries but Portsmouth had a stand, only had Brittany Ferry brochures.  They were not happy with loosing P&O but did say that there was a new service being discussed but had no details.  Who knows, by 2010 we might have competition on the Western

  4. I know that this has appeared several times and I have used the web site for calculations But....

I am looking at buying a plot of 3,855 square metres of land adjoining mine.  it is unsuitable for agriculture (They have planted 60 poplars under EU grants) and it is not possible to build on it.  Agreed cost 3,000Euros.  I have just received an e-mail from the Notaire giving fees of 1,370.  I had been on the recommended web site and was expecting about 700.  is this usual to spend 45% of the sale price on fees to the Notaire.

  5. We have been advised the following within the Force:

"You may have received emails with subject heading and content in German.
The message may also contain hyperlinks (Internet addresses) to a number of sites that may also be in German.

ON NO ACCOUNT should you attempt to access these sites. There is a
possibility that the sites contain malicious code (viruses) that could
    infect your workstation
This matter has been reported to the appropriate authority for

  6. My wife has a Blue Badge and has no problems with its use in France.  Although as in the UK she never tries to abuse it by parking outside specified bays.

Be aware that the French certainly enforce the rules more than the UK so make sure it is clearly displayed.  On my last visit the National Police were issuing tickets for vehicles parked illegally in the bays at Auchan in Boulogne.  They were satisfied that my wife's badge was valid as I am sure they would have jumped at the opportunity to book an English car illegally parked.

  7. I have been following this topic with interest and read the various expert views.  Its alright for you youngsters but I will throw the other items into the arena:

I have one of those old green paper licenses so i will obviously need to change anyway.

what happens when you reach 70?  you need to renew your British license, but have no UK address or Doctor

French driving license states that on reaching 70 it is not valid for the UK.  How do you get that changed on approaching that milestone?

  8. After much success using Moneybookers leading up to Christmas i am now getting the opposite.  I have been trying to withdraw money since last Thursday and am being requested to prove my French Bank details (That I have always used in the past year) yet am unable to do that following their rules.  They do not respond to e-mails and today I can't get onto their web site (Time Out) I am not sure if it is them or my system. Has anybody had any joy with them in the last week and is this just a hiccup.

  9. The problem appears to be a broken wire on one of the car ramps.  could take some time to repair.  Hope its not too long, as although we are travelling by Speedferries on Friday week I am sure the Calais ferries will block the berths in Dover rather than float around off Calais.
  10. Those are the displayed levels, but if you hover over it you seem to have a repeat grading level so I am a Forum Member but place the hand over and I am a Forum Guru.  Strange as I often wonder whats going on with some of the topics.  Would have thought e-mails were a better way of castigating as public hangings were banned some time ago.
  11. We are refitting our kitchen and have a large oil fired boiler taking up the space of a cupboard.  In the UK we have replaced a floor standing Gas boiler for a wallmounted gas, this works as we have a hot water tank.

I have seen a few Oil wallmounted boilers on the internet but as we don't have a hot water tank in France I am not sure it would work.  Are they available and has anyone found them economic and successful.

  12. Pre EU days I travelled from London to Frankfurt using a Company ID Crd as I had left my passport at home.  All I had to do is sign a BA form stating that I would accept responsibility and pay the fare if I was refused entry at Frankfurt.

Ryanair will not even let you fly in the UK without a passport.  They would not accept a Police Warrant card from a friend when travelling Stanstead to Glasgow.  so the driving force is the carrier.  On the Ferries and Channel tunnel they seem to be the only ones asking to see them.

  13. Interesting, I bow to the more experianced.

I have always been told that the injection was only valid for 12 months by my UK Vet.  The same is stated by my French Vet.  However I only ever travel to France and UK with my dog (Haven't been to the States since 1964) hence they both insist on telling me 1 year.  The old paperwork states 1 year, haven't had the need to check the new Pets Passport.

  14. The old chestnut appears again and has been discussed many times on this and other Forums.

The Rabies injection in the UK DOES NOT last two years.  The manufacturers say it does but the English Government like the French insist on it being renewed every 12 months.  Miss it by one day and you restart.  Lets stop talking about two years.  it is the Government, for better or worse, that makes the decisions not the manufacturer.

  15. Saw the whole program and it was very interesting, even my wife was impressed.  Would love to use the service as it would reduce the travel time, especially as it would reduce the French travelling time.  He is talking about a second boat, would be excellent if he posted it at Portsmouth.

Only problem is do they take pets.  there is no mention on their web site so I presume they do not have a license.

  16. Ferry or cruise to Rouen? Wonderful trip, i went up there for L'amarda de Liberte on the Jeremiah O'Brian in 1994.  with the twist and turns takes ages, but under two bridges and past many attractive villages what a way for tourists to start their holiday.  better than the autoroute out of Calais
  17. I am looking to buy the Stihl multifunction system for a similar purpose.  It is light and has various attachments.  Have yet to see one, they have been advertised by the "Emeraude Vert(?)" in Domfront but they did not have one in stock.  prices are reasonable in the £00 Euros range.
