  1. Thanks. [:)]  I've always bought mine at the post office.  But the tabac is nearer if I'm not going into town.
  2. Am I right in believing that tabacs sell postal stamps?  (including the blue ones needed for letters to the UK). Or did I dream that ???
  3.   Thanks everyone for your replies ... I got one and it was good news!! [:D]     (PS ... I'm not sure what anyone would do with 15 pregnancy tests! )
  4.   Can anybody tell me what this is called in French please? And can I get one from a chemist? Thanks
  5. Thank you so much [:)] I tried that and it wouldn't work, so I phoned up the Eng helpline and they sorted me out - I did it all on the internet .... Mind you, I haven't tested it worked yet! Thanks again.
  6. I have a phone with an answering machine on, which used to cut in before the orange service cut in (dial 3101 to retrieve them). Something has happened though and the orange answer service cuts in before my phone answering machine. I haven't done anything (knowingly!!)... maybe I pressed a wrong button somewhere[8-)]   Can I choose how many times the phone rings before the Orange service picks up? I've dialed 3101 to see if I can make head or tail of it.... but I'm rubbish at "press button 4"...... "now press button 2 followed by button 1" at the best of times - I don't have much of a chance when it's in French! Can anybody help? I'm an idiot I know!!
  7. Thanks for the comements  Sue and Dog - think I might just stick a sneaky door in  [:)]
  8. yes that's what I understood - that big white good could represent a fire risk. I do have smoke alarms... but there is a mighty thick stone wall between my bedroom and the kitchen!
  9. That's a good point ... I suppose it's not an out-building as it is next to the house.  It's a one storey building that was built against the house.  Like a lean-to I suppose.
  10. I have an outbuilding next to my house which is used as a storage area.  I am thinking of knocking through and putting a door in so that it  is accessible directly from the house.  Does anybody know at what point is an outbuilding considered part of a home and therefore subject to tax d'habitation? Cheers
  11. Am I right in thinking that it's inadvisable to put white goods onto a timer switch? Cheap leccy starts after I've gone to bed and stops before I get up! But I have in the back of my mind that large electrical items shouldn't really have a timer on them?
  12. I got a "holiday Euro card" from The Money Shop.... is this classed as an Electron card?  It's a pre-paid jobby.
  13. I'm uncomfortable about doing it - can any clever computer person in the know tell me if this can actually be dangerous.  Or am I just being jumpy? Thanks
  14. can anybody help me? Had a skype phone installed on my PC a week ago - working great. BUT I now can't get "listen again" radio playing through PC.  Just been fiddling with the connections - all OK , power obviously going to speakers as they are 'crackling'.  Dialled a number on skype phone .... and found Radio 4 to be playing through the phone!  Has this happened to anybody else?  How can I fix it????

    cornflour

I don't mean the yellow flour from the corn (maize) plant. I mean the other cornflour... .the white starchy stuff that is used as a thickening agent. Thanks

    cornflour

is cornflour commonly available in France?  If so, what's it called? Thanks
  17. It was given to the B&B owner over the phone - to pay a £25 deposit for my stay... the rest way paid in cash. It's not even my card (as he is aware) - it's my husband's mother's card!  She would not be best pleased to know it had been retained!!!
  18. not sure where to put this on the forum ... let's try it here.. I have made enquiries at a UK b&b where I have stayed a couple of times recently.  I was told that they'd want a deposit and could put it on the same credit card as last time ..... I was a little surprised to hear that they still had it! Is this common practice, or is the credit card logged on his own records and quite normal. (Having seen his office - a PC on a landing, accesible by anybody with half a mind to snoop - I'm a little off-put by the idea that he has retained my card details.) Or am I being fussy?
  19. I got some last week from a pharacist and she said to throw it away after it's been open a month (by which time I will have used about 1:20 of it!). It doesn't say anything on the carton or patient information about throwing it away - is there anybody out there who knows why it needs to be chucked?  I'm more than tempted to keep it in the fridge.  It's not free after all!
  20. just got back from vets.  Doesn't look like anything serious - she's had an anti-biotic injection as a treatment for cystitis so hopefully that will do the trick. Funny how the most fierce of cats turn completely docile in the vets and make a liar out of you when you tell the vet to be careful cos she bites! I've just opened a nice tin of food for her as a reward for letting me spend (another) 80 Euro on her!!  [:D] Thanks for all your kind and helpful words.  It's horrible when an animal is suffering.
  21. I've seen a tinge of pink in one of my cat's urine.  Any ideas what this could be a sign of?  Anything I can do to help?  If it perists, then I'll take her to the vets, but just wondered if anybody has come across this.  I'm sure lots of things could cause it.  I know worms can give a show of blood in the faeces, but is the same true for urine.  I've just realised that they are long overdue a worm tablet.
  22. We live in France, but my husband has been working in the UK for some months.  He pays tax on a PAYE basis in the UK. Can anybody give me any advice as to how he declares it here in France - on a tax return obviously, but what is the score as to any further tax?  Will he be taxed any extra (ie, if the amount of tax he's paid in the UK doesn't equal what he would have paid if he worked and was paid in France). If anybody has had any experience of this situation, I'd be grateful for any comments from them. Many thanks
